Headteacher's Message

After a glorious half term week it was wonderful to see all our pupils back and looking refreshed after the break.

The exams are back on for Year 11 and 13 but also mock exams for our Year 12 Art students. Year 10 have topped and tailed this week with trips,

accommodating over 60 pupils, to see the phenomenal National Theatre’s production of War Horse. The play is based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved novel about the trials faced by a boy and his horse, featuring life-sized horse puppets, set against the backdrop of World War I. Students have been speaking about the trip excitedly and I am sure they will remember this production for many years to come.

Our Year 10 Geography students got out and about (and a little bit soggy!) in Teddington and Busy Park on Tuesday for the first of their fieldwork days, busy data collecting and learning about the features of the park as well as urban success along Teddington High Street.

On Wednesday the Year 12 Economics students heading into central London for a tour to the Bank of England and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). They began the day with a trip to the offices of the EBRD in Canary Wharf where they had a guided tour followed by a talk about the work of the EBRD. In the afternoon they went to the Bank of England where students were able to look around the museum before attending a talk from one of the bank employees and watching some educational films on the role of the bank. All students found the trip extremely interesting and helped them with their post sixth form choices.

Our first cohort of Bronze Duke of Edinburgh challengers are out on their training expedition this week, yesterday and today near Guildford. They will be carrying all their own equipment for the weekend in their teams and practicing their navigation skills in the Surrey Hills ahead of the final assessments in the coming weeks. Good luck to them all – we are crossing our fingers for dry weather for the next few weeks, as this week’s group has been rather unlucky!

Finally today we had another thought provoking Working Lunch seminar, this time with Bence Cisba from the Deep Learning Team at Astrazeneca. He told us about his career in tech, specifically how he moved from studying physics at Bath University to following his interest in working on AI.

I wish you all a restful weekend and look forward to another busy week at Waldegrave!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

Year 7 have now reached the final half term of their first year at Waldegrave. This week they have been reminded about important road safety information as part of Child Safety week and looking at topical news items in tutor time. They continue to take part in Friendship workshops to support them with their peer relationships and to remind them of our key message about being kind to each other.

The top three on the epraise student leaderboard has seen a slight change in placings. This week we have in 3rd place Ruzgar C 7SRI, in 2nd place Orla S 7SRI & 1st place is Annabelle H, 7PRE. Well done to Isabel McC who has now achieved 200 epraise points! There are a number of other students who are fast approaching 200 epraise points, we will celebrate these students soon.

Students need to log onto their epraise account as the shop is now open to purchase gifts. A reminder that the purchasing for epraise gifts closes on Tuesday 9th June.

Unfortunately the weather has had an impact on sporting fixtures this week but on Friday the U13 Cricket team will be facing Turing House School. We will let you know the result in next week’s bulletin.

On Wednesday next week Secondary Borough Sports takes place at St Mary’s University. We wish the year 7 team good luck and look forward to reporting back on their successes.

Our pupils are also very much looking forward to showing you around the school ahead of the Year 8 information mornings taking place on 19 and 26 June. Please see the letter that has been sent out this week for more information.

Please may we remind you about the school’s uniform policy regarding jewellery. The only jewellery permitted to be visible is a single pair of stud earrings and a watch. A necklace may be worn but should not be visible.

Piercings: Nose or eyebrow piercings are not permitted and will need to be removed, however recent they are. Students are also not permitted to wear multiple earrings. Covering extra piercings with a plaster is not a permissible alternative.

As part of our commitment to fostering a positive and respectful learning environment, we emphasize the importance of students adhering to the uniform guidelines. Many thanks in advance with your support on this.

Have a lovely week!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

It was great to see all the students back in school this week well rested and ready to learn.

We didn’t have assembly this week due to the exam schedule but next week we look forward to celebrating Pride Month in assembly and we have the candidates for Head Girl presenting their visions for their time as Head Girl and asking for the students’ vote.

Well done to the top epraise scorers this week Jasmine FLY, Raffi P FGC and Darina Y is SDE. The top tutor group is PCO but there is still time to change that before the final celebration assembly of the year later in the term.

A reminder to check your child’s uniform as we are having a few students come to school with left over nail varnish and jewellery etc from the holidays.

Year 9

It has been a pleasure to welcome all of Year 9 back to school following the half-term break. We hope that everyone enjoyed a restful week and has returned feeling refreshed and ready for another busy term.

Students have made an excellent start back and have been working hard in lessons. This week, I had the opportunity to visit a Year 9 Technology lesson where students were designing and creating bespoke jewellery, demonstrating great creativity and craftsmanship. In Food Technology, students were busy making burritos, which looked absolutely delicious!

A special congratulations to Ameera FH, who recently represented Richmond at the London Youth Games in Volleyball. Her team won the gold medal and remained undefeated throughout the competition, a fantastic achievement and one that we are incredibly proud of. Very well done, Ameera!

We would also like to congratulate all students who continue to demonstrate our school values of Enjoy, Achieve and Empower through their positive contributions to school life. Students are continuing to accumulate well-earned epraise points, and this week’s leading students are Charlotte W (9STR) with 38 points and Yentil N (9STR) with 29 points. Excellent work to both students!

This term, we are placing a particular focus on maintaining high standards of uniform and equipment. Form tutors will be carrying out daily checks, and I will also be visiting tutor groups regularly. We would appreciate your support in ensuring that your child arrives at school fully equipped each day, including their lanyard.

Well done to the first group of our Duke of Edinburgh students who have been trekking through the Surrey Hills today. It was a bit wet yesterday but they had a dry night and mostly dry conditions today – the first teams were back two hours early so it was a real success for them all!

Thank you for your continued support. Here’s to another successful and enjoyable week at Waldegrave for our wonderful Year 9 students!

Year 10

Welcome back to the final half of the summer term. I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable half-term break. We are now entering the final, crucial stretch of Year 10 before the summer holidays, and we have a busy few weeks ahead filled with important preparation for Year 11.

It has been fantastic to see the students return this week with such a focused and positive attitude. Here are our latest highlights and some essential updates as we navigate this final school term together.

Following the letter sent home on Tuesday this week, you will be aware that we will be inviting parents to learn more about the Blackout App and choose whether they wish their child(ren) to download it as a digital wellbeing choice. Blackout is a mobile phone app that helps students manage and limit their phone use during the school day by blocking access to distracting apps during school hours, such as social media, games and web browsers, while keeping essential communication (calls and SMS) available.

You may be interested to read and discuss at home the feedback we have recently gathered from Year 7 and 8 students who have been using the app successfully in the last half term. Discussions with students were thoughtful and honest, with many students recognising the positive benefits of the app regarding screen-time habits.

We are holding an information webinar for parents and carers where you can learn more about Blackout on Wednesday 10 June at 5.30pm. Please register your interest here.

I would like to extend a huge congratulations to all the students who attended our recent trip to Boppard, Germany, just before the break. Their behaviour was exemplary throughout the journey. They fully immersed themselves in the local culture, practiced their language skills with confidence, and represented our school brilliantly. Thank you to the staff who made this fantastic enrichment opportunity possible, and well done to the students for making it such a success.

Our recent assembly programme has focused on broadening horizons and celebrating diversity:

Science and Pride Month: Mr Allen delivered a fantastic assembly celebrating Pride Month. He highlighted the incredible contributions of inspirational LGBTQ+ figures in the world of science. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on inclusivity and the power of diversity in innovation.

Post-16 Options: Mr Bannister led a vital assembly focusing on life after Year 11. We were delighted to welcome a guest speaker from Kingston College, who provided students with valuable insights into vocational courses, apprenticeships, and T-Levels. It is the perfect time for our students to start envisioning their next steps as they approach their final year.

As we start this new half term, we are entering a critical period with the upcoming Year 10 assessments fast approaching. These exams are vital for tracking progress and helping us target support for when pupils begin Year 11. To help your child(ren) perform their best over the coming weeks, please ensure they focus on these key areas at home:

Establish a Routine: Encourage a consistent study schedule this week with dedicated, quiet revision time away from distractions like mobile phones.

Use Active Revision Techniques: Remind them that just reading notes is rarely effective. They should use flashcards, mind maps, and practice exam questions.

Prioritise Wellbeing: Ensure they maintain a healthy balance by getting at least eight hours of sleep per night, eating nutritious meals, and taking regular breaks.

Stay Equipped: Please check that your child/ren comes to school every day with a full set of equipment, including black pens, pencils, a ruler, and a scientific calculator.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in guiding your child/ren through this important year. Let’s work together to make this final half term a brilliant success.

Have a lovely weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

This week is Child Safety Week and the theme is ‘Making Prevention Possible’. While much of the focus of the Child Accident Prevention Trust is on infants and very young children, 10 to 19 year olds are also at significant risk of accidents. Before half term, I highlighted the importance of water safety for young people and this week I am focusing on road safety.

Government research data has found that 2.5% of all children in England have been involved in a road traffic collision in the previous 12 months. The road safety website Think! leads campaigns around improving safety on and around the roads. This includes this very simple advice for young pedestrians around crossing the road.

‘EYES UP’ prompts children to put their phone away and look out for their friends and not distract them.

‘SLOW DOWN’ advises children to take care and don’t run across the road when traffic is coming even if they think there is time, as it can be difficult to judge the speed of traffic.

‘CROSS SAFELY’ reminds children to always find a safe place to cross, use a pedestrian crossing if there is one and choose a place where they can see clearly in all directions. When getting off the bus, they should wait for the bus to leave so they have a clear view and can be seen by other road users.

Guidance for safer cycling can also be found on the Think! website.

Sports Fixtures

This Tuesday we had both cricket and rounders matches due to take place on home pitches. Unfortunately the weather had other plans and these had to be cancelled.

Today our U13 Cricket team will be facing Turing House School. We will share their scores next week and wish them all luck!

After the disappointing cancellation of the Junior Borough Sports event on Wednesday this week we are looking forward to next Wednesday’s Secondary Borough Sports competition at St Mary’s University. We wish all our pupils taking part the best of luck and will share the results in next week’s bulletin.
