Headteacher's Message

After a glorious half term week it was wonderful to see all our pupils back and looking refreshed after the break.

The exams are back on for Year 11 and 13 but also mock exams for our Year 12 Art students. Year 10 have topped and tailed this week with trips, accommodating over 60 pupils, to see the phenomenal National Theatre’s production of War Horse. The play is based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved novel about the trials faced by a boy and his horse, featuring life-sized horse puppets, set against the backdrop of World War I. Students have been speaking about the trip excitedly and I am sure they will remember this production for many years to come.

Our Year 10 Geography students got out and about (and a little bit soggy!) in Teddington and Busy Park on Tuesday for the first of their fieldwork days, busy data collecting and learning about the features of the park as well as urban success along Teddington High Street.

On Wednesday the Year 12 Economics students heading into central London for a tour to the Bank of England and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). They began the day with a trip to the offices of the EBRD in Canary Wharf where they had a guided tour followed by a talk about the work of the EBRD. In the afternoon they went to the Bank of England where students were able to look around the museum before attending a talk from one of the bank employees and watching some educational films on the role of the bank. All students found the trip extremely interesting and helped them with their post sixth form choices.

Our first cohort of Bronze Duke of Edinburgh challengers are out on their training expedition this week, yesterday and today near Guildford. They will be carrying all their own equipment for the weekend in their teams and practicing their navigation skills in the Surrey Hills ahead of the final assessments in the coming weeks. Good luck to them all – we are crossing our fingers for dry weather for the next few weeks, as this week’s group has been rather unlucky!

Finally today we had another thought provoking Working Lunch seminar, this time with Bence Cisba from the Deep Learning Team at Astrazeneca. He told us about his career in tech, specifically how he moved from studying physics at Bath University to following his interest in working on AI.

I wish you all a restful weekend and look forward to another busy week at Waldegrave!

Year Group Messages

Year 12

I hope all our year 12 students had a lovely half term and feel refreshed ready to start this last half term! It was a very busy enrichment week before half term for our Year 12 students. During the first session Mr Bannister led a session on writing personal statements. The presentation has been added to the careers and progression classroom and tutors will be expecting the first draft of personal statements before the end of this half term, so they can give feedback.

We were very lucky to have so many volunteers from the finance, medical and media sectors come in to speak to our students and enlighten them on different career pathways and how they got into them. Students interested in Law attended a talk from Mrs Ruggles-Ross about the different sectors to Law and the different pathways into Law. All students found the talk extremely interesting and were very excited to attend a Law speed networking event following the talk. On Thursday we were very lucky to be joined by five guests who are all completing/have completed degree apprenticeships. Four of our guests were Waldegrave alumni, so it was very inspiring for our students to see the different post-16 options and what our own students have gone on to complete.

This week our Year 12 Art students have been completing their mock examinations. They have all been working so hard and should be very proud of the work they have produced.

On Wednesday 37 of our Year 12 Economics students went on a trip to the Bank of England and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Well done to Joshua CC, 12JMN, who has been selected as an official referee for the Basketball England Surrey league Finals at ACS Cobham in May. He has been referee at a few matches and we are very proud of his success.

Next week our photography students will be completing their mock exams from Tuesday-Thursday. They have all been preparing so well throughout the year and I look forward to seeing the work that they produce.

Throughout this half term Universities will be starting to have their open days. Students can miss school for these visits, however please make sure an email has been sent to sixthform@waldegravesch.org informing them of the absence, so our registers can be populated.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ms R Pugh, Head of Year 12

Health & Wellbeing

This week is Child Safety Week and the theme is ‘Making Prevention Possible’. While much of the focus of the Child Accident Prevention Trust is on infants and very young children, 10 to 19 year olds are also at significant risk of accidents. Before half term, I highlighted the importance of water safety for young people and this week I am focusing on road safety.

Government research data has found that 2.5% of all children in England have been involved in a road traffic collision in the previous 12 months. The road safety website Think! leads campaigns around improving safety on and around the roads. This includes this very simple advice for young pedestrians around crossing the road.

‘EYES UP’ prompts children to put their phone away and look out for their friends and not distract them.

‘SLOW DOWN’ advises children to take care and don’t run across the road when traffic is coming even if they think there is time, as it can be difficult to judge the speed of traffic.

‘CROSS SAFELY’ reminds children to always find a safe place to cross, use a pedestrian crossing if there is one and choose a place where they can see clearly in all directions. When getting off the bus, they should wait for the bus to leave so they have a clear view and can be seen by other road users.

Guidance for safer cycling can also be found on the Think! website.
