Headteacher's Message

This week we have revelled in the warm but extremely pleasant weather as Waldegrave has been as busy as ever with sporting fixtures and trips back on! The Summer term has flown by and looking back the school year has been full of high points and it seems only yesterday we were sending out our new Year 7s away on their trips to Thames Young Mariners.

We have some more exciting awards news to share this week as Emilia B, 8ESU has won the Young Coders Competition, a UK wide competition for children ages 8 to 13 years old. Last year one of our teams came third but this year Waldegrave has taken first place. To have beaten all other entries from across the country is an amazing achievement and we are thrilled for Emilia. You can play the short game she submitted here.

Well done also to all our students who have taken part in school outreach projects in Drama and French this week, Year 10 who have all been undertaking work experience, as well as the Waldegrave team who took part in the Middlesex Athletics event on Monday (see more on this in the Sports Fixtures section below). They were all excellent representatives of the school, demonstrating the Waldegrave values: Enjoy, Achieve, Empower.

Year 10 teaching staff have visited the students in their various work placements this week, making trips to coffee shops, Pre-school Nurseries and Primary Schools, book shops, news papers, cinemas, theatres, a veterinary practice and many others! Students all seem to be enjoying a week on-the-job as a real contrast to school lessons and we look forward to reading some of their write ups in the end of term magazine due to be published next Friday.

Our Year 12 Geography Students have been very busy this week studying different urban and rural areas from Brixton and Battersea to our local Bushy Park. Year 12 students have also had a taster lecture in Maths from the London School of Economics and Political Science with Professor Julia Böttcher. Thank you very much to Professor Böttcher, who is also a parent, and our Maths Department for organising this event.

The rest of the school did not miss out on the fun this week, with our amazing Drop Down Day of activities arranged for Years 7, 8, 9 and 12. Year 7s took part in a Smoothie Making Day, Year 8s undertook life skills training, while Year 9s were treated to a variety of London trips to select from while Year 12 held their own Sports Day. Spirits were still high for the remainder of the week following these adventures.

We are very much looking forward to more excitement next week not only will we be celebrating Waldegrave’s Book Week but we have our annual Sports Day on Tuesday and our team will be competing in the Junior NBA 3v3 Finals in Trafalgar Square on Thursday – we can’t wait to see them on the big stage!

There is a lot of excitement ahead of Sports Day on Tuesday next week. We are keeping an eye on the weather forecast, which at the time of writing suggests perfect conditions, however, if the extreme heat returns we are planning for alternative arrangements.

Our annual Book Week promises author talks and a book swap for students. We also have the highly anticipated Summer Festival next Thursday as presented by our fantastic Performing Arts Department. Tickets for the festival are available via Ticketsource using the following link: Summer Festival Tickets

Please note we are currently advertising for an Academic Officer role at our School. This full time, term time only role would begin in September, with interviews taking place shortly. To apply for this role please visit our careers site. This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate considering a career in teaching who wishes to gain valuable school experience, a qualified teacher returning to education after a career break, or a parent who is looking for a rewarding term time role.

On a final note, thank you to all our parents and carers, teachers and staff and particularly the students for making this another year where students can enjoy, achieve and feel empowered.

Have a wonderful Summer and we will look forward to seeing you all refreshed, rested and full of stories to share in September.

Year Group Messages

Year 7

What a busy week Year 7 has had this week! Pupils have been finalising their tutor group teams ahead of Sports Day, which I’m sure will be a hotly contested event for the title of Year 7 Sports Day champions.

They have finished writing their letters to the Year 6 students joining us here at Waldegrave next year. They have done a really great job, well done.

On Tuesday, Year 7 took part in a Show Racism the Red card workshop. They discussed key messages regarding forms of discrimination and about how we should treat each other with respect.

Our Year 7 rounders team were also on form on Tuesday, taking part in the RSSP tournament on Tuesday and came a very creditable 3rd place. Well done to the team!

On Wednesday the Drop Down day was spent completing a range of activities for their Smoothie project. They created an advertising jingle, decided on a recipe for making a smoothie as well as completing the costing for their ingredients. They also designed the packing and organised a pitch to the judges. They will do some follow up work in tutor times and the best group in each tutor group will take part in the final presentation against some esteemed judges next Friday!

The top three on the epraise student leaderboard has seen a slight change in placings. We have in 3rd place Annabelle H, 7PRE, in 2nd place Ruzgar C, 7SRI & in 1st place this week is Orla S, 7SRI. Congratulations also to Alice J, 7FBO who has passed the 250 epraise milestone – amazing!

The epraise tutor group leaderboard sees 7SRI move to the top spot, 7PRE are in 2nd and 7FBO in 3rd place this week. 7SSN are doing their best to close the gap. Well done to everyone who has earned epraise this week for hard work and demonstrating our school values: enjoy, achieve and empower.

Well done to Evie CE, 7PRE, who has just taken her Grade 4 piano exam and received a merit. Great news – keep it up!

Next week Year 7 are looking forward to the author visit from Zohra Nabi and Wednesday’s book week themed Dress Up day. I am looking forward to seeing the creative ideas that will be on display.

This is a gentle reminder that your child needs to have completed the Enrichment Option Choice Google Form by the morning of Monday 6 July. Students were told about the process in Tuesday’s assembly and the assembly slides and the Enrichment Option Google Form have been put onto your child’s form Google Classroom. Please encourage them to complete this over the weekend if they have not already done so.

Please note that although we will try our best, we cannot guarantee that your child will be allocated their first choice of enrichment subject.

Finally, if you are looking for free FUEL/HAF activities over the Summer Break please see the Summer Programme from Hampton Youth Zone here. (Note: The Whitton Youth Zone is closed this summer due to building works.)

Have a lovely summer break!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week we took advantage of the slightly cooler weather and their were plenty of events;

On Monday Shayleen C, Ava S and Hannah R took part in the Middlesex athletics tournament. Hannah achieved a fantastic 5th place in the Hurdles.

Theatre Tour Outreach: We have taken two wonderful Year 8 casts to local primary schools this week (Archdeacon, St James’ and Stanley) The students performed a play, ‘Smeds and Smoos’, and then ran a workshop with Y2 students. They were great ambassadors for the school.

Also on Monday, 14 students who had been year long members of the French club at Waldegrave got the opportunity to go to a French Picnic at St James’ School and worked with the Year 3 students to introduce them to the language and culture with some French games.

On Wednesday we had our Drop Down Day where Year 8s learnt valuable life schools in a variety of workshops with outside facilitators coming in to impart their wisdom. The workshops included First Aid, A self defence workshop, Water safety with the RNLI, Financial, Road safety with the practical investigation looking at how mobile phones reduce our reaction time. The girls were very well behaved and really enjoyed the day.

This weeks top ePraise scorers were Lottie M, Klea L both in FLY and Eva M in EHO. Next week is the final opportunity for students to claim ePraise points to add up to the final tutor group and individual totals and the points are tight at the top.

We are hoping to run Sports Day next Tuesday but we will be keeping a firm eye on the weather and will be putting various plans in place to aid the students should the weather change.

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

I want to say a huge well done to Year 9. I have had some wonderful feedback this week from staff and subject teachers regarding their wonderful work ethic and positive attitudes throughout the past few weeks especially in the very hot weather.

I am also immensely proud of Year 9 and they were an absolute credit to the school during their various visits to London this week. London is the UK’s bustling, multicultural heart and it was the perfect place to grow our students’ knowledge of the world and let them see and experience the things they read about in books. They can touch real history and see art with their own eyes. I was lucky enough to attend the London Dungeons Trip and it was wonderful to see the girls enjoying the various sights as we walked through London. The Dungeons was an immersive theatrical experience with fantastic actors who brought London’s dark history to life through engaging stories and special effects. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was great to join in the fun alongside them.

Our top three epraise forms this week continue to be – 9PIR, 9EDA and 9FDR well done to those form classes but they now very closely follow and the challenge is now on for those top three spots. Topping our individual leader board this week is Quince C, 9EBH with 10 points in total this week – well done – keep up the great work!

A reminder that students should wear sun cream and bring lots of water with you if you have PE this week or on any day in future that is very hot or sunny. Students are advised to bring a hat to shield their faces from the sun.

As we look ahead, we will continue to emphasise the importance of maintaining our positive trends in attendance and uniform standards. With two weeks remaining I hope that all students will make every effort to be in school each day and on time.

We want to end this half term positively and so we would ask for your support in checking in with your child about how they feel this term has gone and how they are feeling about starting their GCSE courses when in Year 10.

Year 10

As we approach the end of another academic year, I want to take a moment to say a massive well done to all of our Year 10 students. Their dedication, maturity, and hard work this year have been truly outstanding, and they should all be incredibly proud of their progress.

This week, Mrs Dhir and I had the pleasure of going out on several work experience visits. We were absolutely blown away by how well our students are representing the school! Employers have shared fantastic feedback about their work ethic, punctuality, and enthusiasm. It is brilliant to see them stepping up and gaining such valuable real-world skills.

A quick reminder that our Sports Day will take place next week on Tuesday. Please ensure that students have completed and submitted all of their team sheets as soon as possible so that we can finalise the events.

With the warm summer weather approaching, it is very important that students stay safe and comfortable weather forecast for this week in Twickenham. Please ensure your child comes to school with:

  • High-factor sun cream already applied
  • Plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day
  • A sun hat or cap for time spent outdoors

Health & Wellbeing

This Summer many families from our school community will be travelling abroad. Taking some simple steps and planning ahead can ensure you and your family stay safe and healthy. The UK Health Security Agency recommends getting travel health advice from a GP or travel clinic appointment at least 8 weeks before you go and allowing time for vaccines to take full effect before your travel (this is usually 4 weeks).

Their advice also includes ensuring everyone within the household (children and adults) are up to date with all their routine vaccinations, including MMR/MMRV (Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Chickenpox). You can read the full guidance from the UK Health Security Agency here.

On the subject of immunisations, The South London Children and Young People’s Community Immunisation Service (CYPCIS) are offering the following vaccinations at community catch-up clinics during the summer holidays – list of clinics here. Please ensure your child is up to date with these essential vaccinations.

  • HPV vaccine – protects against human papillomavirus, and is offered to boys and girls in Year 8 (ages 12-13)
  • 3-in-1 teenage booster – protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and polio, and is offered to students in Year 9 (ages 13-14). Also known as the school-leavers booster and the Td/IPV vaccine.
  • MenACWY vaccine – protects against four strains of bacterial meningitis, and is offered to students in Year 9 (ages 13-14)
  • MMR vaccine – protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, and is offered to all children and young people who do not have two doses of the vaccine.

Click here to find out how to book into these clinics.

Finally please see a couple of parent webinars that may be of interest:
University Pathways for Disabled and Neurodivergent Students: This free one-hour webinar is taking place on Tuesday 14 July 6-7.15pm. The session will help parents and carers to support your child(ren) with preparing for and succeeding in higher education. Limited places available.
Understanding the pressures boys are navigating today in Richmond and Wandsworth: Drawing on what students shared during Voicebox workshops this free 1-hour online webinar is for parents and carers of boys and young people of all genders in Richmond and Wandsworth.

Sports Fixtures

This week we sent a team of athletes to take part in the Middlesex Athletics Event at the Saracen’s Stone X Stadium on Monday. Our team of seven joined Team Richmond as part of the Schools Athletics Association of Middlesex Track & Field Championships and were joined by other students from across the borough, competing against 7 other boroughs.

Our students worked incredibly hard and showed real determination to play their part in Team Richmond. While we are still awaiting the official times and results, we were proud to see our students place well in their heats and events throughout the day.

Overall the Year 7 and 8 girls teams for Richmond placed in 5th out of eight boroughs taking part on the day. Well done to them and all the young people who took part.

The results sheets that were up on the day revealed the following results, however these might be subject to change:

  • Luna B, 7EVA – 4th in Y7 Hurdles
  • Loulou R, 7EHA – 2nd in Y7 Relay and 3rd in Y7 200m heat
  • Zinnia W, 7SRI – 5th in Y7 Javelin
  • Hannah Robinson, 8FLY – 5th in Y8 Hurdles
  • Ava S, 8PCO – 6th in Y8 Discus

Our Rounders teams were playing this week, with both Year 7 and Year 9 participating in matches as part of a tournament. The Year 7 team won their decider game for third place, playing Turing house, with a score of 7.5 to 2.5. Year 9 were playing in the final to see who would be the tournament winners. They won their match against Grey Court with a score of 8.5 to 6.

Finally our Sixth Form boys Basketball team were also playing on Wednesday this week. They won by a fantastic margin against Hampton Boys with final result of 70-48. Well done!

We are as always incredibly proud of all our sports teams, athletes and players and would like to thank everyone who has taken part or cheered on a team this year. Next week we have our fantastic annual Sports Day event on Tuesday and we will see our incredible basketball team take on the London finals of the Junior NBA 3v3 on Thursday. Watch our socials and next week’s School Magazine for these results!

Have a great summer!
