Headteacher's Message

The Summer Term always passes by so quickly and we are already almost at the end of this half of the term. This week has been full of wins for our Sports Teams and I encourage you to read more in our Sports Fixtures section further down but I have to share that our incredible Basketball Team smashed all their competition at the London Youth Games Junior NBA 3v3 Regional Finals and will be heading to the finals in Trafalgar Square in July! We are so proud and can’t wait to cheer them on the big stage.

We had a fascinating talk in school on Monday organised by Mr Drew, our Head of History. We welcomed the Holocaust Educational Trust to lead a workshop and give students the opportunity to ask their own questions of Holocaust survivors via pre-recorded interactive testimonies. Pupils also had the opportunity to use virtual reality technology, they were able to explore the recordings of historical sites associated with the Holocaust – all without leaving their classroom!

On Tuesday a small group of Year 8 pupils attended the Queen Elizabeth Prize Engineers Speed Mentoring Event at the Science Museum in South Kensington. Pupils met female engineers at the top of their profession who shared insights about the exciting career opportunities open to young women interested in this sector. It was a fantastic day and I am sure has inspired the attendees!

This week all of Year 8 have enjoyed visiting the Buddhapadia Thai Buddhist Temple in Wimbledon. This fascinating visit explored part of the Religious Studies curriculum, learning about the Buddhist faith and its core values. The temple is a spectacular place of worship surrounded by peaceful grounds and our pupils showed themselves to be sensible and mature with the questions they asked.

Our Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh hopefuls had their training days on Tuesday and Wednesday learning about camp cooking, pitching a tent and how to plan their route using OS maps! The groups really enjoyed their day off timetable learning something new.

Next week our Year 12s will be off timetable, with a variety of workshops and networking sessions for their enrichment and progression week. They will meet professionals from medical, veterinary, financial and media backgrounds, as well as learn about University applications and apprenticeship opportunities. A highlight of the week will be the session learning about the Extended Project Qualification. This optional qualification, equivalent to half an A level, is open to all students and is an independent project they can undertake on a topic of their choice. The week will end with an exciting trip to Thorpe Park, which I am sure they are all very much looking forward to!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms E Tongue

Year Group Messages

Year 7

This week year 7 learned about the theme behind the week’s mental health awareness week in an assembly led by Ms Tongue. Students were encouraged to be active, be kind and make connections with their peers. This fits nicely with our Walk to School week challenge Year 7 will be taking part in.

On Friday tutor groups took part in the weekly quiz and had to answer a number of general knowledge questions. Here’s one they posed, do you know the answer? What type of parasitic creature was named after Sir David Attenborough last week to celebrate his 100th birthday?

Congratulations to the Year 7/8 Rounders team who had a win against Twickenham School on Wednesday after school. Please see full details in the Sports Fixture section below.

The top three on the Epraise student leaderboard has seen a slight change in placings. This week we have in 3rd place Ruzgar C, 7SRI, in 2nd place Annabelle H, 7PRE, and in 1st place Orla S, 7SRI. Well done to all 3 students who have now achieved 200 Epraise points – great work!

The Epraise tutor group leaderboard sees 7PRE still at the top, 7SRI have moved up to 2nd with 7EHA in 3rd place this week.

Keep earning Epraise points so that you can choose something exciting from the shop before the end of term.

Year 7 have been planning how they are going to take part in the Walk to School week challenge next week from Monday 18 to Friday 22 May. This includes walking home from school as well! We will keep a record of how many students are able to do this. Then as an additional challenge, tutor groups will be trying to calculate the distance they’ve covered over the course of the week to find out which tutor group will be crowned the Walk to School Week Champions! We hope Year 7 will try their hardest to complete this challenge the best that they can. We understand some students won’t be able to walk as far or as often as others but it’s the taking part that counts.

Year 7 are invited to come to the athletics club after school on Monday as the PE department are starting to look at selection for the Borough Sports Athletics team. Please do encourage your child to come along if they are interested.

Enjoy your weekend!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week we kicked off with an assembly with Ms Tongue covering Mental Health Awareness Week. This covered the choice to do acts of kindness throughout your day, and the benefits of being kind not only to others but the impact it has on your own wellbeing as well.

All of the students in Year 8 visited this week the Wimbledon Buddhist Temple where we were welcomed into the grounds and got to see the impressive architecture inside and outside of the building. The walls on the inside were covered in murals depicting Buddha and the stories of his life. We were hosted by several Monks and nuns and they gave us a great run down on the history of the religion and what all the artifacts inside the temple were and their significance to the Buddhists that visit. We then did a guided meditation with the monks and had the opportunity to visit their gardens and wildlife areas where we learnt more.

On Tuesday a few students were lucky enough to attend a STEM event at the Science museum where we were greeted by many prize winning female engineers from a variety of backgrounds and the students got to meet all of them in a one on one capacity and ask their own questions. The students came away inspired and enlightened about future paths open to them. This was a very popular event and so we hope to put on other events where others can meet inspiring female STEM role models in the future.

This week our top ePraise point scorers are Jessica B, Anastasia K 8PCO and Esha K 8FLY. Great job girls.

Next week is the last week in this half term and so we will be focusing on hard work in lessons and boosting attendance. Many of our students are close to getting vouchers for the number of behaviour points so boosting these points in the last week of term is a priority for many.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

We have had another busy week and I have been visiting Year 9 students in some of their lessons. It is always so lovely to see the students enjoying their subjects and the standard of work produced is very impressive. I was particularly impressed to see the wonderful healthy and colourful stir frys being made by year 9 in their DT practical lessons and students working hard on live figure drawing in art. Year 9 have also enjoyed welcoming visitors from France, they have been joining them in lessons, offering a chance to practice their language skills and it has been lovely to see new friendships being made.

This week Year 9 have had their DofE in school training which prepares students for their awards, focusing on developing skills, volunteering, physical fitness, and expedition planning. Training covers preparing kit, camp craft, navigation, first aid, and cooking. It has been wonderful to see year 9 taking the training very seriously and enjoying some time outdoors.

This week we had another Rounders match against Twickenham School year 9 won convincingly 14 – 2.5 which is a fantastic winning margin. They played incredibly well throughout – great effort by all! Next week during PE we will be offering year 9 the opportunity to trial for the District Athletics team. I encourage all of our budding athletes to sign up.

Well done to 9PIR who are topping the epraise league table this week for Year 9! Closely followed by 9FDR and 9EDA. It is great to see so many epraise points awarded – lets keep up the great work!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

As we approach the end of Summer Term 1, I would like to thank you for your continued support throughout a busy and productive half term. Please remember that we are approaching the final week before the half-term break and we want students to focus on ‘being their best selves’ in and out of lessons. This week, Year 10 students attended an engaging and informative assembly delivered by our Year 12 students about stepping up to A Levels. The presentation provided useful insight into Sixth Form life, subject expectations, and addressed many frequently asked questions. It was fantastic to see our older students sharing their experiences and offering advice to support Year 10 students as they begin thinking ahead to their future pathways.

Well done to all students who recently applied for the roles of House Captain and Prefect. We were extremely impressed by the quality of applications and the enthusiasm shown by so many students wishing to contribute positively to school life. We will be in contact shortly once the final selections have been made.

Thank you to all parents and carers who attended the recent online parental consultation meetings. It was valuable for teachers and families to discuss student progress, celebrate successes, and identify areas for continued improvement. We appreciate the strong partnership between home and school in supporting student achievement.

After half term, students will begin preparing for upcoming assessments. We encourage all students to start organising revision materials, reviewing class notes, and developing positive revision routines early. Further guidance and support will be provided in school to help students prepare effectively.

Enjoy your weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

Next week is Safeguarding Awareness Week and, while safeguarding is always a key focus for schools, parents may not always know who to speak to or how to seek support if they are concerned about the safety or wellbeing of a child.

Questions that you may want to ask your children at home could include:

  • What makes them feel safe enough to speak up?
  • What does good support from adults look like in school?
  • Why might they sometimes stay silent about something serious?
  • How would they like you to respond if they tell you something that is worrying them?
  • What would they do if something online, in a group chat, or at school didn’t feel right?

They key messages for all the adults in a child’s life to reinforce are: that it’s ok to ask for help; to speak to a trusted adult if something worries them; and that reporting a concern is about safety, not about getting someone ‘in trouble’.

If you have any concerns about a Waldegrave student, you can contact the safeguarding team on the school number or via safeguarding@waldegravesch.org

If you are seriously worried about a child’s safety and wellbeing, including children who do not attend our school, you can also contact Richmond Single Point of Access for children’s social care on 020 8547 5008.

Ms S Moore, Director of Wellbeing

Sports Fixtures

This has been a fantastic week for sports at Waldegrave. On Tuesday our Basketball Team headed to the London Youth Games Junior NBA 3v3 regional tournament in Crystal Palace. The students from Years 8 to 10 played fantastically, winning all four of their morning games and moving into the play offs for the London Secondary School Finals. They showed fantastic team spirit and beat all the competition to make it through to the London finals.

This is incredible news as they will be taking part in the final event to be held in Trafalgar Square on Thursday 9 July. We are incredibly proud of how well they have already done and will be supporting them on the day.

Our Rounders team also were winning this week, playing home games against Twickenham School. Our Year 7/8 team won 18 – 5 while the Year 9/10 team had a final score of 14 – 2.5. Players of the match were Imogen H, 10POR, Kalila G, 8ESU and Esha K, 8FLY. Great effort by all!

Well done to everyone who has taken part in a sports team, extra curricular club or has started practising track and field athletics for district trials and Sports Day!
