Headteacher's Message

AMBER WEATHER WARNING: Extreme Heat next week
We have issued safety guidance to students during tutor time today. Please take a look at this presentation as we would appreciate your support with this at home.

Well done and congratulations to our Year 11 and 13 students for getting through the GCSE and A-Level Exams. I am sure it is a huge relief to them all to be free to enjoy their summer break. Thursday was time to say our farewells to the Year 13 students who have worked so hard and we have watched mature over the past two years. Many of these students we have watched grow from nervous, excited Year 7s who joined us in September 2019! From all the staff at Waldegrave, I would like to wish all students leaving the Sixth Form this year the best of luck with the future, wherever their journey takes them. Our door will remain open for guidance and support, both on results day and beyond. We look forward to seeing them in August for their results days when we will be available to celebrate and support with next steps.

Today it was back to the other end of the school, with half of the Year 7 cohort taking their parents and carers on a tour of Waldegrave. They got to show their families their form rooms and where all their classes take place, including science labs, the studio theatre, foodtech as well as our lovely outside spaces!

Year 10 started their assessments this week, which will help measure their progress and importantly help practice formal exam regulations. They have demonstrated a very sensible approach towards these exams, showing great maturity and have another week to go. We appreciate your support at home during this time to ensure they are well rested and balance their revision with plenty of breaks.

On Tuesday a group of very talented Year 9 students pitched their Music Lingo App, which aims to support musicians to share songs globally by translating them, in the finals of the Apps for Good programme. The judging panel included a grilling by a copyright lawyer but they were also encouraged to think big and expand their idea to be successful commercially. As well as being judged by the panel the team are also looking for votes for the People’s Choice Award. Please follow this link and cast your vote for MUSIC LINGO. Voting is open until 5pm on Monday.

Following the end of exams, Year 11 pupils with offers to attend the Sixth Form at Waldegrave were invited to an open morning of taster sessions. On Wednesday we had approximately 260 students trialling A-level classes in the subjects they are considering studying, from economics to physics, english to psychology. They also had time to meet and speak to Sixth Form staff about their A-Level choices ahead of the enrolment day in the summer. As the Sixth Form was closed to current students for the day, the Year 11s were able to enjoy using the coffee shop and social spaces all to themselves!

Finally our second cohort of Year 9s have been undertaking their Duke of Edinburgh, Bronze training expedition in the Surrey Hills over the past two days. Well done to everyone for showing perseverance and determination, while keeping a smile on your faces. Enjoy a good rest this weekend, ahead of next week’s final assessment!

I wish you all a wonderful weekend,

Ms E Tongue

Year Group Messages

Year 7

This week our Year 11 students completed the last of their GCSE examinations. We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy their well deserved summer break.

On Wednesday we held an assembly where our prospective House Captains put forward their proposals for why they should be Head Girl. Each of the 11 candidates did a short speech and the students now have the opportunity to vote for their top 3 students.

Also on Wednesday Year 7 took part in the Interhouse rounders event after school. It was a hard fought competition with Seacole being crowned Year 7 champions, with Franklin in second place.

On Friday we held the first of our parent tour & Year 8 information morning. Year 7 did a wonderful job touring their parents around the school. It was a very enjoyable morning.

Can I start with some wonderful news, the Year 7 Athletics team came second overall in the Secondary Borough Sports last week, which is a fantastic achievement. We also had the following students becoming Borough Champions; Luna B – Hurdles, Lou Lou Robinson 200m, 4 x 100m relay team – Rhea S, Luna B, Lou Lou R & Tabitha T. Zinnia W – Javelin, Isabel Mc – High Jump, Lou Lou R – Long Jump were runners up. The whole team did exceptionally well.

The top three on the epraise student leaderboard has seen a slight change in placings. This week we have in 3rd place Annabelle H, 7PRE, in 2nd place Orla S & in 1st place is Ruzgar C 7SRI who is the first student to pass the 250 epraise milestone! Very well done. We have a growing number of other students who are fast approaching 200 epraise points, we will celebrate these students soon.

The epraise tutor group leaderboard sees 7PRE staying at the top spot, 7SRI are in 2nd and 7FBO in 3rd place this week. 7SSN are doing their best to close the gap. Well done to everyone who has earned epraise this week for hard work and demonstrating our school values: enjoy, achieve and empower.

Next week Year 7 will be writing letters to the Year 6 students who will be starting at Waldegrave in September as part of our transition support. They will be giving the students their top tips for settling into life at Waldegrave.

They will also be selecting their team for the eagerly awaited Sports Day that takes place on the 7th July.

Have a lovely week!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week we held an assembly where our prospective House Captains put forward their proposals for why they should be Head Girls. Each of the 11 candidates did a five minute speech to our Year 8s on Monday and on the following tutor time the students voted for their top 3 students.

This week the Year 8s participated in the Water Rocket Challenge in Science were in groups they designed and built rockets from plastic bottles and then using water as a propellant fired them up across the school field whilst other members of the class timed them. There were epraise points awarded for best aesthetics, best scientific design and longest time in the air. We await the final results for the year group winners.

This week’s top epraise scorers are; Emma C, Allie GC, Chloe H and Hailey C all in 8PCO. Very well done to them all!

Elsewhere in the school this week the Year 11s have completed their final GCSE exams and the Year 10s have started their mock exams. The Year 9s are out on their practice Duke of Edinburgh expeditions which our year will have a chance to sign up for next year.

Next week we are holding an assembly on Humanism as on the 21st June, we mark World Humanist Day – an annual, global celebration of our shared human potential and the incredible capacity we have to create a better world through human agency.

Have a great week!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

This week our Year 11 students completed the last of their GCSE examinations.
We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy their well deserved summer break.

This was the Year 9 Blackout App Launch. All communications have been sent to parents from Mr Goulbourne. Form tutors and key staff will be able to support the process on launch day in form time this week. I would like to praise Year 9 for the mature way they have approached the situation.

Last Friday, Year 9 were given the opportunity to attend Waldegrave working lunch. Where we had an excellent speaker from University College London to speak to students about careers in the health sector and opportunities to study at UCL.

On Tuesday Year 9 met the prospective House Captains who are competing for the role of Head Girl. In our assembly the 11 candidates each gave a five minute speech to win the votes of Year 9, sharing their proposals for why students should vote for them. Students and staff across the school can now vote for up to three candidates. The announcement of the role will take place later in the term. The speeches were all very enthusiastic and I hope it has inspired Year 9 to think about whether they will choose to run for this role next year.

Our Top 3 epraisers this week are Elsie P (9PIR) with 10 points, Andrienna S (9PIR) with 8 points and Jessica F (9FDR) with 6 points. We have a growing number of students who have achieved over the 100 epraise mark – very well done to those students. Keep up the great work Year 9!

Well done to Sara, Adela and Ela from 9SHU who took part in the finals of the Apps for Good programme on Wednesday. They pitched their Music Lingo App to a panel of judges from the music app, Spotify. The team demonstrated how their app would work, translating songs into other languages to support musicians with sharing their songs and music globally. The judging panel included a grilling by a copyright lawyer and the pupils were encouraged to think big and expand their idea to be successful commercially. As well as being judged by the panel the team are also looking for votes for the People’s Choice Award. Please support Sara, Adela and Ela with their bid to win this award by following this link and casting your vote for MUSIC LINGO. Voting is open until 5pm on Monday.

We would love to hear about and celebrate our students’ achievements outside of school. Please be sure to let us know of anything your child has been involved with that deserves recognition.

Looking forward to another week with our wonderful year group!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

Congratulations to Year 10 on completing their first week of end-of-year assessments! Sitting formal exams in the Sports Hall has been a brilliant experience, giving them vital insight into the routines and atmosphere of their final GCSEs next year. We are incredibly proud of their maturity and focus – keep it up next week!

We are now just two weeks away from our highly anticipated Work Experience week! To ensure all students are fully prepared, upcoming assemblies and form times will be dedicated to delivering clear expectations regarding professional behaviour, safeguarding, and attendance while in the workplace. Please discuss these expectations with your child at home to support their readiness.

A massive congratulations to our Head Girl candidates for delivering outstanding speeches to Years 7 through 10 over four assemblies. They spoke with exceptional confidence and poise, showing their enthusiasm and sharing some excellent ideas. Voting is currently underway, and we wish all candidates the very best of luck!

As the weather gets warmer, please ensure your child/ren comes to school with a refillable water bottle so they can stay hydrated throughout the day. We also strongly encourage wearing sunscreen.

Have a lovely weekend.

Health & Wellbeing

The government has introduced new relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education guidance, that we’re legally required to follow from 1 September 2026. It features new statutory content, which includes a focus on tackling misogyny and navigating toxic online cultures, as well as reflecting the changes around the recent amendments to the Equality Act regarding sex and gender.

We are working hard to make sure our new curriculum meets the government’s requirements, as well as the needs of all our pupils. In Years 7 to 11, RSE is taught primarily through students’ Personal Development and Citizenship (PDC) lessons, as well as across the curriculum in subjects such as RPE and in tutor times and assemblies. In the Sixth Form, it is delivered through the tutorial programme, assemblies and drop down events. The lesson resources we use have primarily been developed by the PSHE Association or, if developed by other organisations, been awarded the PSHE Association Quality Mark.

Our curriculum aims to support students to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to live happy, healthy and fulfilling lives in the future, within a safe and supportive environment in which to discuss sensitive and challenging topics. It functions as the preventative curriculum branch of our school safeguarding strategy, so that students are given time and space to explore and discuss the challenges and opportunities of an ever-changing modern Britain. Students are given opportunities to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes, while developing empathy and understanding of the views of others. They also learn how to manage their own feelings and behaviours, support each other, and get help for themselves or their friends when they need it.

The Year 7 Interhouse Rounders Tournament was a fantastic event, with all students enjoying a fun and exciting afternoon of sport. There was some excellent rounders played throughout the competition, with players demonstrating great skill, determination, and teamwork. It was wonderful to see students supporting one another and working together so effectively. Parents were also able to come along and watch the action, creating a great atmosphere and cheering on the teams. Congratulations to Seacole, who finished in 1st place, followed by Franklin in 2nd, Pankhurst in 3rd, and Eliot in 4th. Well done to everyone involved for making it such an enjoyable and successful tournament.

Well done to all our athletes and players this week!
