Headteacher's Message

It has been an emotional week of last lessons for our Year 11 pupils, with favourite songs sung in language lessons, fun quizzes as well as exam questions covered. We are all incredibly proud of the students and how far they have come in the last five years. I know that they are ready for their final written exams starting at the end of next week but want to take this opportunity to remind you that revision sessions will be running until the end of the exam period. Everyone is very much looking forward to our Year 11 celebration events next week.

Please note that the school will be closed to Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 pupils on Wednesday morning during this the final celebration assembly for Year 11. The school will open gates at 11.15am, with students expected to be in class and ready to start their usual Period 3 lessons by 11.15am. Further details can be found in the letter sent home before the Easter break.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Friends of Waldegrave Quiz and Curry Night on Friday, this was a really fun night with a fantastic quiz, excellent food and an abundance of drinks shared with our wonderful school community. The event, organised by our brilliant FOW committee of volunteers, raised nearly £1,500 for the Friends of Waldegrave Charity all of which will go towards supporting and enhancing the educational opportunities available to all students at our school.

Our Year 10 Drama students have been impressing us this week with performances in assembly on Tuesday and Thursday, showing off the fantastic work they have pulled together for Component 1 of their Drama GCSE. Well done to them all for such creative work.

Pupils from Year 7 and 8 took on the UK Maths Trust’s Junior Maths Challenge on Wednesday, with 106 students sitting the paper. We are very proud of our Maths Department who always encourage our pupils to take part in these national competitions, which really challenge pupils on their mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and mathematical fluency. Well done to everyone who took part, we will soon hear whether they are through to the next level of the challenge – the Junior Kangaroo!

Please don’t forget Monday is a Bank Holiday with school remaining closed until Tuesday when we look forward to seeing all the fantastic costumes our Year 11s will be dressed in for the annual Dress Up Day.

Next week is also our final teaching week for Year 13 and we wish both them and Year 11 the best with their up coming exams.

Have a wonderful bank holiday weekend!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

The Blackout app launch took place this week and I would like to praise Year 7 for the mature way they have approached this situation. In assembly we looked at the harms of extended mobile phone use and urged students, if needed, to make a positive change in their usage of these devices.

Year 7 have been taking part in lots of reading to try and be top of the table in the House reading competition. This is a hotly contested event! Good luck to all.

Well done to all our Year 7 pupils who took part in the Junior Maths Challenge on Wednesday. 106 pupils from Years 7 and 8 sat the paper in the large hall which challenged their mathematical fluency.

This week the Year 7 & 8 Rounders team took part in their first league game against Turing House and I’m delighted to say they won by a score of 11 1/2 to 5 1/5 rounders. Luna B 7EVA was elected as Player of the Match for her fielding skills. Well done.

I am delighted to share that the following students have all received their Gold certificate for achieving over 150 Epraise points:
7EHA: Brooke B, Olivia D-P, Louisa R, Chloe WC, Arya Y
7FBO: Alice J
7PRE: Ellen B, Annabelle H
7SRI: Ruzgar C, Isabel McC, Orla S
7SSN: Jemima P, Bobbie W

The tutor group leaderboard sees 7PRE at the top with 7EHA in 2nd place and 7SSN in 3rd, although 7FBO are hot on the heels of SSN!

Keep earning Epraise points so that you can choose something exciting from the shop before the end of term.

Next week we have the delight of a Bank Holiday Monday so we hope you enjoy the extended weekend and fingers crossed the weather stays nice.

On Tuesday, Year 7 will have their first experience of a ‘Dress Up Day’ when Year 11 come to school dressed in an array of wonderful costumes, with many of the Year 11 form tutors getting involved too. It is lots of fun and I am sure they will enjoy seeing this.

Finally, please note that Wednesday is a late start for pupils. Year 11 has their final celebration assembly so all other students are due in school at 11.15am, ready to start lessons at 11.25am on this day.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

On Tuesday we had an assembly with Mr Page who hosted four Year 10 students who performed a thought provoking piece about the use and effects of social media on young girls. They performed amazingly, gave pupils a lot to think about and, I hope, inspired our Year 8 to perform like that when they get to Year 10.

This week our Year 10s had their drama exams and it was Year 11’s final week in school before their GCSE’s begin. The Year 13 Art and Photography exams were underway and all the Year 8s behaved very well to avoid making any disturbance around the school.

Well done to the pupils who took part in the Junior Maths Challenge on Wednesday, this national competition challenges pupils on their mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and mathematical fluency. Well done to everyone who took part, we will soon hear whether they are through to the next level of the challenge – the Junior Kangaroo!

Our Year 7 & 8 rounders team who took on Turning house on Monday and I’m delighted to say they won by a score of 11 1/2 to 5 1/5 rounders. Lyla TS ESU was elected as Player of the Match for her fielding skills. Well done.

Our top epraise scorers this week were Maebh B EHO, Demi W EHO, Violet D EHO.

Next week we hope you will all enjoy your bank holiday on Monday. On Wednesday the Year 11s will have their final celebration assembly on Wednesday so it will be a later start for the rest of the school. We ask that no students enter the site until 11.15am in time for their usual Period 3 lessons to start at 11.25am.

Have a great weekend.

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

We are well and truly back into the swing of things. This week I have been encouraged to see how hard our wonderful Year 9s have been working in their various subjects. In DT this week Year 9 were making the most wonderful focaccia bread which was lovely to see, while in PE they have been doing track and field athletics preparing for district trials and Sports Day!

This week, students attended an inspiring assembly led by Mr Page where members of Year 10 performed a drama piece about social media, the negative impact it can have and keeping safe online. It definitely had Year 9 reflecting and highlighted the message that online posts can often encourage social comparison, where users measure themselves against curated highlights of the lives of others, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. It was a great piece of work and we were very grateful to have Year 10 share this with us.

We have had success with the Rounders at our first fixture of the season for the Year 9 & 10 team, where we won 6-5.5 against Turing House on Tuesday afternoon. Fielder of the match was Daisy G while Mabel J was named batter of the match. Well done to the whole team! The whole team showed great team work and sportsmanship, we are proud of you!

Our top three epraise forms this week continue to be – 9PIR, 9EDA and 9FDR well done to those form classes. They are very closely followed and the challenge is now on for those top three spots. Topping our individual leader board this week is Mathilada G 9EDA – keep up the great work!

A reminder as spring is now warmer, more students are removing their school jumpers at break and lunchtimes. Please can you ensure that all clothes have name labels on them, as it is very easy for these to be misplaced. Students are also reminded to ensure that they are wearing lanyards at all times whilst on school premises. If any have been mislaid, new ones can be purchased via Parent Pay.

Finally, please note that Wednesday is a late start for pupils. Year 11 has their final celebration assembly so all other students are due in school at 11.15am, ready to start lessons at 11.25am on this day.

Thank you for your continued support – have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

Welcome to the newsletter for the third week of the summer term. We are officially in the swing of the term and the students are working hard as they approach the end of Year 10.

It was fantastic to hear about the creativity and confidence shown during the recent drama practical assessments as well as during their performances to other year group assemblies. Students have also completed their poetry analysis assessments, demonstrating a great understanding of the ‘Worlds and Lives’ anthology. The dedication to these tasks shows a mature approach to their upcoming GCSE studies – please congratulate your child on their effort!

This is a key moment for our Year 10 students to begin taking on leadership roles within the school. Applications for House Captain and Prefect positions are now open. Taking on these roles is a fantastic way to develop leadership, teamwork and responsibility. It looks excellent on future CVs and college applications. Please encourage your child to read through the information on their Google Classroom and consider applying.

We have had success in Rounders at our first fixture of the season for the Year 9 & 10 team, where we won 6-5 against Turing House on Tuesday afternoon. Well done to the team!

As a reminder of our school policy, our behaviour focus remains mobile phones: not seen and not heard in school. Phones must be turned off and stored in school bags before entering the school gates. They should not be used in corridors or classrooms.

Thank you for your continued support in ensuring a focused learning environment for all students.

Finally, please note that Wednesday is a late start for pupils. Year 11 has their final celebration assembly so all other students are due in school at 11.15am, ready to start lessons at 11.25am on this day.

Enjoy your bank holiday weekend!

Mrs O Mortimer

Year 11

This week was a very emotional one for Year 11, as it marks their last final teaching week at school. I do want to congratulate the year group on how well they have done over the past couple of weeks.

Teachers have commented on how the vast majority of students have worked incredibly hard in their lessons, as well as at home, and they should therefore feel very confident as they go into the GCSE exams. They have prepared well and done their best in lessons and this is all that can be asked of them.

This week we had the Duke of Edinburgh celebration assembly. It was brilliant to reminisce over both Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh challenges, as well as see some hilarious never seen before photos. Well done to all those students who completed bronze or silver. I know some of you are considering even going for gold in Sixth Form. Good luck to those that do!

During the GCSE period, teachers will be running revision sessions in school to support students before their exams. There is a sign up list on the tutor group classroom. We do encourage students to attend as this will be their last chance to get some advice from a subject specialist.

Key dates coming up:
Year 11 Dress up Day – 5th May 2026
Year 11 Final Celebration Assembly – 6th May 2026
Year 11 Prom – Thursday 25th June

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Year 11 final celebration assembly on Wednesday.

Have a lovely weekend!
