Headteacher's Message

This has been another highly emotive week at Waldegrave. After a fabulous display of creativity, as well as some serious competition against the teachers in the benchball, at the Year 11 Dress Up Day on Tuesday we said fond farewells at a tearful but happy, Final Celebration Assembly. This was followed by the swift start of GCSE exams yesterday, with German and Turkish language exams, which will continue over the next six weeks.

It was great to see so many parents taking part in the Year 10 parent and carer meetings on Wednesday. This was an invaluable opportunity for families to catch up with teachers ahead of students transitioning into their final GCSE year. Thank you so much to all the parents, carers, teachers and staff for making this event such a success.

Today our Year 13s are saying goodbye to classrooms as this has been their final week of lessons before the first A Level exam for Economics students on Monday. It has been a pleasure to see them develop over the past two years and we look forward to celebrating their achievements in their final assembly on 18 June when the final A Level exam will have been completed by our Maths students.

We wish all our students the best of luck during the exam period. The teachers will be running revision sessions in school for Year 11 to support pupils before their exams, which we encourage pupils to attend.

We have published an exams handbook with information for parents and students on our website this week. This includes an overview of the exam timetable and answers the key questions you or your child(ren) may have. Form tutors, subject teachers, Heads of Year, hub staff and our Exams Officer are all available for students during this time, any further queries or concerns can be emailed to sixthform@waldegravesch.org.

Have a lovely week!

Year Group Messages

Year 12

Year 12 students will be starting to get their mock examination papers and grades back. Feedback will be given in lessons to students. This is a reminder that students are now following their normal school timetable, with a slightly altered week beginning the 18 May.

The Year 12 Enrichment Week will begin on Monday 18 May with a variety of activities and talks for students. Mr Bannister will give a personal statement briefing and Mr Montgomery will give a briefing about the Extended Project Qualification, or EPQ, launch. The EPQ is an optional additional qualification that is open to all students, equivalent to half an A level, and is an independent project they can undertake on a topic of their choice.

The week will also include talks covering apprenticeships and legal careers as well as a medical networking event. On the Friday, 22 May, Year 12 will enjoy a well deserved trip to Thorpe Park!

All information regarding the Enrichment Week will be shared with Year 12 during their tutor time.

Please may I ask you to remind students that they must attend all lessons and all tutor times. If a student does not feel well during the day, they must let Sixth Form Reception know, so a phone call can be made home and teachers told. Students must not just leave the school site if they are unwell.

All appointments must be sent to Sixth form Reception in advance to ensure we are aware of absences and can prepopulate the registers in advance.

Many thanks for your support with these matters – have a great weekend.

Ms R Pugh, Head of Year 12

Year 13

This week has been, as always, really busy and rather emotional for our Year 13 students. Art A Level students were taken off timetable for 4 days and have now completed their 15-hour exam. Their final pieces look rather splendid!

On Thursday 18 June and just before the final celebration assembly starts, all Year 13 students, as well as their parents and carers will be invited to see the work that had been produced by all Art, Fashion and Textiles and Photography students. More details will be shared with all in due course.

The Modern Foreign Language students have also now completed the oral part of the exam for their A Level. I would like to wish them all the best of luck once again!

The last timetabled lessons for Year 13 students have now taken place, which was rather emotional for most of our students. Teaching staff will continue to be available to meet with students during their study leave. If any of them would like to meet with a subject teacher during this time they will need to email them directly to arrange a mutually convenient time.

Our final celebration assembly will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 18 June following the final A Level exam. Further details about this event will be shared closer to the time. If any of the Year 13 students needs support during the entirety of the exam season, they can of course, reach out to their subject teachers, form tutors, myself or Mr Bannister.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best of luck once again for the forthcoming exams!

Have a lovely weekend.

Health & Wellbeing

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week and this year’s theme is Action: for yourself, for someone else, for all of us. The Mental Health Foundation explains that “Action is not separate from awareness, it’s a natural extension of it. When people find out more about mental health, when they recognise early signs of problems in themselves and others, when they know what support looks like and what they can do to maintain their mental health, they are already taking action. When greater numbers of us take action, communities of motivated people are laying the foundations for a society that prioritises good mental health. This is action at its most powerful.”

Kathy Jaloussis, one of our school counsellors, has produced this short video with tips about how we can take action to support our own mental health or support someone else.

The Mental Health Foundation highlights that consistent action leads to habits and that sustainable mental health habits have long term benefits. Their website has a range of tips for short term ‘easy wins’ and longer term habits that can enhance everyday wellbeing. My favourite tip from the list is to put on an upbeat song to lift your mood, to provide quick relief from unpleasant feelings. Two songs that I rely on are One Day Like This, by Elbow, and Don’t Stop Me Now, by Queen: try them out!
