Headteacher's Message

This Wednesday we held our first Drop Down Day of the academic year, with students across the school off timetable for the day and taking part in various enrichment activities. My thanks not only to all the staff who made this day such a success but also to nearly 60 guest speakers from our parents and wider community who came to speak to our pupils about options and career choices. This day would not have been so memorable without the time and effort you all put in.

Year 7 learned about theatre production and the wide range of highly skilled professionals required to put on a live performance before venturing off to the Lyceum Theatre in the heart of London’s West End to see the matinee performance of The Lion King!

Year 8 took part in an African Culture Day where they explored the music and art of cultures from across this continent through drama and dance, as well as taking part in jewellery making and a quiz.

Years 9, 10 and 11 were more focused on skills and options for their GCSEs. Year 9 took part in an options taster session day, Year 10 participated in the Jack Petchey Speak Out workshops in support of the oracy requirement for English GCSE while Year 11 learned about study skills and wellbeing ahead of their exams next summer.

Year 12 also took part in Drop Down Day with taster lectures to help with university course selection as well as a speed networking careers event.

It was not only students who had the opportunity to learn something new on Wednesday as we invited Year 11 parents to join us at Waldegrave for a parent presentation regarding exam revision and study from educational consultant, Michele Miller. As ever she was inspirational and I am sure students and parents took a lot away from these sessions.

Today we took part in the Macmillan Coffee Morning with our House Captains leading each of our school houses in selling fantastic home bakes at break and lunch time today. Together they whisked up a storm and raised a fantastic £2,524 for this very worthy cause. Thank you so much to all the students and staff who made this event such a joyous event, as well as to all the parents and carers who helped bake at home! The donation pot on Parentpay is still open until Monday and it would be wonderful to creep those funds raised for the UK’s leading cancer support charity a little higher.

Finally, a reminder that next Thursday, 15 October, there will be a late start to the school day following the Sixth form Open evening and to accommodate the Year 10 information morning for families with the pastoral team.

Students across the school and Sixth Form will have all their normal timetabled lessons but the day will be compressed, with lesson timings adjusted to accommodate this. Students should arrive on site from 10.15am ready and prepared for their lessons on that day. Registration will take place in form rooms at 10.30am.

Have a lovely weekend.

Year Group Messages

Year 7

It has been such a busy and fun week for Year 7 with our off timetable activities for Drop Down Day on Wednesday and our bake sale offering plenty of sweet treats today.

Year 7’s Drop Down Day was focused around The Lion King. The day began with students getting “Ready to Roar” by taking part in a variety of activities in their tutor groups, from learning about what goes on to put on such a large scale production, career opportunities for later in life, to how to write a job application to be part of the team. They also had some fun getting active by taking part in Lion King themed dances which were great fun.

The wet weather didn’t put a dampener on our journey into London to watch the matinee performance of the Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre in London’s West End. We walked over the Thames with our waterproofs and saw the sights before engaging in the performance and eating lots of treats! We even knew the name of the actor who played Scar and asked for a wave from George at the end of the show and got one! What a day it was, a long & busy one but well worth it.

Year 7 have been busy at home too and this morning brought in many of their House themed baked creations in support of Macmillian Cancer Care as part of our Macmillan Coffee Morning. There were so many cakes and bakes it was a sight for sore eyes! Thank you to everyone who baked at home, bought tokens and ate cakes for a good cause. The donations pot on ParentPay will remain open over the weekend if anyone wants to add to the total.

Congratulations to Autumn P, 7EWI and Ellie W, 7SDE our ePraise stars who have earned the most points this week. They have enjoyed a treat with the stars from all the other year groups with Mr Gerald this afternoon.

The ePraise tutor group leaderboard sees 7SDE stay at the top spot, 7PGO move up to 2nd place and 7EHO in 3rd place this week. Well done to everyone who has earned epraise this week for hard work and demonstrating our school values: enjoy, achieve and empower.

A reminder of the important information shared with you and your child regarding the launch of Blackout:

  • Webinar: Parents and carers are invited to attend a webinar on the use of the Blackout app on Tuesday 13 October at 5 pm. This event will last approximately 30 minutes. Specific questions you may have for the blackout team or Waldegrave staff about the technology can be shared in advance. Please register for the webinar and submit any questions using the following link.
  • Blackout installation: On Wednesday 14 October all students will be sent their login code for the app to their school email address. Students who will be bringing a smartphone to school will need to install, with parental supervision, the app on their phone after school that day.
  • Support: Staff will support students on the morning of Thursday 15 October to ensure that they have been able to activate their account, and help with any technical issues.

Thank you for your continued support in helping our young people develop healthy digital habits.

Finally, please note that school photographs can now be orders following proofs being sent home this week. Please see email sent home for full details.

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week students engaged in a wonderful range of activities with our off timetable Drop Down Day on Wednesday. The Year 8 students took part in an African Culture Day, learning about this through art, music and dance. They participated in a range of workshops including Nigerian drumming, African fabric prints, griots (African story telling), jewellery making and a quiz.

Students also did a wonderful job providing baked goods – they must have been busy baking on Thursday evening – and purchasing cakes and treats for our annual MacMillan Coffee Morning. We raised a fantastic £2,524 all for this fantastic cause but the donations pot will remain open on ParentPay over the weekend if anyone wants to add to the total.

Well done to Brooke B, 8EHA and Sam L, 8EHA who were awarded the highest number of ePraise points last week as well as Isabel M, 8SRI and Aden S, 8PCL who were the ePraise stars this week and received a reward from Mr Gerald.

8PCL is currently leading the tutor scoreboard, closely followed by 8EAL and 8SRI. Keep up the great work Year 8!

Next Thursday, November 15, students have a delayed start due to open morning events. They need to arrive at 10:15am to be ready for lessons to start at 10.30am.

Finally, please note that school photographs can now be orders following proofs being sent home this week. Please see email sent home for full details.

Have a lovely week.

Year 9

It has been another fantastic week for Year 9! We have seen great focus in lessons and continue to hear some really positive feedback from tutors and subject teachers. We had a fire drill in school this week and year 9 was exemplary throughout, well done!

We had a fantastic Drop Down Day which focussed around Options. A wonderful opportunity for students to sample subjects and experience aspects of the KS4 curriculum. They said:

“It was intriguing to experience classes with the other form groups, like we would in Year 10. The careers networking was inspiring, particularly the paramedic! Taster sessions were very informative to help us make our choices.“

“Drop Down Day helped us to feel like we were going to make the right choice for our GCSEs. It was also a fun and informative day.”

“Drop Down Day was very useful  and informative and helped us to have a better understanding about the option we might choose. It helped us to feel more confident and have a better insight of the options.”

Well done to everyone who helped bake cakes for our MacMillan Cake Sale. It was a truly successful example of the school coming together as a community. Students did a wonderful job making cakes and buying treats, helping to raise a fantastic £2,524 all for this good cause. The donation pot will remain open on ParentPay over the weekend if anyone wants to add to the total.

Well done to the year 9 Netball Team who played away against Christ’s School on Wednesday, the camaraderie and teamwork displayed were exemplary. See full details of matches this week in our Sports Fixtures section below.

Well done to Lara DS, 9PFO who is the top of the Year 9 ePraise leaderboard and to this week’s ePraise stars, Erika C and Cecile G both 9SGU who have been awarded a treat from Mr Gerald for their hard work. Keep it up Year 9!

Looking forwards, next week on Thursday it is a late start with students not allowed on school grounds until 10.15am.

We will also have the Borough Netball Tournament for our Year 9 netball team so we wish them the best of luck!

Finally, please note that school photographs can now be orders following proofs being sent home this week. Please see email sent home for full details.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ms G Wood, Heads of Year 9

Year 10

Year 10 had a fantastic Drop Down Day this week which was focused on Jack Petchey Speak Out – Y10 have been preparing for the oral requirement of their English GCSE with their English teachers and a wonderful team from Jack Petchey.

It was wonderful to see Year 10 engaging with the activities and sharing their stories through creating inspiring speeches. They very much enjoyed the day and showed a very mature attitude throughout. I do encourage you to speak to your child at home and ask them to share with you what they enjoyed, found interesting or insightful about the day.

There were some incredible sweet treats baked by our Year 10s which were sold as part of our Macmillan Coffee Morning sale today, the Year 11 house captains were incredibly impressed by their creativity. We raised a fantastic £2,524 but the donations pot is still open on ParentPay over the weekend.

It has been wonderful to see so many of Year 10 engaging with extra curricular activities – keep this up! We have seen an increase in Year 10s with the various sports clubs on offer and encourage your child to come along if they want to improve their fitness or just to exercise socially. Music clubs are also a very popular choice and a great way to meet others from across the school community.

Well done to those Year 10 students who have achieved epraise this week – both in lessons, during the DDD and in form time for: working collaboratively, producing great work, supporting each other and the teacher/ tutor and showing excellent engagement. A special mention must go to our leading students, last week Valentina H, 10PAH and Amy M, 10PIR topped the ePraise leaderboard and this week it is Erin D, 10PAH and Amy M, 10PIR (again!) very well done! Keep up the fabulous work Year 10!

Looking forward there will once again be a focus on equipment. It is important that all students are fully equipped and preparing themselves for the school day. We are asking that parents and carers perform a stationary check and remind students to remember their Chromebooks. Temperatures are beginning to change, please remind your child to wear a labelled warm/waterproof coat to school.

As we look towards the two final weeks of this term. I would remind all of Year 10 to maintain the high expectations that have been set throughout the year.

Finally, please note that school photographs can now be orders following proofs being sent home this week. Please see email sent home for full details.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Mrs N Lyddon, Head of Year 10

Year 11

Our main celebration this week is the outstanding success of our recent Drop Down Day. I want to extend a massive thank you to all of our Year 11 students for their exceptional maturity and active engagement throughout the day.

During the day, students engaged in a variety of vital sessions tailored to their upcoming milestones:

  • Michele Miller Revision Workshops: We were delighted to host Michele Miller, a renowned specialist in study and revision strategies, who delivered dedicated 90-minute workshops to empower students with practical preparation tools.
  • Targeted Subject Core Revision: Students rotated through focused booster sessions in English, Maths, and Science to consolidate their classroom learning.
  • Wellbeing & Physical Activity: Balancing hard work with self-care, students participated in rejuvenating Yoga sessions and concluded the day together with an energetic whole-year PE activity in the Sports Hall.

They threw themselves into every session with a brilliant attitude, showing exactly the kind of dedication and focus we need from them during this milestone year. It was a pleasure to see them working together so effectively.

Thank you also to the many parents and carers who attended the evening seminar with Michele Miller. It was fantastic to see so many of you engaging with her specialist advice on how to best support your child’s study habits at home.

I would also like to say well done to all the Year 11 House Captains for making the Macmillan Coffee Morning and House themed bake sale such a success. They raised the highest funds ever from a Waldegrave bake sale event, with £2,524 of donations given in return for a a bumper crop of baked goods. The donation pot will remain open on ParentPay over the weekend if anyone wants to boost this record-breaking amount further.

As we head into the final fortnight of this term, our collective focus must be on excellent attendance and punctuality. We know just how critical every single lesson is for Year 11 at this stage of the academic year. Missing even a single day or arriving late can create gaps in knowledge that are difficult to fill before the mocks. Thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child arrives on time and ready to learn every day.

Looking ahead, our mock exams will begin immediately after the half-term break. With these fast approaching, sharpening revision skills must become a priority for all students right now. To help support this at home, please remember that the slides and resources from our recent Key Information Evening are available on our website. These slides contain vital information, study schedules, and helpful resources designed specifically to support your child’s independent study. I highly encourage you to review these together over the weeks.

Finally, please note that school photographs can now be orders following proofs being sent home this week. Please see email sent home for full details.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support.

Health & Wellbeing

October is ADHD Awareness Month. For a variety of reasons, boys are diagnosed with ADHD two to three times more often than girls and they are more likely to be diagnosed early in life. Researchers are currently investigating whether there is a true difference in incidence of the condition between males and females, or whether differences in rates of diagnoses are due to other factors such as gender bias or variations in presentation of symptoms. Overall, however, women and girls are less likely to be properly diagnosed with ADHD, with boys and men being more likely than girls and women to be referred for services even when their symptom profiles are exactly the same.

Women and girls with ADHD tend to have a higher incidence of depression and anxiety. This could, in part, be due to a tendency of girls and women to exhibit internalizing behavior (anxiety, depression, people pleasing) while boys and men in general are more likely to display externalizing behaviors (hyperactivity, disruptive behaviors) but there has yet to be an agreed upon reason for this difference.

This blog, on the Young Minds website explains one young woman’s experience and their ADHD and mental health page is a really useful resource, including self-care tips for young people. Find those ‘Self-care tips for people who feel like a Ferrari with bicycle brakes’ here.

More information about living with or supporting someone living with ADHD can be found on the ADHD and You and ADHDUK websites.

Sports Fixtures

We had a week of netball and rugby in sports. Our Year 10/11 Netball team was out on Wednesday against Lift Richmond Park Academy on Wednesday and on Thursday against Christ’s School. These were closely fought matches but unfortunately stolen at the last minute by strong opponents. The team showed great resilience but couldn’t gain back their lead in the final quarter of these games. Player of the match was taken by Daphne E, 11EFR on Wednesday, followed by Jasmine C, 10SHU on Thursday.

The Year 9 Netball were also playing on Thursday, winning their game against Christ’s School 9-5 points. It was a highly competitive game and the students showed great team spirit throughout. Players’ players were Ariana V, 9SON and Charlotte C 9SGU while the teacher’s player of the match was Lily KJ, 9PCO.

Also on Thursday our Sixth Form boys joined up with students from Orleans Park to create a team to play a friendly fixture against Sir Richard Reynold’s Catholic College in Rugby 15s. This will be part of a three series friendly, with the final game hopefully being hosted at Richmond RFC. Finn M, 13PTA and Toby E, 13VJA scored both tries for the team and Ben P, 13NSI made one of the conversions. We narrowly lost 14-15 in the last minute with a penalty conversion. It was a great first game out for the lads and hopefully we have more to come!

Next up for Sixth Form sports is Basketball on Monday at Sir Richard Reynold’s Catholic College, while lower down in the school we have football, netball and basketball matches next week. Good luck to the teams and all those in training!
