Headteacher's Message

Year 7 took part in the first of our Thames Young Mariners Trips this week with half of the year group having taken part in kayaking and testing out their raft building skills – did they float or sink? You will have to read the Year 7 section from Mrs Bashford-Hynes to find out more but I know from all the excited chatter in the hallways that they certainly all had plenty of fun!

Our Year 8s have been busy practising and preparing for the Year 6 tours they will be leading over the next couple of weeks. They have been very impressive during their practice runs and it is hard to imagine that it is already a year since they were dipping their toes into Year 7 and heading off on their own kayaking adventures.

On Tuesday Year 11 visited the Through My Lens exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. It was really wonderful for the students who had taken part to see their works on display in such a prestigious gallery. That evening we also welcomed a large number of Year 11 parents to our Information Evening to discuss the GCSE year including where to access support.

Last Thursday we sent our next set of Duke of Edinburgh challengers out into the wilderness (The Ashdown Forest). It was Year 11 again but this time they were on their practice expedition for the Silver Challenge. They had a wet start on Thursday but it was dry overnight and I have heard from the teachers on the trip that everyone has been enjoying themselves. I am sure they have a few adventures to share and have earned a good rest this weekend!

Finally we have sent out a letter last week regarding online safety which I would encourage you to read. As a school we work hard to teach our students how to use technology responsibly but we know that a strong partnership between home and school is vital to keep our young people safe and well. If you are interested in learning more please see our Parent Guide and you can register to attend an online safety parent workshop here.

Have a lovely week.

Year Group Messages

Year 12

Year 12 students had another great week. They are all settled now into their A Level courses and are working really hard in and out of lessons. Today was the deadline for any subject changes. No further requests will now be granted.

This week, we are officially starting our enrichment program. Students were asked to pick their preferred option last week. They will all be informed early next week which extra-curricular activity they have been allocated to take part in. This is a compulsory session and any unauthorised absences will be treated in the same fashion as if students didn’t attend a lesson. This is a piece of information that has already been communicated to the students on a number of occasions and in different ways.

On Friday 25th September, we have our first Waldegrave Working Lunch of the year. Any students who are interested in a career in government, politics and the civil service, or wants to know what happens behind the scenes of Downing Street, how they can apply and secure a fascinating role working for the government, as well as what they need to do as students to have a career in government, should most certainly attend this really fascinating talk. It will take place in the Main Hall and it will start promptly at 12:30.

Finally, students using the 11-15 Zip Oyster Photocards should be aware that it will be expiring this month. If they want to keep getting free bus travel and reduced fares on London trains and underground services, parents need to apply for a 16+ Zip Oyster Photocard. This costs £22 and lasts for 2 years. It can take up to 2 weeks to receive. Apply here.

Enjoy your week!

Mr C Stavrou, Head of Year 12

Year 13

Well done to Year 13 who are settling back into their routine and working hard both in lessons and during work periods. A reminder for students to continue to wear their lanyards when on the school site and to sign in and out of the building. Phones are allowed to be used in the sixth form area, but must not be out when walking around the main school site.

A reminder that if students are intending to complete an early entry UCAS application, the deadline for applying is 15th October at 6pm.

Congratulations to Elliott B who has been awarded a Level 5 Associate Diploma in Music Performance by the London College of Music for Performance – Musical Theatre. This is a fantastic achievement, well done!

We are always keen to hear about student achievements from extracurricular activities from outside of school, please do share these via sixthform@waldegravesch.org marked for my attention.

This coming Friday, 25 September, there will be a “Waldegrave Working Lunch”. Students are invited to the main hall at lunch to listen to our speaker from the Cabinet Office. As part of the government team responsible for major national crises and emergencies like extreme weather, pandemics, major fires and transport issues, our speaker is sure to give a very interesting talk. This will be great for any students who are interested in a career in government, politics and the civil service. They can find out what happens behind the scenes of Downing Street and how our speaker got such a fascinating job.

A final reminder that all students are expected to attend tutor time and should be in their form rooms ready to register at 8.35.

Have a great week!

Health & Wellbeing

At Waldegrave we teach our students about digital responsibility and online safety with the understanding of the negative impact an unhealthy relationship with technology can have, particularly on young girls.

Digital anxiety is stress, worry or fear directly caused by using modern devices (smartphones/tablets etc), social media or the fast pace at which technology is evolving. Young people can struggle to get the balance right when they are constantly connected, feeling forced to answer notifications and texts immediately, feeling mentally drained by a constant stream of news or updates, or feeling social pressure when comparing their lives to others on social media.

We have shared some information on how to set up parental controls this week in our Parent Guide but here are some tips on how to set healthy habits for everyone at home:
Lead by example: Children and young people copy behavior more than they listen to rules; avoid looking at your phone while they are talking to you. Check in with your own tech habits and adjust your behaviour to reflect what you would like to see in others.
Establish a family tech agreement: Involve everyone in the home and allow room for children to come up with their own ideas so they feel heard rather than punished. Ensure rules are realistic for everyone and agree on consequences in advance so there is consistency (e.g. losing screen time for a day if the family agreement is broken)
Create tech-free times and zones: Keep phones and laptops out of the bedroom to improve sleep and away from meal times to encourage face-to-face conversation. Encourage everyone to spend the first 30–60 minutes of the morning and the last hour before bed completely offline.
Quality over quantity: Distinguish between passive scrolling (TikTok or YouTube Shorts) and active creativity (learning to code, drawing on a tablet, or video-calling family). Watching a film or playing on a games console together as a family turns isolated screen time into a shared social experience.
Mobile spring clean: Declutter your apps by removing social media from your home screen, reducing temptation to scroll mindlessly. Mute all non-essential notifications so your phone stops interrupting your day.

Internet Matters offers online safety advice, practical tools and resources to help children stay safe and thrive online. You can find their digital family agreement template here.

I also want to share some upcoming webinars that the Charlie Waller Trust are hosting to help with young people’s mental health.

Sports Fixtures

This year Waldegrave Sixth Form has entered into the extra-curricular basketball league and started with a friendly borough tournament hosted by Hampton Boys. The tournament started with 4v4 12 minute half-court games. We played Sir Richard Reynolds, Turing and Hampton Boys Schools and whilst we did not win any matches in this round, they were all high scoring games. The tournament ended with 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th play offs, 5v5 full court. Waldegrave played against Sir Richard Reynolds and came out victorious with a 21-19 win! Well done to the whole team – there were some excellent plays shown, with a stand out performance from Joseph S and great captaincy from Joshua C. Roll on the league games!
