Headteacher's Message

This is our final bulletin for the Spring Term. It has whizzed by as we knew it would with only five weeks in this half term and so much to fit in. The trips have included visits to the Natural History Museum for our Wildlife Photographer competition winners, listening to the annual world traders Tacitus lecture for Sixth Formers, attending the Old Operating Theatre to support the history of medicine unit for Year 10s, a theatre trip to see ‘Our Town’ for Year 12s, conferences for Sixth Formers – Maths in Action, Medics Conference, the Candle Conference and a Community Safety Conference. This has all been in addition to departmental events such as the talk with feted playwright Ava Pickett, the Independent State Schools Partnership (ISSP) music day, Richmond Music Trust’s Choirs Connect and our wonderfully fun Waldegrave Bake Off!

I’m not quite sure how we have fitted it all in but the students have certainly excelled as this week’s termly celebration assemblies demonstrated. These events recognise the achievements of the term for each year group and this week we celebrated with Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 13 all marking their successes.

Congratulations to 8PCO this week’s winners of the Year 8 Bake Off Challenge. Their chocolate and strawberry cupcakes with a chocolate curl were a real standout but everyone of the entries was thoroughly enjoyed by the judges at breaktime today. Well done to runners up 8PFO and 8FGC.

Today we have also cracked a few jokes for Comic Relief and we are very grateful for all the donations received for today’s non-uniform day in aid of this fantastic cause. We have raised over £1200 and will keep the ParentPay account open this week for any additional donations.

Next week we will honour the achievements of Year 7 and Year 8, as well as mark the start of the Easter break with our Easter Bonnet parade for these year groups. This is always a fantastic display of creativity, imagination and engineering skills and I am sure there will be plenty of surprises on the day.

A reminder that there will be a webinar on Tuesday 24 March at 5:30pm to answer questions from parents and carers about the rollout of mobile phone app, Blackout, following the Easter break. You will need to register your interest to attend this event via our google form. A recording will be made available after the event for those unable to attend.

On a final note please can I ask all parents to speak to your child over the weekend about road safety. Our staff on gate duty at the end of each day regularly need to remind pupils to look before crossing the road, particularly those who are distracted by their mobile phones. We will also be raising awareness of this during tutor times.

Next week there will be no parental bulletin but our termly School Magazine will be published. I do hope you enjoy reading the pupils’ articles covering the events of this past term.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend, especially those celebrating Eid ul Fitr and Nowruz or Persian New Year, may you all enjoy this special celebration.

As this is the last bulletin of the term I will also wish you all a great Easter break and remind those preparing for exams to make time for some rest and relaxation too.

Year Group Messages

Year 7

This week has been another busy one for Year 7. They have been voting in the Richmond Youth Elections, in which we have six Waldegrave students standing for a place on the UK Youth Council.

Our students have also continued with their brilliant science experiments this week with 7EVA getting their chance to make some volcanos in class. This all looked like fantastic fun!

Then later this week we have all been creating & telling jokes to try and make us all laugh ahead of the best joke competition on Friday. Take a look at our instagram or read next week’s School Magazine to read all the jokes.

Then on Friday Year 7 came into school in a sea of red outfits on our non-uniform day to raise money for Comic Relief. Well done to all of Year 7 for making such an effort and congratulations to 7PCL for their winning joke!

Year 7 Basketball team played the league final against RPA on Thursday after school and have been named the League Champions as well as the tournament winners! Read more in the Sports Section below.

Here are the three students at the top of the individual epraise leaderboard: Annabelle H (7PRE), Arya Y (7EHA) & Alice J 7FBO. Well done to Sam L, Chloe R, Louisa R, Raffi B, Olivia DB, Constance G, Mola L, Maya F, Elizaveta F-V & Divina N-U who have all earned 100 epraise points since starting in September. There have been lots of Epraise points earned last week!

The overall tutor group leaderboard sees a new leader with 7PRE in first place, 7FBO in second and 7SSN in third. Keep earning those epraise points.

Next Monday we have our second Celebration Assembly where students have been nominated for enjoy, achieve & empower awards for each subject and for tutor time and we will find out who the winners are. Good luck all.

A reminder to keep working on your Easter Bonnets ahead of the Easter Bonnet Parade next Friday morning!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week we held the fantastic Year 8 Bake off. We were overwhelmed by the effort and creative talents of our Year 8 students each representing their form groups had to create 12 identical cupcakes with a surprise filling. Each cake had to be made up of two different flavours therefore using two complementary batters and have a surprise in the centre of each cake! All cakes were required to look the same & be presented creatively.

The judging was on Friday by the Year 8 form tutors, teachers and senior leaders and all cakes were given marks out of 10 in the categories of; flavour, texture, presentation and the use of complex skills. Well done to all the bakers – you did your forms proud with some really amazing bakes.

In first place with some spectacularly presented cupcakes topped with a chocolate curl came 8PCO. Well done to Charlotte, Chloe and Lily for your chocolate and strawberry cakes. They were closely followed by Ella, Nina and Maryam of 8PFO with their honey & chocolate marbled cupcakes (I think it was the crunchy topping that tipped the votes!) in second place. In third Charlotte, Matilda and Grace in 8FGC also wowed judges with the perfect chocolate sponge in their dark chocolate and berry cupcakes.

We also celebrated Red Nose Day on Friday where we hosted a form joke competition and had a wear red out of uniform day to raise money for all the wonderful Red nose charities. Well done to 8SDE and 8FLY for their winning jokes, you can see all the jokes today on our instagram feed or read them in next week’s School Magazine.

Next week is our last week of the Spring term and we will have the parent Blackout webinar running on 24th – don’t miss you chance to hear directly from the company all about our new phone policy starting with your year 8s after Easter.

On Wednesday we will have members of the eco committee who have been taking part in Richmond Council’s borough wide air quality and climate resilience project: Our Air, Our Action. MP Smarter Travel who are sustainable transport specialists have run the project for the Council, which has included four assemblies for Year 8/9 and workshops for a smaller group of volunteer’s, the students came up with initiative ideas to improve our local environment, which included a local litter pick and planting wildflowers.

On Thursday we have the Dance Showcase which is sure to be another wonderful display of talent and I look forward to seeing what Year 8 have prepared.

And Friday our day will end at 12.00 after our Easter Bonnet Parade and awards assembly.

It promises to be an action packed week!
Have a great Easter break and we will forward to seeing the students back in the summer term.

Have a lovely weekend!

Year 9

It has been another successful week in Year 9. This week I have been encouraged to see how hard all our wonderful Year 9s have been working in their various subjects. I had the pleasure of wandering into a number of the classes this week and it was wonderful to see the brilliant work of our students and I was very impressed by their enthusiasm for learning and great attitudes.

In form time this week we have been celebrating Neurodiversity week 16 – 20 March. Neurodiversity week is dedicated time to recognise and celebrate our neurodiverse community. The week aims to raise awareness, promote understanding and acceptance while challenging stereotypes and misconceptions. At Waldegrave our school culture promotes empathy and understanding of all members of our community. It is right we celebrate, recognise and learn about members of our community who are neurodivergent.

On Friday this week we had our Spring Celebration Awards, it is such a great celebration for all individuals. It is always wonderful to see students cheering, clapping and congratulating the winners of the awards. We would like to congratulate all those students who received subject and tutor awards. A huge well done to all the students who are demonstrating the enjoy, achieve and empower aspects of school life and continuing to accumulate well earned epraise points. Please remind your child that they can be awarded epraise both in lessons and form times for: working collaboratively, great work and homework, supporting each other, engagement in class activities, helping in the classroom, and supporting the teacher/ tutor.

Today we are celebrating Red Nose Day in support of Comic Relief. Pupils have really got behind this event dressing in red and sharing jokes this week for our school wide competition. Well done to 9STR for their winning joke. All the winning jokes have been shared on our instagram today and will be published in next week’s School Magazine.

As spring is now making it feel warmer, more students are removing their school jumpers at break and lunchtimes. Please can you ensure that all clothes have name labels on them, as it is very easy for these to be misplaced.

I am sure everyone is looking forward to the Easter Break. Year 9 have worked incredibly hard and they deserve a well-earned break. Students are due to return to school on Monday 13 April. With the break it is a good time to replenish any stationery or clothing that is required for the final term. We encourage you to remind your children about the key expectations around uniform, lanyards and chrome books. This will enable Year 9 to put their best foot forward and continue in the same positive way that they have started the school year. I look forward to welcoming them back into school with a spring in their step – ready for the Summer Term!

Looking forward to another great week.

Well done to all students that received a prize and well done to all of Year 11 for getting through this short but intense half term.

Teachers are now delivering mock feedback in lessons. Students are reminded to ensure that they take this feedback on board and to ask their teacher if they are not sure of anything.

Congratulations to all of our wonderful prefects that won prefect prizes. Your dedication to your roles has been very impressive to see.

Health & Wellbeing

The Big Walk and Wheel 2026 Monday 16 March – Friday 27 March 2026 Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge. It encourages pupils to swap the car for active journeys to school, helping to improve local air quality, boost wellbeing and healthy habits.

Active travel offers huge benefits for everyone, including cleaner air, healthier communities and more vibrant streets. But safety concerns remain a significant barrier for many women and girls who want to travel actively.

Research from Cycling UK shows that: 58% of women limit cycling due to safety concerns 66% feel unsafe walking at night at least sometimes 20% never walk at night The good news is that change is possible. Where protected cycle lanes, improved lighting, cycling campaigns and thoughtfully designed public spaces have been introduced, confidence and participation increase.

The #AndSheCycles campaign empowers teenage girls to get on their bikes by creating safe, supportive spaces to build confidence. The pupil-led Ambassador Programme, supported by the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, is helping more girls choose cycling with confidence. Click here to find out more.

Sports Fixtures

This week our rugby, football and basketball teams have all been challenged. First up were the under 16s playing at Orleans Park for a Rugby 7s tournament on Thursday. The team played against four teams, Orleans Park, Reigate Grammar, Grey Court and Turing House, winning three out of these games and coming second in the tournament and winning the shield. Our try scorers were: Phoebe, Eve H, Immy, Kiera and Eve B. Fantastic work team!

Our Year 9/10 footballers also played on Thursday with a 4-1 loss against Teddington. This match was on Teddington grounds with Lara D named as player of the match.

Our Year 7 Basketball team also had their final match in the Richmond Schools Sports Partnership League which they won 22-19 in a closely fought battle against Lift Richmond Park. Well done to Ava F who was named the players’ player of the match. They have now been named RSSP League Champions as well as the tournament winners!

Finally we have a 3v3 basketball tournament this afternoon – you can read more about this and a round up of sports for the whole term in the School Magazine to be published next week.

Well done to all the students who have been training, playing or working hard this term. We are proud of all the efforts you have made, whether you have won or lost a match you have still turned up and done your best.
