Headteacher's Message

This week the mock exams were completed for Year 11 and 13, which will be a relief for all students involved. Well done to them all for the hard work they have put in!

The UK Youth Parliament and Kingston and Richmond Youth Council elections are taking place this month and we are proud to say we have six students running in these elections. Good luck to Amber P (9PAH), Daisy J (10SAN), Jiya K (10EMU), Judith K (10FDO), Tamira R (10SSR) and Annabelle R (11PGU) who are in the running for a place in both of these elections. Pupils will be given guidance on how to view the manifestos and place their votes during tutor times over the coming week.

Our Year 10s have had a treat this week, visiting the Old Operating Theatre in class groups at the original site of St Thomas’ Hospital in Southwark. This is always a fascinating trip for the pupils, as they can view both the exhibits, hear from the experts and also take part in a reconstruction of an operation before the arrival of anaesthesia and antiseptics. It is gruesome stuff but a lot of fun and really brings to life the History of Medicine unit as part of their GCSE curriculum.

On Wednesday a handful of selected Year 10 students were also lucky to be brought to the Ogden Trust STEM careers afternoon at Hampton Boys School. They met with five scientists to learn about different career options that science subjects can lead to including Tom Leggett, Lead Doctor at the FA for the England parafootball teams, Andrew McHutchon, a senior data scientist at McLaren, Charlotte Massey, an International Development Manager from the National Physical Laboratory, Jen Parsons a Naval Architect and also Iryna Bennet, Technology Area Manager for the UK Atomic Energy Authority. It was a great event and will certainly inspire pupils to look towards a career in science.

Thursday was World Book Day, which our Book Champions recognised by sharing their book recommendations for each year group in the school. You can see the full list and other activities our Book Champions have been undertaking this year on our website here. The team also hosted a very successful Book Swap for our Year 7 and 8 pupils.

Our Sixth form welcomed Marion Clark, Head of Forensic Social Work at West London NHS Trust and Broadmoor Hospital for a talk about social work and the interaction between mental health, criminal justice systems and the law. The talk was very relevant to the Crime and Deviance unit for those studying sociology and the Forensic unit for psychology but was interesting to all students who attended particularly the ethics around offending and mental health.

Our Sixth Form Fashion and Photography students enjoyed trips today to the Tate Modern and the V&A. Our Photography students were invited for a behind the scenes visit Zandra Rhodes Private studio, not usually open to the public. This exciting visit was led by Piers Atkinson, Director of the Zandra Rhodes Foundation and allowed students to see the origins of the work of this amazing artist and fashion designer. The Fashion students visited the Marie Antoinette Style exhibition at the V&A exploring the lasting influence of the ill-fated queen over 250 years of design, fashion, film and art.

We have ended the week with another fantastic bake off event, this week our Year 9s have tested their talents, taking on the cupcake challenge. The flavour mixes this week included mango and matcha as well as S’mores cupcakes! Our judges were deeply impressed by the creativity on display particularly some of the more technical details. Congratulations to our winners 9SHU and to everyone who took part.

Have a great week!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

This week Year 7 found out about the Easter Bonnet Parade that takes place on the last day of term. We are looking forward to seeing all their wonderful creations!

On Thursday it was World Book day. It is a charity event held annually in the United Kingdom and Ireland on the first Thursday in March. It’s mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success. There is a strong correlation between regular reading for pleasure and mental wellbeing.

During tutor time students watched videos of two of the authors that have written World Book Day books this year. They received a free book and a World Book day token they can use to get another free book.

Our Book Champions also helped organise our second very successful Book Swap which took place on Thursday lunchtime. It was lovely to see students speaking together about the books they had read and swapping those they have finished with.

Here are the three students at the top of the individual epraise leaderboard:
Arya Y (7EHA), Annabelle H (7PRE) & Jemima P 7SSN. Well done to Florence T, Annie B, Sadie H, Olivia S, Margot KJ & Ruzgar C who have all earned 100 epraise points since starting in September.

The overall tutor group leaderboard sees a new form at the top with 77SSN in first place, 7FBO in second and 7PRE in third. Keep earning those epraise points.

Well done to those played the Year 7 Netball team this week, these were their first matches in the RSSP league. On Tuesday they had a narrow loss to Orleans Park after a great come back and on Thursday they played Grey Court with a final winning score of 11-5. Well done and good luck to the team for the rest of their matches.

Next week we will be holding our Book Fair in the conference room and we encourage students to come down and look at the various books that are available to buy. They can get £1 off for World Book day!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

A massive well done to the Year 8 netball team that competed at LEH school last Friday and came third, they were up against lots of local schools in the borough and were a great team scoring lots of goals. Good luck to them all with the rest of the season!

On Thursday Year 7 and 8 had a book swap in the hall where students were encouraged to bring in books that they had finished with in-return for books they might like to read. It was a great event and many students came away with exciting new reads.

This week our top ePraise winners are Ava J SDE, Lucie T SDE and Maja J from SDE. The top form group remains PCO with FLY closely at their heels.

There is an opportunity for Year 8 to take part in our annual Easter Bonnet Competition which takes place on the last day of term before the Easter Break. Following the wonderful efforts they made last year, it would be great to have representation from our year group entering this year. Please do encourage your child to get creative and enter this fun-filled competition.

Bake Off 2026 Every week this term we have been holding a different year group bake off and on 19 March it will be the turn of Year 8 to enter the cupcake challenge. Representatives are voted in from each form and the competition looks to be very tight this year! Stay tuned for more information and results.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

We have had a very busy week again. It has been lovely to see so many students involving themselves in the different opportunities at the school.

The past few weeks our Year 9s have been voting and sampling bakes to decide on form representatives for the Year 9 Bake Off competition and it has been wonderful to see all the fantastic bakes. This week the oven gloves are off for the grand final challenge where our Year 9 form teams /bakers are able to showcase their depth of skill and talent. The teams really have come together all united in their aim to prove their baking skills and impress the judging panel.

The judges commented on how wonderfully presented the tasty cupcakes were, along with some amazing flavour combinations – A HUGE well done to everyone who took part! The winners were announced today at lunchtime, well done to Matilda N, Anupriya G, Arin Y in the 9SHU team for their apple pie and cinnamon cupcakes. Hot on their heels – with only one point between the top three bakes – came Eva E, Mathilda G and Lola McNeil in 9EDA with tiramisu cupcakes and Amber H, Tilda T and Ruby S in 9STR with chocolate and raspberry. We will be celebrating their achievements next week in the form time. The students have clearly worked incredibly hard and all students and their supporting form teams should feel proud.

Top epraise forms for Year 9 this week are 9PIR in first on 1,838, 9FDR in second place at 1,404 closely followed by 9EDA with 1,378.

Year 9 have earned a total of 10,707 epraise since September – which is a fantastic total – well done everyone!

Marharyta K (9PIR) is still holding the pole position with an incredible 180 epraise points – excellent work!

Please remind your child that they can be awarded epraise both in lessons and form times for: working collaboratively, great work and homework, supporting each other, engagement in class activities, helping in the classroom, and supporting the teacher/ tutor.

Every two years across Richmond and Kingston Schools, colleges and youth clubs, democratic elections take place, which ensure young people from both boroughs have the opportunity to vote for their representative to the UK youth council and youth parliament elections. Next week Year 9 will have an opportunity to make their vote to elect young people to make the Kingston and Richmond youth council, which would represent the views, aspirations and concerns of young people in Richmond and Kingston. Our students have up to 10 votes and we have 6 student representatives from Waldegrave ALL hoping to be voted in.

Looking forward to another week with our wonderful year group and hopefully more of the spring sunshine!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

As we move further into the spring term, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what has already been a busy and purposeful period for Year 10. It has been wonderful to see students embracing the challenges of their GCSE courses with increasing maturity and determination, and contributing so positively to the wider life of the school.

One recent highlight was our inspiring assembly on Women in Science, where students explored the achievements and impact of pioneering scientists from across the world. The assembly not only celebrated remarkable contributions to STEM fields but also encouraged our students to reflect on ambition, resilience and the importance of representation in shaping future careers.

Our History students have also enjoyed an enriching visit to the Old Operating Theatre at London Bridge. This fascinating trip brought their studies to life, offering a vivid insight into the development of medicine and surgery through time. The experience sparked thoughtful discussion and curiosity, and staff were delighted with the engagement and conduct shown throughout the visits.

As we look ahead to the end of term, we will continue to emphasise the importance of maintaining our positive trends in attendance and uniform standards. Strong attendance remains one of the most significant factors in academic success, and we are grateful for your continued support in ensuring students arrive punctually and ready to learn each day. Likewise, high standards of uniform reflect the pride students take in belonging to our school community. By working together, we can ensure that these excellent habits remain consistent as the term progresses.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs O Mortimer

Year 11

This week Year 11 completed their core mock exams. We have been really impressed with the students’ attitude and maturity during this period and how hard they have worked. I know that you at home must feel very proud of them. We are certain that these mock exams will really help students to support them for their upcoming GCSEs in the summer.

Well done to 11PGU for getting the most epraise points this week. Congrats!

The Year 11 Prom letter has been sent out. This is always a fantastic event and we do encourage students to attend. You can purchase tickets for your child via parent pay.

This week in form time, students cast their votes on which theme to choose for the Prom, their options were: ‘A Night in Paris’ or ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream.’ The House Captains will collect the votes and we will see which theme wins next week!

Have a lovely weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

Sunday 8th March is International Women’s Day and this year is the 115th anniversary of the event. Despite this, we know that gender inequalities remain and adversely affect the self-esteem and wellbeing of girls.

This impact is really clear in the 2025 Girl Guiding survey, where 75% of women and girls between 11 and 21 years old said they had experienced the feeling that they didn’t belong or weren’t treated equally. Disabled, LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent girls felt this even more strongly. 39% of 11-18 year old girls said they thought sexism and misogyny were causes of the increase in mental health and wellbeing challenges that girls their age were experiencing. A similar number (36%) said inequality and discrimination impacted girls’ mental health and one in five said experiencing discrimination was most likely to impact their wellbeing or make them feel sad. However, the survey also identified the sense of sisterhood girls feel and how often they stand up for each other, with 70% reporting that they have stood up for another woman or girl who experienced sexism.

Consequently, this year’s IWD theme ‘Give to Gain’ seems particularly apt, as it reflects the power of reciprocity and support. As individuals, giving support means calling out stereotypes, challenging discrimination, questioning bias, and celebrating women’s success.

The IWD website suggests that there are many ways to overtly improve the lives and wellbeing of women and girls, at work, at home, and in the community:

  • Give respect
  • Give visibility
  • Give justice
  • Give resources
  • Give a voice
  • Give protection
  • Give role models
  • Give growth
  • Give access
  • Give time

Happy International Women’s Day!

Before half term we told you that our swimmers were taking part in the Richmond Swimming Championships Gala. This took place on Friday 6 February with twenty Waldegrave pupils competing in this event at Lady Eleanor Holles School. Pupils competed against local schools in the borough and brought home gold medals for four events!

Well done to:
Emilia G (9EDA) for winning the Year 9 50 meters freestyle event,
Belle D (9STR) for taking gold in the Year 9 50 meters breaststroke,
And both our Year 9 and Year 10 Freestyle relay teams for coming first in these races – Natasha G (9EBH), Daisy G (9EDA), Belle D (9STR) and Emilia G (9EDA), Immy R (10EMU), Scout T (10PWA), Inez H (10SSR) and Penelope C (10FDO).

We are very proud of the efforts of all our swimmers from Years 9 and 10 who took part on the day, they showed strength and determination and the teaching staff were very proud of how they cheered their team mates on throughout the gala.

This week our Year Y9/10 Football team went to Turing House for a match on Tuesday, beating them 1-0 with a goal scored from a header by Flossie H. Player of the match was Imogen H. Well done to the whole team for their efforts!

Our netballers have also been playing this week with the Year 7s losing to Orleans Park on Tuesday (10-6) and winning against Grey Court on Thursday (11-5). Our Year 8s also lost to Orleans (17-7) but won (13-2) against Grey Court. Well done to our players of the match as voted by their teams: Jemima, Tabitha, Chloe, Charlotte, Lola, Lily, Ava and Olivia.
