Headteacher's Message

Welcome back to the second half of our Spring Term, I hope everyone had a good break. We now have only five weeks until the Easter holiday and there is a lot of cram in, with this week kicking off with a Schools Music Day trip for 18 of our most accomplished student musicians.

The Independent-State Schools Partnership Music Day on Tuesday took place at Hampton School with our musicians joining up with pupils from other local schools to form a Wind Band, a String Orchestra or a Choir, before everyone joined together in a combined Orchestra and Choir. At the end of the day the group held a tremendous concert of the music they had worked on during this event, as well as presenting pieces from each of the participating schools. It was a sensational showcase of the talent we have not only at Waldegrave but across the Borough and I was very proud of our pupils’ efforts.

On Wednesday we sent a small group of Year 9 pupils to a Digital and AI conference held at Tiffin Girls school to help prepare students for our ever changing digital world. We also held our Year 7 Parent Consultation Meetings on Wednesday where parents heard about pupil progress and how students are settling into Waldegrave. As always, this was a great opportunity for families to ask questions and get to know our school better.

We celebrated our fantastic photographers who won the Waldegrave Wildlife Photography competition last term with a trip to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition at the Natural History Museum this Thursday. Pupils from across the school enjoyed a day off their normal timetable to see the winning shots, including the youth category, which are sure to have inspired them.

On Thursday a number of Year 12 students attended the Tacitus Lecture at Guildhall in London. The lecture was from Dr Fiona Hill, Chancellor at Durham University and a defence advisor to our Government having previously sat on the U.S. National Security Council. Her talk was entitled ‘Peril and possibility: collapsing older, emerging disorder or new order?’ covering international diplomacy, national security and global power shifts. It was a very interesting talk and left students with a lot to think about – look out for our news piece with images from this event next week.

Today we have ended our first week back with the formidable Intermediate Physics Challenge for Year 11 pupils as well as the judging of the Year 10 Bake off Challenge! The physics paper is for all students to take part in a national physics competition and to help them develop confidence in this subject, all pupils have been encouraged to take part. Just before half term, Y12 Physicists all participated in the Senior Physics Challenge Online. Every student in the class achieved a Bronze award, which they should all be very proud of.

Our Year 10s made a great effort at the Bake Off Cupcake Challenge, with a variety of colours, icing and flavours on display. The staff judging was a tough task but we managed to cajole a few of the staff to test their tastebuds and rank the bakes by flavour, texture, uniformity of decoration as well as technical skill. They were not disappointed! Well done to all the pupils who took part but there can only be one winner and it was 10PUR with their apple and cinnamon cupcakes.

Have a great week!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

It has been lovely to see Year 7 back refreshed after the half term break as it has been lovely to see a change in weather with some brighter days to help enhance our well being.

On Wednesday the music department ran an orchestra assembly for the whole of Year 7. Our own school orchestra was joined by professional musicians to showcase this ensemble giving the students a live orchestra experience and enhancing their current scheme of work in music. It was lovely to see them appreciate this experience by listening so carefully to the performances and engaging with Ms O’Brien’s questions.

On Wednesday we held Year 7 PCM, this is a very positive element of our home/school relationship which I’m sure that teachers, students and parents all found to be a very valuable experience.

The year 7 Rugby team took part in their first competition at Orleans Park school this week. The team won one game and lost two, with tries being scored by Jemima, Mary & Harper. Well done to all who played.

At the end of this half term we will hold our second celebration assembly. Teachers and tutors have started to think about their nominations for the enjoy, achieve and empower awards this week. We look forward to celebrating student achievements once again.

Here are the three students at the top of the individual epraise leaderboard:
Arya Y (7EHA), Jemima P 7SSN & Alice J (7FBO). Well done to Bobbie W, Orla S, Penelope R & Isabel Mc who have all earned 100 epraise points since starting in September.

The overall tutor group leaderboard sees a new form at the top with 7FBO in first place, 7SSN in second and 7EHA in third. Keep earning those epraise points.

Next week Year 7 can look forward to finding out about the Easter Bonnet Parade that takes place on the last day of term. This should give Year 7 plenty of time to plan their wonderful creations!

We can also look forward to the Year 7 Basketball tournament on Friday next week and wish the Basketball team good luck for this tournament after winning the league last half term. This means that they face RPA in the league final that will take place before the Easter break.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

It has been great to welcome back our students this week. Our year 8s have eagerly got back into their studies and been very respectful of the older students who are doing mock exams elsewhere in the school.

We had an assembly this Tuesday morning covering some wonderful LGBTQ role models and covered some of the history surrounding the movement.

This week Etta B, Emma C, Erika C, Chloe C, Valerie L, Alyssa L were lucky enough to attend the ASSP music trip of Tuesday and did a wonderful job representing us at Waldegrave.

On Wednesday our fantastic wildlife competition winners were taken to the National History museum to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year winning images where they were amazed by the incredible professional shots and are inspired to take more photo’s this year for our 2027 calendar!

This Friday we are holding our “Friends of Waldegrave’ Quiz night which promises to be be great fun way to meet fellow Waldegrave parents and help raise money for school projects. Why not come and support the school and put your knowledge to the ultimate test! We hope to see you there.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

It is a pleasure to welcome all of Year 9 back to school after the half term. We hope that you enjoyed a restful break and have returned to school feeling refreshed after the extended half term. It has been great to see Year 9 working hard and showing great focus in lessons and making such a positive start already.

We have lots of exciting things happening this week including the ISSP Music Trip. Wildlife Photography Trip and on Wednesday we had our Dance Workshop where some of our year group are practicing for the Dance Show.

It has been wonderful to see so many of year 9 engaging with extra curricular activities – keep this up!. We have seen an increase in Year 9s attending our early morning run club on Tuesdays do encourage your child to come along if they want to improve their fitness or just to exercise socially. Chess club is also a very popular choice and a great way to meet others from across the school community including teachers who like to be challenged in a game of chess!

Well done to all of our students who have achieved epraise points and to those forms who are leading the way. Our top three scorers this week are Angel H (9PIR), Sophie T (9SHU) and Viola C (9SHU) – very well done! A reminder that points can be used to ‘purchase’ items from the epraise rewards shop – so keep collecting!

A reminder about punctuality. We do recommend that students arrive at school at 8:30 to allow 5 minutes to get to their form time. Form time starts at 8:35 and we do expect students to be punctual for that. We appreciate your support with this at home. As spring is now making it feel warmer (and drier), more students are removing their school jumpers at break and lunchtimes. Please can you ensure that all clothes have name labels on them, as it is very easy for these to be misplaced.

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

Welcome back to all our students and families! We hope you enjoyed a restful break and are as excited as we are to dive into the weeks ahead. It has been lovely to see Year 10 return with such positive energy, settling quickly back into their routines.

This weeks assembly focused on how for many of us, we’re taught that careers are a straight line: school, university, one job, and a steady climb up a single ladder. This assembly hoped to give our Year 10s some insight into the truth that, for the vast majority, success looks more like a “squiggle” or a “zigzag”.

We have a few celebrations this week. Flo V, 10FCO, has been appointed Organ Scholar at St Mary’s Church in Twickenham, starting this coming September. We believe she is the first girl to take on this role, and also the first person from a state school. A fantastic achievement – well done Flo!

Well done to all the students who were invited to attend the Independent-State Schools Partnership Music Day on Tuesday. Only our most accomplished musicians, Evelyn B, Freda L, Jessica S and Cosette F, attended this event to take part in a joint band, choir and orchestra to practice and perform together all in one day!

Finally our fantastic photographers Mia L and Olivia D attended the Wildlife Photography trip on Wednesday. They visited the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition as their images were chosen as winners in the Waldegrave Wildlife Photography competition last term.

We are aware that for many of our Year 10s revision and testing is a large part of their school life at the moment. I wanted to give you 3 top tips to help you support your child/ren with their revision outside of school.

1. Avoid the “Reading Trap”: Simply re-reading or highlighting notes is passive and less effective. Instead, use Active Recall: close the book and try to “blurt” out everything you remember on a blank sheet, then check what you missed in a different colour pen.

2. Use the Pomodoro Technique: Work in short, intense “sprints” (e.g., 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break). This keeps your brain fresh and prevents burnout.

3. Space It Out: Don’t cram one subject all night. Interleaving (switching between subjects in one session) and Spaced Repetition (revisiting a topic 2, 5, and 7 days later) are scientifically proven to help information stick.

Have a lovely weekend!

Year 11

This week mock exams began. We have been really impressed at the maturity and level of dedication that the majority of the Year 11s have shown this week. They have worked really hard and should feel very proud of themselves. Hopefully they have found this experience beneficial. We know that they will benefit from the useful feedback from their teachers.

A special congratulations as well to all the Year 11 students who attended additional support classes after school before the half term holidays. This will make a real difference.

A reminder that we have a strict phone policy in school. Our rule is ‘not seen, not heard’ in regards to students having mobile phones. If a pupil’s phone is seen or heard then a member of staff will confiscate it and it will be kept at the relevant Key Stage Hub until the end of the school day.

Information about Easter Revisions sessions will also soon be coming out to parents and guardians. This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to get some extra support just before their final exams.

A letter about ordering the Year 11 hoodies was sent before the half term holidays. These can now be purchased in a variety of different colours.

Have a lovely weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

Our ‘Supporting your child with exam stress’ workshop for parents, delivered by the Mental Health Support Team, is fast approaching. It is an in person workshop at Waldegrave School from 6 to 7pm on Tuesday 10th March and is particularly helpful for parents of students in Years 10-13, who are preparing for public examinations. Sign up by completing this Google form.

This half term our students will be taking part in the borough-wide, anonymous Health Related Behaviour Questionnaire. The results will help us to make evidence-based decisions, tailored to our students’ needs, and for the local authority to understand the needs of children and young people across the wider community. If you have any queries about the survey please contact Ms Moore via info@waldegravesch.org

Finally, this week is Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which is run by Beat – the UK’s eating disorder charity. Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses that can affect anyone. Right now, at least 1 in 50 people in the UK have an eating disorder and the emotional and physical toll also affects millions of loved ones. When someone you love has an eating disorder, it can be overwhelming and lonely.

To support parents who are caring for children with an eating disorder, the Charlie Waller Trust have developed fully funded skills workshops, based on the New Maudsley Approach, which will provide a practical toolkit to help support a loved one. The workshops also include skills to encourage your loved one to develop resilience and embark on change, as well as opportunities to connect with parents and carers facing similar challenges, in a confidential and non-judgemental space. The workshops are:

  • Fully funded, open to all – no postcode lottery, no diagnosis needed
  • Relevant for all types of eating disorders, whatever your experience looks like
  • Suitable for carers of neurodivergent and neurotypical loved ones
  • Various dates and times available to suit your schedule

You can book a place here.

Sports Fixtures

On Tuesday our Year 9/10 football team played away against Hampton Hill, they played a brilliant match and won 5-1.

Our Year 7’s rugby first team played at Orleans Park on Wednesday playing three games against Orleans Park, Grey Court and also St Richard Reynolds, getting a bit muddy in the process but at least it was in the sunshine! They lost two games and won 1 with Jemima, Mary and Harper all scoring tries. Well done team, it looks like you all had a lot of fun!

Finally today our Year 8 netballers were out in full force today with both our A and B teams playing in the Borough cup and plate leagues. They played six games, showing great team work and ultimately our A team came in 3rd place while the B team came in 4th place.

Well done to all the students who have been training, playing or working hard this week – keep it up!
