Headteacher's Message

This past weekend two of our Year 10 pupils, Mariya A and Eva H, competed in the Rotary Young Chef Competition District Final alongside 16 other hopefuls. I am very proud to say that our students both shined with Mariya taking second place and Eva coming in fourth. This is a wonderful achievement for them both. Apart from their success, this competition is a fantastic experience for everyone taking part and develops skills that will be with them for life. Good luck to Mariya who will now go forward to the Cluster Final due to be held on 8 March.

Reading matters at Waldegrave and this week we have launched a new eLibrary for all students to access electronic and audio books from their laptops or other devices. This is an additional exciting service that complements our fantastic Library area that has a wide range of physical books, from new reads to literary masterpieces, for students to access throughout their time at Waldegrave. The Sora eLibrary can be accessed from the quick links on our website or directly from the student’s chromebooks.

On Monday and Tuesday some of our PE GCSE students who needed to be assessed in an additional sport went to White Spider climbing centre. It was lots of fun and challenged the students to push themselves beyond their comfort zones.

This Wednesday also brought former Conservative MP (2010 – 2024) and Leader of the House of Commons (2022-2024), Penny Mordaunt to Waldegrave Sixth Form to speak to our politics students. She is best known for her notable role in the Coronation of King Charles III as the first female bearer of the Sword of State but she has held many ministerial positions from Secretary of State for International Development, Minister for Women and Equalities, Defence Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons. This was thrilling talk for our students who gained a real insight into Whitehall and a career in politics. Wednesday also our Year 11 Art students visited the Tate Britain Gallery. After a train ride into London they explored over 500 years of British art covering styles ranging from modern photography to Turner masterpieces. It should certainly give them plenty of inspiration!

Today we have 20 students taking part in the Richmond Schools Sports Partnership swimming gala at Lady Eleanor Holles School. We wish them all luck and look forward to sharing the results next week.

Next week a number of Year 11 and 13 students will be performing at our Leavers Live Lounge, on Thursday evening from 6.30pm. The line up will be an eclectic mix of student led performances accompanied by our student and staff house band and is sure to be another fantastic night of music.

I wanted to share with our creatively inclined students that there is a fantastic opportunity to take part in a Creative Careers day at Orleans Gallery on Sunday 22 February (during half-term). This free event will include artist led workshops, panel discussions, networking and speed mentoring. There will be artists from sectors such as video game design, alternative hip-hop and writing, film making, art and AI, painting and more. It sounds like a great way to discover what a career in the arts could look like. Tickets for over 16s can be booked here.

Finally, the poor weather has led to an increase in traffic in the mornings in particular and I would ask that you be mindful of the rules of the road when dropping off your child. Please do not park or stop on the double yellow lines and zigzags outside the school so that children and other road users can see clearly when crossing the street. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Please note we have updated the behaviour, uniform, feedback and public assessment policies on our website this week and have emailed out the Parent, Carer and Visitor Code of Conduct this week. Your understanding and support of these policies will help maintain the strong relationship between our school and families, ensuring the Waldegrave community remains a welcoming place for all.

Have a lovely weekend!

February is LGBT+ History Month. This week in assembly students heard about this year’s theme ‘Science and Innovation’ and learned more about why LGBT+ History Month is important.

Congratulations to Tahlia D A and Mary V both of 7SSN who performed last Sunday at Circuit Kingston! Tahlia’s band, ‘The Lost Chords’, all attend Twickenham’s School Of Rock and played the songs ‘Seven Nation Army’, ‘I Love Rock And Roll’, ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’ and ‘Let It Be’. Year 8

This week have celebrated our wonderful Year 8 football team who beat Richmond Park Academy 4-2 on Friday to become Borough champions! A massive well done for all their hard work and effort.

On Tuesday we had an assembly where our Year 9s performed their ‘Poetry by Heart’ pieces that they had been working on and rehearsing for weeks.

They were extremely impressive and I hope the year group feel inspired to do the same next year after seeing their performances.

This week our top ePraise point winners are Bareen J (PFO), followed by Elena B (FLY) and then Marianne M (PFO). The top tutor group was PCO. Can anyone knock them off the top spot before the half term holidays?

Next week is the last week of this half term and on Monday all of Year 8 and their tutors are off to Kingston theatre. Please make sure all payments and permission slips have been returned so everyone has a chance to go.

Have a good weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

We have had another busy week this week at Waldegrave with Year 9 focused on their GCSE options. Students need to think carefully about the subjects they will choose to study in Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) and as such, we follow an extensive programme to support them in their decision making. As part of the preparations for Options, this week Year 9 attended an assembly led by our Assistant Headteacher, Mr Sharp who introduced the Options process to them and shared information about the various subjects on other pathways and a timeline which will apply for this academic year.

Next Wednesday evening, we look forward to welcoming you into Waldegrave for our Year 9 Options Evening presentation for parents and carers. This will be an opportunity for you to hear all about what we have on each other and share our timeline and other key information with you.

In form time this term we are completing activities which develop resilience and this week’s activity was a Budget Holiday Planner challenge. Students were given a fictional, limited budget to plan a week-long holiday, forcing them to prioritise, research free local activities, and manage trade-offs between activities and costs. This builds problem-solving skills and financial literacy.

Our top three epraise forms this week are as follows – 9PIR with 1,557, followed by 9FDR on 1,239, and 9SHU at 1,185 – well done everyone! Our top 3 individual leaders deserve a special mention; Ingrid O’S (9EBH), Olivia B (9EBH) and Angela P (9PIR) – Great work!

Congratulations to Ela U (9SHU) who wrote a play that won a competition hosted by Complicite (drama company), her play is now in the process of being made into an audio play. This is a wonderful achievement we are very proud of you – very well done! We love to hear about and celebrate our students’ achievements outside of school. Please be sure to let us know of anything your child has been involved with that deserves recognition.

Waldegrave Music Department are hosting the Leavers Live Lounge next Thursday from 6.30pm, with a number of students taking part, particularly from Years 11 and 13. The line up will be an eclectic mix of student led performances accompanied by our student and staff house band. Entry is free but donations to support the Performing Arts Fund will be gratefully received.

The Big and ever so popular Waldegrave Bake Off is back and Year 9 Bake Off Competition will take place on 9th March – we are looking forward to seeing and hopefully tasting the wonderful culinary skills our year 9 have to offer.

A reminder that students have been asked to ensure that they are wearing lanyards at all times whilst on school premises. If any have been mislaid new ones can be purchased via Parent Pay. Year 9 have been reminded that our uniform standards are expected to remain high and this includes keeping their lanyard neat and tidy and legible.

Thank you for your support and I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

Year 10

On Sunday 31 January, Mariya A (10FCO) and Eva H (10PWA), competed alongside 16 other young people in the Rotary Young Chef Competition District Final at South Thames College in Morden. They were up against some very stiff competition but I am very proud to say that Mariya was awarded second place and Eva came in at fourth. They did so well, especially considering the top placed competitor is the son of a very successful Italian restaurant in Fulham! I know this competition has been a fantastic experience for everyone in Year 10 who took part last term. Mariya will now go forward to the Cluster Final due to be held on 8 March, while Eva is the first reserve in the event of anyone dropping out. Many congratulations to them both.

This week we have been focusing on Media Literacy as part of our enrichment during tutor time. Having spoken to some of our students I know that they are really enjoying these sessions. The aim is to help foster the ability to: decode media messages, including the systems in which they exist; assess the influence of those messages on our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, perceptions, beliefs, health, and on our society; and use and create media to provide information, send a message, or tell one’s own story in a way that is thoughtful, conscientious, safe, and responsible. For example this week the focus was mis- and dis-information.

Top Epraise:
1. 10POR
2. 10FCO
3. 10EMU

Looking ahead we want our students to be ensuring that they are starting to build good habits with revision . We recommend short interval revision over cramming. Some support can be found here:
https://senecalearning.com/en-GB/
https://www.gcsepod.com/ and
to support building a revision timetable here we recommend http://getrevising.co.uk/

Have a great weekend

Year 11

This week Year 11 students completed a survey on their post-16 options so that we can see where they have applied to. It was great to see so many students applying to a real variety of courses, including A levels, T levels and also apprenticeships. If students are still unsure as to what to do after they leave school they can speak to myself or their form tutor. We would be happy to offer them some more support with this.

This Wednesday our Year 11 Art students visited the Tate Britain Gallery. It was a very inspiring trip looking at incredible artworks and gathering information for their exam theme entitled ‘Found’.

After running the behaviour report this week it was wonderful to see so many students on zero behaviour points. In the run up to the mocks, we do want to ensure that students are prioritising their learning and trying their best in school. Keep up the good work!!

All communication about the upcoming mocks has gone out to parents/guardians. If you or your child has any questions on this do contact the school or encourage your child to talk to their subject tutors.

If you want to contact any of your child’s subject teachers you can do this by emailing the KS4 hub and putting ‘for the ATT of’ and the subject teachers name into the subject heading of the email. They will then get back to you as soon as possible.

During the half term break Orlean’s Gallery is hosting a Creative Careers Day on Sunday 22 February. Book your free tickets to attend artist led workshops on video game design, alternative hip-hop and writing, film making, art and AI, painting and more. Read more and book tickets here.

Have a lovely weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

Next week is Children’s Mental Health Week and the theme for 2026 is ‘This is My Place’, encouraging young people and children to use their support systems to help feel like they belong.

Our mental health flourishes when we feel connected and valued. When children and young people have a strong sense of belonging, they:
Feel more confident to be themselves and try new things.
Develop resilience to cope with challenges and setbacks.
Build stronger relationships and communication skills.
Experience less anxiety and loneliness.
Have better self-esteem and understand their own worth.
Feel motivated to contribute positively to their communities.

When we don’t feel like we belong, it can leave us feeling isolated, anxious, or like we need to hide parts of ourselves to fit in. That’s why nurturing belonging is so crucial for every child’s mental health and wellbeing.

Young minds have resources and advice for young people who may be feeling alone, lonely or misunderstood. Social media is a great way to connect with friends, stay informed and follow trends but it can also make you feel more lonely. See here for Young Minds guide to social media and mental health.

Sports Fixtures

Last Friday our Year 7/8 football team played away at Richmond Park Academy. They showed some fancy footwork and came away with a 4-2 win, securing their position at Borough champions!

On Monday our indoor cricketers played in a tournament at Turing House. They had a lot of fun testing their skills and are also looking forward to the outdoor season when the weather brightens up.

Our Year 7 basketball team was also playing this week, this time against St Richard Reynolds. Their match on Tuesday resulted in another win for their great teamwork, with a final score of 38-18.

Finally we have a team of 20 pupils swimming today at the Richmond Schools Sports Partnership gala at Lady Eleanor Holles School. We are sending them good vibes and will update you with their results next week.

Well done to all the students who have been training, playing or working hard this week – keep it up!
