Headteacher's Message

Despite being so close to the end of term there is no slowing down at Waldegrave and we have had another very busy week of sport, trips, Christmas activities and performances! And this all followed a wonderful carol service last Friday and the weekend’s Christmas Tree Sale – which raised over £700 for the school. Thank you to everyone who bought a tree!

The week kicked off with our basketball squad attending professional training at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. ‘Her Time to Play’ is dedicated to empowering girls and women by offering on-court basketball training sessions, female-led coaching, and opportunities to connect and collaborate through the game of basketball. The aim of this session was to build excitement and support the team ahead of events they will take part in later this school year.

Our Year 11s have visited Hounslow Mosque this week to support learning about Islam as part of the R.E. GCSE curriculum. It was a very interesting trip where they learned about the different aspects of the muslim faith, how the mosque supports the community as well as taking a tour inside the mosque.

On Tuesday Year 13 Literature students attended the Poems of the Decade conference in London hearing from four renowned poets who read and discussed their work as well as delving into the ideas, construction and impact of some of the poems studied at A level.

Our Maths department got into the festive spirit on Tuesday with a Christ-maths quiz for our Year 8 pupils. They had to test their maths mastery as well as their Christmas knowledge to come out on top.

Wednesday was a bumper day for trips in Year 13, our German students headed to the British Film Institute while those studying Economics went to the Bank of England. The BFI hosted pupils for an A Level study day focusing on the changes in East Germany in 1989, helping students to expand their vocabulary and improve their critical film analysis skills by exploring key themes and styles in contemporary German cinema. Economics students visited the Bank of England museum, listened to a talk from one of the bank’s employees and then after lunch went on a fascinating walking tour of the City of London.

We also held our parent consultation meeting with Year 11 on Wednesday. It was great to see so many parents attending following on from the mock exams.

We finally got to our Winter Festival on Thursday evening, which seems to have come around very quickly since last year. It was a spectacular event with plenty of Christmas classics and the magic of the season even brought us some snow!

Next week is our final week of term with plenty of festive activities taking place before we break up for the holidays on Friday 19 at 12.30pm.  On Monday Waldegrave will be celebrating Christmas Jumper Day. We are asking pupils to wear a Christmas Jumper with their usual school uniform in aid of Save the Children. If your child does not have a Christmas jumper already they may decorate their school jumper or a jumper of their choice with tinsel, Christmas decorations or a home-made Christmas-themed badge.

We also have our Christmas lunches on Monday for Key Stage 3 and Tuesday for Key Stage 4 and 5. For those who do not have a ticket for the Christmas lunch, the canteen will be selling other lunch items at break time only on both the 15 and 16 December.

Our Year 10s will be treated once again to the fantastic Globe Players on Tuesday, this time with their curriculum set play, A Christmas Carol. And on Thursday students will go carolling at the Bentall Centre in Kingston to share some Christmas spirit.

This is the final parental newsletter for the Autumn Term, so I wish you and all your families a joyful break whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah or just having a well deserved rest after a long term!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

Lots has been going on in the life of Year 7 with plans for an enjoyable end of term. Well done to the Year 7 Choir members for their lovely performance in the Carol concert last Friday. They entertained me on the walk to the church with a rendition of Christmas songs.

Students continued to be very busy in lessons this week and earned those all important Epraise! They have been taking part in the tutor time kindness advent challenge and supporting each other so well. Congratulations go to Isabel 7PCL who has volunteered to be in charge of the kindness calendar and has been doing a fantastic job on sharing with the form the kindness challenge that has been set each day.

We have also been doing activities following on from antibullying week to re-inforce the all important message of thinking about how we treat each other and reflecting on how you can support a friend.

Aden in 7PCL talked eloquently about her achievements in volleyball in Show and Tell. Her talk was lots of fun as she even had the whole form up on their feet engaged in a warm up!

Well done to Hannah W, 7FSM, for her winning entry into Mrs Croucher’s Library competition for the best book mark designs. Hannah’s pink design is really striking. She will receive a £10 voucher.

I will not be sharing individual & form positions this week and we will announce the termly winners during our first celebration assembly next week.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Pink Day earlier in the term, we have received thank you letters from the charities we supported. We raised £468 in total for Coppafeel! and Cancer Research.

We have arrived at the last week of term to look forward to. On Monday Year 7 need to remember their Christmas jumpers to help raise money for Save the Children. Donations can be made via ParentPay. Please note this is not a non-uniform day and usual uniform rules will apply. Pupils may replace their blue jumper with a Christmas themed one – please do not buy new, pupils without a Christmas jumper can upcycle any jumper they have at home with tinsel, decorations or a Christmas badge.

Monday is also Christmas lunch for Year 7 and the rest of Key Stage 3. This will be the only hot food being served at lunch for those with a pre-purchased ticket. Those wanting to buy other lunch food at school on Monday and Tuesday must buy this at break.

Some tutor groups are celebrating by holding a secret santa event during tutor time, please do not forget your gift!

Then on Friday students will watch the Infamous Staff Panto, and sight not to be missed for sure. Please remember we have an early finish on Friday with dismissal at 12.30pm.

Finally I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful winter break. Year 7 have made a fantastic start to their school career here at Waldegrave and they definitely deserve this well earned rest.

Best wishes from us all for the festive period and a Happy New Year!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week we held our Celebration Assembly where we celebrated the achievements of students throughout the year. Each department chose three students who best represented the three Waldegrave values of Enjoy, Achieve, Empower. There were also awards for top Epraise points (individually and by tutor group), top attendance by form and we celebrated other personal achievements in music and sport. It was a lovely morning.

We are very proud of the four Year 8 students who were selected to attend national basketball coaching this week – well done Tabby, Shaleen, Pamela and Esme. I heard it was a lot of fun!

Well done to Ava S, 8PCO, for her winning entry into Mrs Croucher’s Library competition for the best book mark designs. Ava’s colourful design is really beautiful. She will receive a £10 voucher.

Mid week the year group split into half to take on the Monster Maths Quiz House competition. Teams competed for the Maths Quiz Trophy presented by our very own Mr Goulbourne,
Deputy Head and Maths teacher. Tested on their maths knowledge and seasonal mastery the overall winners were Franklin house with 352 points. They were followed by Seacole in second place with 299 points, Pankhurst in third with 290 and Eliot in fourth with 274 points. The winning teams on each day were:
Tuesday: The Kristmas Kiwis representing Eliot House (on tiebreaker) closely followed by Pankhurst teams Christmas Evel and The Gingerbread Geniuses both scoring 29 points.
Wednesday: Franklin House’s team, Very Christmassy name, achieved the top score of 36 points followed by another Franklin team, Thirty with 34 points.

Very well done to everyone for their mathematical efforts!

Yesterday evening we all enjoyed getting into the seasonal spirit with Waldegrave’s Winter Festival put on by our fantastic Performing Arts Department. I’m sure everyone who attended will agree it was another triumph and a lot of fun! Well done to all of Year 8 who took part.

A reminder that Monday 15 December is our annual Christmas Jumper day. Please be aware this is not a non-school uniform day, all normal uniform rules apply – the students can just opt for swapping their blue jumper for a festive one for the day. Donations for Save the Children via ParentPay please.

Also to note that we are doing KS3 Christmas lunches on Monday (KS4 get their turn on Tuesday) which will be available at lunchtime with a pre-purchased ticket. No other food will be available at lunch time, so those wanting to buy lunch will need to do so at break time on both Monday and Tuesday.

Please join me in congratulating our students who have completed a wonderful first term of Year 8 and we wish you all the very best Christmas break and look forward to seeing you all back refreshed in the New Year.

Best wishes from us all for the festive period and a Happy New Year!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

Last Friday, a number of Year 9 students took part in the Carol Service at St. Augustine’s Church. The students singing was uplifting and the congregation really enjoyed joining in the festive singing. Well done to all who took part, whether as a soloist, musician or member of the choir.

Yesterday evening we all enjoyed getting into the seasonal spirit with Waldegrave’s Winter Festival put on by our fantastic Performing Arts Department. I’m sure everyone who attended will agree it was another triumph and a lot of fun! Well done to all of Year 9 who took part.

Well done to Zoe N, 9SHU, for her winning entry into Mrs Croucher’s Library competition for the best book mark designs. Zoe’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory design is really fun. She will receive a £10 voucher.

This morning we enjoyed our Celebration Assembly where we were able to celebrate the excellent start our wonderful Year 9 students have made at school this term. Students were celebrated in departments and their tutor groups for their successes. A number of students won awards based around our three key principles at Waldegrave – Enjoy, Achieve and Empower. The assembly also allowed us the chance to also applaud the students that took part in show production, musical concerts and our sporting stars.

Our Epraise results were also collated and we were able to see that Pankhurst House were the overall Epraise champions this term. Elliot, Franklin and Seacole followed respectively. A special mention should go out to 9PIR for topping the table so convincingly for this term with 1116 points ahead of 9 SHU with 833 points and 9FDR 825 points!

We have much to look forward to as we enter into the final week as students from across the school will celebrate Christmas Jumper Day on Monday in aid of Save the Children. This is not a non-uniform day but students may replace their blue jumper with a Christmas themed one. Please don’t buy new, you can upcycle with some tinsel, decorations or a Christmas badge. Donations can be made via ParentPay.

Our festive lunch will also take place on Monday 15 December for those with a pre-purchased ticket, I am sure there will be much merriment on display in the canteen! No other food will be available at lunch time, so those wanting to buy lunch will need to do so at break time on both Monday and Tuesday.

On the last day of term we can look forward to the school pantomime. School will finish on Friday 19th December at 12.30pm, with a return on Monday 5th January.

I am immensely proud of all of the students in Year 9 and I look forward to welcoming them back into school next term! I hope the upcoming holidays provide all our students and families with an enjoyable and restful break.

Best wishes from us all for the festive period and a Happy New Year!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

Following last Friday’s lovely Carol Service at St Augustine’s Church in Whitton we are well on the way to the end of term. Last night we had the winter festival which was another brilliant event from our Performing Arts Department. Thank you to all the Year 10s involved in both these events. They have really got everyone across the school into the festive spirit.

On Wednesday this week we held our end of term Celebrations Assembly. Students were celebrated by departments and their tutor groups for their successes. A number of students won awards based around our three key principles at Waldegrave – Enjoy, Achieve and Empower. The assembly also allowed us the chance to also applaud the students that took part in show production, musical concerts and our sporting stars. Congratulations to everyone who received a prize and to all of Year 10 for such a positive first term!

Well done to Hadia H, 10SAN, for her winning entry into Mrs Croucher’s Library competition for the best book mark designs. Hadia’s spooky design is really striking. She will receive a £10 voucher.

Congratulations to 10POR and 10FCO for tying on the most Epraise points achieved this week. Well done!

Next Monday is Christmas Jumper Day at Waldegrave. We are encouraging students to ‘upcycle’ their current jumpers to make them festive, rather than buying a new one. Students should still come into school in their uniform, but they can wear a Christmas jumper instead of their normal Waldegrave sweatshirt. Donations can be made via ParentPay in support of Save the Children.

Also to note that we are doing Christmas lunches on Monday (KS3) and Tuesday (KS4 & 5) which will be available at lunchtime with a pre-purchased ticket. No other food will be available at lunch time, so those wanting to buy lunch will need to do so at break time on both Monday and Tuesday.

Best wishes from us all for the festive period and a Happy New Year!

Year 11

We are now into our final week of the Christmas term. Last night we had the winter festival which was another brilliant event from our Performing Arts Department and it was wonderful to see so many Year 11s involved.

Year 11 went on a RE trip this week to a local mosque to learn more about Islam and their religious practices. Year 11 were very respectful and asked thoughtful questions.

We held the Year 11 parents evening on Wednesday. Hopefully students and parents found this informative and have taken on board the advice given to help them improve in preparation for the next set of mock exams in February.

Congratulations to 11PGU for getting the most Epraise points this week.

Health & Wellbeing

Christmas doesn’t switch on with a date. It creeps in with wonder, excitement and that quiet feeling that something special is coming. Christmas jumper days, themed activities in school, performances and tinsel everywhere you look! For many of us, the Christmas holidays can be a time of great excitement and joy, where we can relax and reset after the hard work of the autumn term. You won’t find it on a curriculum, but it’s one of the best lessons there is: Christmas magic exists, hope for the new year matters, and connection with family and friends is everything.

However, for others (especially parents!) it can feel busier and more stressful than the rest of the year. The Art of Brilliance Blog suggests these top tips for combating the stresses of the festive season:

Don’t overcommit yourself. Saying yes to everything can end with us pleasing no one. Don’t find yourself burnt out before Christmas Day, be selective in what you say yes to.
Take a breath. When all the family is spending a lot of time together and expectations are high, tensions can rise. Take a breath. Sometimes the best thing to do is keep your thoughts to yourself and let it go.
Find space within the busyness. Christmas is full on, with so many people to see it can be hard to find some ‘me’ time. Find the moments of stillness in the day-to-day to take a breath from the chaos and relax.

The mental health charity Mind has some more in depth advice on a range of Christmas related topics, including coping with money worries, looking after yourself, and managing relationships. You can find their advice here.

For families who have experienced bereavement, Christmas can be especially hard. Cruse Bereavement Support have some practical tips for managing grief over the festive season, including finding different ways of celebrating and remembering. They also offer a free helpline: 0808 808 1677.
