Headteacher's Message

After over 80 hours of rehearsal our wonderful Performing Arts team’s staging of ‘My Fair Lady’ took place this week. During the course of six shows the school welcomed an audience of over thousand members for this sold out event, even welcoming pupils from local primaries for the matinee performances. As ever, the show was a triumph! Having heard the songs ringing through the corridors and seeing students in their Edwardian costumes, I could not wait to see the show and I was not disappointed. Not only were the performers superb, but the imaginative staging and costumes ensured we were all totally immersed in Edwardian London. A huge congratulations to everyone involved!

The drama didn’t stop there. On Thursday afternoon Year 11 Drama students visited Richmond Theatre to see a performance of The Woman in Black as part of their GCSE studies. It was another excellent performance that had students jumping out of their seats!

Meanwhile, our GCSE Art students completed their mock exam on Tuesday and Wednesday. The theme for the exam was ‘Power’ and it was wonderful to see all the different ways students had explored this through their art.
Yesterday our Year 12 Psychology students visited the Emmanuel Centre in Westminster for the Psychology in Action A level conference. Students had the opportunity to learn from experts speakers, with sessions exploring themes including ‘How to build a healthy brain’ and ‘Finding Focus in a Frantic World.’ Today our A level Art students have taken part in the Art in Action conference. Speakers at this event included Magnum photographer Martin Parr and Turner Prize winner, Rachel Whitbread.

Well done to our athletes who took part in the Cross Country Borough Championships last Friday, on what was a beautiful sunny, if cold, day. The pupils limbered up and then set off on a 3.3km race against peers from every school in the Richmond Borough. Teachers placed themselves strategically along the course cheering them on to the finish. The teams placed well, taking fourth for Years 8/9 and 10/11 and fifth place for Year 7. We are incredibly proud! For more about this event and all our matches over the past week see the Sports Fixtures section of the newsletter.

Next Friday the Choir will be taking part in the annual Carol Service, from 6pm at St Augustine’s in Whitton, which is sure to be a wonderful event and all families are invited to attend. An excellent way to start the festive season! Don’t forget Friends of Waldegrave have a Christmas tree sale at school next weekend. This is a great way for families to support the school as 25% of each sale will go towards enhancing the educational opportunities available to all students. You can preorder your tree via Parentpay for collection at school on Saturday 6 December.

This weekend the Black Friday sales take place and many of you will be getting stuck into Christmas shopping. Please remember you can support the school at no cost to you by signing up to Easyfundraising. Over 8,000 retailers support easyfundraising, many of the shops you already use, giving a small donation to the charity of your choice every time you shop. These small donations soon add up — and cost you nothing! Sign up to Easyfundraising here.

Lastly, many of our students and families have close connections to Hong Kong and we appreciate that the news of the recent devastating fire may be particularly distressing for some within our school community. We would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to anyone affected. Please do not hesitate to contact school if you feel your child needs any additional support.

Have a lovely weekend!

Congratulations to the Year 7/8 Football team who have qualified for the RSSP league final against Richmond Park Academy. This match will hopefully take place before the end of term.

The top of the student Epraise leaderboard is still a very close call! In 1st place it’s Alice J 7FBO, equal 2nd Jemima P 7SSN & Annabelle H 7PRE and in 3rd Ellen B 7PRE.

The battle at the top of the table for the tutor group leaderboard is equally as tightly contested with 7PRE in 1st place, 7FSM in 2nd and 7FBO 3rd.

Next week some Year 7 students will be taking part in a Student Parliament visit to the Houses of Parliament with Mr Goulbourne. They might have the opportunity to meet our MP so they are busy planning what questions to ask.

Next Friday the Choir will be taking part in the annual Carol Service, from 6pm at St Augustine’s in Whitton, which is sure to be a wonderful event and all families are invited to attend.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week the students have been very busy with the wonderful school production of My Fair Lady. The students performed wonderfully not only to staff but to visiting primary schools as well. In food and nutrition lessons this week Year 8 got stuck into making cheese straws and they looked very impressive. Hopefully those students will be able to go home and make them for their families over the Christmas break.

Very well done to the Year 8 Basketball team who beat the team from Grey Court School very thoroughly. The students played exceptionally well and I was very impressed with their talents. See the full sports round up in the Sports Fixtures section below. The top Epraise point winners this week are Prisca C from ESU, Darina Y from SDE and Alex A from SDE. Well done to them and everyone who has been earning Epraise points this week.

Next week as we start the month of December we will start preparing for the Christmas season with themed topics in assemblies and tutor time activities. On Monday several lucky students from the School Parliament are visiting the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, the tour starts at 9 so the students will be up early.

Have a great weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

It has been a busy week with lots going on both in and outside of lessons. We have had the My Fair Lady Showcase and what a brilliant spectacle it was! With students acting, dancing, singing and assisting behind the scenes all doing an incredible job. I have been so impressed with the talent and dedication exhibited from all of the students who have had some involvement in the production. It was absolutely superb!

Last week Year 8 teamed up with Year 9 to compete in the Richmond Schools Cross Country Championships which took place at Bushy Park. I was delighted to be able to support the team and cheer them on around the course on what was a cold but beautifully sunny day. Our team finished a commendable 4th place overall which is a fantastic achievement – Well done team!

Rugby sessions which are run by Richmond Rugby Club on Wednesdays after school are proving very popular with Year 9s and this has been great to see – there are still places available, speak to the PE team if your child is keen to have a go – this is a great place to develop determination and teamwork skills and also try something new.

Congratulations to Adrienna W (9PIR) who recently sat her Grade 6 piano exam at the ABRSM London Centre, and we are delighted to share that she was awarded a Distinction. This is a wonderful achievement and we are incredibly proud of the hard work and commitment she has shown alongside her school studies – Well done!

Our top three Epraise forms this week are as follows – 9PIR with 951 points, 9EDA 667 points, 9PAH with 658 points – keep up the great work! Well done to all of our students who are demonstrating the enjoy, achieve and empower aspects of school life.

As the temperatures have dropped this week, please remind your children to wear warm coats to school and take extra care. A reminder that students have been asked to ensure that they are wearing lanyards at all times whilst on school premises.

Thank you for your continued support – Have a great weekend!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

What a busy week we have had for Year 10. I was lucky enough to see the fantastic My Fair Lady School Production on Tuesday evening and I was incredibly proud of all our students in Year 10 who took part – a huge well done to them all! The songs, costumes and acting were first class and it was a fantastic representation of the Waldegrave ethos ‘Enjoy, Achieve and Empower’.

We also had a great basketball fixture against Christ’s School on Monday, this was a home game and clearly our team relished the advantage as they ended with a 57-22 win! Read the full round up of this week’s matches in our Sports Fixtures section.

Congratulations to Evelyn B, 10EMU who has received distinction in her ABRSM grade 6 clarinet exam. This is a great achievement!

Well done to Jessica S, 10SAN; Dakshina AP, 10PWA and Hannah A, 10EFR who performed as part of the 2nd Teddington Scout band on Tuesday evening at the Greater London South West Jack Petchey Awards in Chessington. They performed ‘High & Dry’ by Radiohead, ‘Clint Eastwood’ by Gorillaz and ‘Valerie’ by The Zutons, to an audience of 400. Dakshina performed vocals, Hannah, the viola and Jessica alternated between violin, bass guitar and rap!

This week our Epraise leaderboard is as follows:
1. 10POR
2. 10FCO
3.10EMU

Our top Epraise individual totals are awarded for the following students: Viktoriia M, Anastasiia M, Maisy N, Josie M and Izzy L-M.

Huge congratulations to all students who are earn Epraise by being supportive, kind and hardworking members of the school community.

During form time this week, students were asked to write ‘Kindness cards’ to members of our school. These could be for teachers, support staff, premises team or canteen staff. It has been wonderful to read all of the lovely messages and I have no doubt that the recipients will thoroughly enjoy reading them as well.

Next Thursday, Ms Lee-Lewis has organised another talk as part of her ‘Working Lunch’ series. Mr Dodd, who is a Chief Financial Officer, will speak to pupils about his career journey, day-to-day life as a chief finance officer, how he managed to secure this role, as well as what steps students need to take to have a career in finance. The talk is open to all pupils and will take place in the School Hall during the lunch break.

I hope you have a fabulous weekend.

Mrs O Mortimer

Year 11

It has been a busy time for Year 11! This week Art students had their mocks on Tuesday and Wednesday. All students worked incredibly hard on this, and it was great to see their dedication and maturity over these two days. They should all feel very proud of themselves.

Congratulations to all the students who took part in My Fair Lady this week! The show was absolutely fantastic and it was great to see some Year 11 students take leading roles. I so enjoyed watching it as did everyone else. Thank you everyone for your hard work!

Well done to Emeline G, 11STH, who spoke on a panel at a University College London Hospitals conference this week. She was raising awareness about functional neurological disorder and how to support people struggling with it. We heard she spoke with great confidence and we are really proud of her for taking part.

Earlier this month Elise B, 11STH, competed as part of Team Richmond at the London Youth Games Cross Country at Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath. The girls’ team finished 2nd overall which is a fantastic achievement. We are very proud of her!

Year 11 parents evening is coming up in December. Please remember to book appointments with your child’s teachers, the School Cloud link to book is in the letter sent last week, 20 November.

As the weather has turned cooler students are now wearing extra layers, please can you remind your child that these need to be put away into a locker when they arrive at school. Lockers and locker keys can be purchased via Parentpay if your child does not have one/has lost the key.

Wishing you an enjoyable weekend,

Health & Wellbeing

The annual United Nations campaign, 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-based Violence, started on Tuesday and is the theme of assemblies for the next two weeks. This year the theme is End Digital Violence and focuses on trying to ensure the online environment is safer for women and girls.

Digital violence is spreading at alarming speed, fueled by artificial intelligence, anonymity, and the absence of effective laws and accountability. It now spans every corner of the Internet – from online harassment and cyberstalking to doxing, non-consensual image sharing, deepfakes, and disinformation – weaponized to silence, shame, and intimidate women and girls.

The annual Girlguiding ‘Girls’ Attitudes Survey’ found that girls are used to taking measures to stay safe online, with 92% of girls and young women aged 11-21 saying they’ve taken at least one action to enhance their safety. The majority (54%) block people they don’t know offline, and about half (48%) limit who can see their posts online. 2 in 5 girls and young women aged 11-21 (41%) have a private account alongside a public account. Once again, girls feel they have to limit themselves and what they do to stay safe, with 35% saying they avoid talking or posting about certain subjects online. 29% say they avoid using certain apps and platforms to protect themselves. A further 1 in 3 girls avoid sharing photos of their face and 15% turn off or disable comments on their posts. This short video, which is being shared with students in assemblies, has 7 top tips we can all help end digital violence against women and girls.

There are a number of local events taking place, as part of 16 Days of Activism, which are open to members of the community, including active bystander training. You can find out more about them on the Richmond Council website. There is also a free on demand e-learning course for anyone who wants to learn how to be an active bystander safely.

Sports Fixtures

Last Friday in the chilly sunshine nineteen of our pupils headed to Bushy Park to take part in the Cross Country Borough Championships. We are very proud to report that the Year 7 team placed fifth, the Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 teams both placed fourth. Well done to all of them for their hard work!
This week our Year 10 Basketball Team played a home game facing Christ’s School. The team played brilliantly in their familiar surroundings, winning 57-22. They were ecstatic about the score and Rosie O was named the player’s player of the match.

Our Sixth Form students also had matches this week. Firstly, on Monday our U18 Netball Team played their first away league fixture where we saw nine determined Y12–13 players head to Turing House and return with a 27–4 win! Aggie D (Y12) shone as Goal Shooter and was named Player of the Match by Turing. With players stepping into unfamiliar positions (special shout-outs to Freya B and Yasmin B for fearless Goal Attack cameos), the team even swapped all their bibs in the final quarter as a sporting gesture. A brilliant performance all round and a great start to the campaign. Well done!

Then on Tuesday the U18 Football tournament took place. Our team lost 3–1 at home to Teddington, nonetheless there was plenty to smile about. Sam C opened the scoring with a confident finish, and the team showed flashes of sharp attacking play throughout. Controlling the midfield proved trickier, and a few defensive scrambles tipped the result the wrong way, but lots of promise and plenty to build on for the next fixture. Well done for their efforts and to Sam C for scoring!
