Headteacher's Message

This final week of the half term has been a busy one. We kicked off on Monday with a trip to the Rose Theatre in Kingston for our Year 8’s who went to watch ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’. This play, based on the bestselling novel by Onjali Q. Rauf is a thought provoking look at the refugee experience from the perspective of a young boy and his classmates.

This week Waldegrave held a Higher Education Evening for our Year 12 pupils, providing an overview of the university application process and giving advice on the next steps for students. and the Options Information Evening for our Year 9s making decisions about GCSE choices.

Last night the music department hosted the Leavers’ Live Lounge, a music event featuring an eclectic range of student performances. It was a fantastic event featuring some spectacular talent and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

Today we have ended the week with Year 9 and 10 having a discussion with the Chair of the local humanist group about what they believe and think about ethical issues linked to the Religious Studies GCSE; such as marriage, gender discrimination, abortion and euthanasia. The students had a lot to talk about and it was a stimulating discussion.

Finally some very lucky Year 10 pupils have been working on a special project in school today with photography professionals from the National Portrait Gallery. These pupils have been taking portrait shots of staff from across the school throughout the day – read more about this project on our website.

While the mock exams start in earnest after the half-term break some of the language orals, PE moderation and music performances have already taken place. Well done to all those who have undertaken these exams in a sensible and calm manner. A lot of revision and preparation has already taken place which puts all those taking mocks after half-term in a great place to face these exams.

I wish everyone a restful break after a very busy start to 2026, for those revising please remember to balance this out with plenty of rest breaks too! We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday 24 February after the staff inset day on the Monday.

Have a lovely half-term break,

Ms E Tongue

Year Group Messages

Year 12

We hope that all parents/carers who attended the higher education evening found it helpful. If you were unable to attend, the slides have been posted on the school website. If you have any questions, please send them in to sixthform@waldegravesch.org

Some of our year 12 students were involved in the music live lounge on Thursday evening. It was so lovely to see how talented our students are and see such an eclectic mix of performances.

Three of our year 12 students have earned a place in the ‘Quarter-Finals’ of the Sovereign Minds Spear Oratory Prize. Out of more than 2000 applicants, they are three of 100 speakers moving forward, which is a truly remarkable achievement.

They will be taking part in the quarter finals on Saturday 14th February 2026 at The Naval and Military Club in St James Square. We wish them the best of luck!

A reminder that tutor time is compulsory for all students. Students must be in their form rooms at 8.35 ready for tutor time to begin. Students must also make sure that they are wearing their lanyards around the school site and are signing in and out when entering and leaving the school premises.

A reminder that the Oxbridge Evening is scheduled to take place from 5-6pm on Tuesday 24 February in the Sixth Form study base. Students are also encouraged to attend. There is no need to book tickets for this event. Visitors will be asked to sign in on arrival.

Please note during the half term break Orlean’s Gallery is hosting a Creative Careers day on Sunday 22 February. Book your free tickets to attend artist led workshops on video game design, alternative hip-hop and writing, film making, art and AI, painting and more. Read more and book tickets here.

Have a lovely half term.

Year 13

Year 13 students have continued to work hard this week in preparation for their mock exams. We have now started the cycle with all MFL oral exams completed as of today. I am absolutely certain that they have all found this process, albeit a bit stressful, extremely helpful.

Yesterday, the Waldegrave Music Department hosted the Leavers Live Lounge with a number of students taking part, particularly from Years 11 and 13. The line up was an eclectic mix of student who led performances accompanied by our student and staff house band. It was a fantastic event! Thank you to all attendees for the donations that have now been kindly received.

Today was the last tutor time Year 13 students were timetabled to attend. From the week commencing 9th March, i.e. after the mock exams have been completed, students will only need to come into school for their timetabled lessons. They are of course welcomed to come in at 8:30am should they wish to do so.

During the half term break Orlean’s Gallery is hosting a Creative Careers day on Sunday 22 February. Book your free tickets to attend artist led workshops on video game design, alternative hip-hop and writing, film making, art and AI, painting and more. Read more and book tickets here.

As a reminder, Monday 23 February is an INSET day for most pupils and staff, however students who are scheduled to sit a mock exam on this day still need to arrive promptly.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all students a lovely half-term break. As always, they need to ensure that they strike the correct balance between revision and some rest.

Have a wonderful half term!

Health & Wellbeing

This week is Children’s Mental Health Week and 10th February was also Safer Internet Day. We know that these two issues are often linked for our students, as they spend so much of their time online and are impacted by the experiences and interactions they have when online. The theme for Safer Internet Day this year is: Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.

We know that AI is a hot topic and that children are increasingly turning to AI, rather than traditional search engines, for information, for help with schoolwork and even for mental health support. Consequently, it’s important they have the skills and confidence to make safe choices when they are using smart technology. This Safer Internet Day we are exploring the impact of AI on all of our lives, looking at how AI can be used for good, and giving advice and guidance that empowers people to use AI safely and responsibly. Students have had the opportunity to discuss safe AI use in their tutor times or PDC lessons to mark Safer Internet Day.

The organisation Childnet has produced some really helpful resources for parents and carers, who are trying to navigate how to support their children to use this new technology safely. The information sheets attached include information on how and why young people are using generative AI, as well as AI and nude images. They also include conversation starters and tips about how to support your child if they are affected.

More information can be found at https://www.childnet.com/parents-and-carers/ and https://saferinternet.org.uk/guide-and-resource/parents-and-carers
