Headteacher's Message

This past weekend two of our Year 10 pupils, Mariya A and Eva H, competed in the Rotary Young Chef Competition District Final alongside 16 other hopefuls. I am very proud to say that our students both shined with Mariya taking second place and Eva coming in fourth. This is a wonderful achievement for them both. Apart from their success, this competition is a fantastic experience for everyone taking part and develops skills that will be with them for life. Good luck to Mariya who will now go forward to the Cluster Final due to be held on 8 March.

Reading matters at Waldegrave and this week we have launched a new eLibrary for all students to access electronic and audio books from their laptops or other devices. This is an additional exciting service that complements our fantastic Library area that has a wide range of physical books, from new reads to literary masterpieces, for students to access throughout their time at Waldegrave. The Sora eLibrary can be accessed from the quick links on our website or directly from the student’s chromebooks.

This Wednesday brought former Conservative MP (2010 – 2024) and Leader of the House of Commons (2022-2024), Penny Mordaunt to Waldegrave Sixth Form to speak to our politics students. She is best known for her notable role in the Coronation of King Charles III as the first female bearer of the Sword of State but she has held many ministerial positions from Secretary of State for International Development, Minister for Women and Equalities, Defence Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons. This was thrilling talk for our students who gained a real insight into Whitehall and a career in politics.

Today we have 20 students taking part in the Richmond Schools Sports Partnership swimming gala at Lady Eleanor Holles School. We wish them all luck and look forward to sharing the results next week.

Next week a number of Year 11 and 13 students will be performing at our Leavers Live Lounge, on Thursday evening from 6.30pm. The line up will be an eclectic mix of student led performances accompanied by our student and staff house band and is sure to be another fantastic night of music.

I wanted to share with our creatively inclined students that there is a fantastic opportunity to take part in a Creative Careers day at Orleans Gallery on Sunday 22 February (during half-term). This free event will include artist led workshops, panel discussions, networking and speed mentoring. There will be artists from sectors such as video game design, alternative hip-hop and writing, film making, art and AI, painting and more. It sounds like a great way to discover what a career in the arts could look like. Tickets for over 16s can be booked here.

Finally, the poor weather has led to an increase in traffic in the mornings in particular and I would ask that you be mindful of the rules of the road when dropping off your child. Please do not park or stop on the double yellow lines and zigzags outside the school so that children and other road users can see clearly when crossing the street. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Please note we have updated the behaviour, uniform, feedback and public assessment policies on our website this week and have emailed out the Parent, Carer and Visitor Code of Conduct this week. Your understanding and support of these policies will help maintain the strong relationship between our school and families, ensuring the Waldegrave community remains a welcoming place for all.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms E Tongue

Year Group Messages

Year 12

On Wednesday all of year 12 were lucky to receive a talk from Dame Penny Mordaunt during their enrichment session. All students found the session extremely interesting and there were some great questions asked towards the end.

A reminder that there will be a Year 12 Higher Education Evening from 5-6pm on Monday 9 February in the Main Hall. The event will provide an overview of the university application process, outlining the support the school will offer and giving advice on the next steps for students. A copy of the presentation will be posted on the school website the following day for those unable to attend.

In addition to this general briefing on the university application process, we also run a specialist programme for those students wishing to apply to Oxford or Cambridge and will be running a separate event for both students and parents/carers who are interested in pursuing this route. The Oxbridge Evening is scheduled to take place from 5-6pm on Tuesday 24 February in the Sixth Form study base. Students are also encouraged to attend.

We would advise that all parents / carers attend the Higher Education Evening and that those whose daughters / sons are intending to apply to Oxford or Cambridge also attend the Oxbridge Evening. There is no need to book tickets for either event. Visitors will be asked to sign in on arrival.

The slides used at the events will be posted on the school website for those who are unable to attend and the resources will also be posted on the Y12 Careers & Progression Google Classroom for students to access. Your daughter / son should already be a member of the Google Classroom but, if they are not, they may join using the class code 23j77kln.

Waldegrave Music Department are hosting the Leavers Live Lounge next Thursday from 6.30pm, with a number of students taking part, particularly from Years 11 and 13. The line up will be an eclectic mix of student led performances accompanied by our student and staff house band. Year 13

Year 13 students had yet another busy week, as they have all been tirelessly preparing for their mock exams. On Wednesday we were very fortunate to have had Dame Penny Mordaunt coming into school to talk to our Politics students. During her speech, she talked about the country today, traditions and why they matter. Dame Penny Mordaunt was the Conservative MP for Portsmouth North from 2010 to 2024 and held a number of ministerial positions including the Cabinet post of Secretary of State for Defence. It was such an inspiring talk!

The decisions for all students who have applied to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge have now come through. I am delighted to announce that five of our Year 13 students have received such offers, which is an incredible achievement. We have also had three offers to students to study Medicine and one for Veterinary science. Well done to these students and to everyone who has received a University offer. I am sure more will come through in the coming weeks.

Tilly A (13RPA) had her last Sea Cadets session this week, as she is about to turn 18 and can no longer be a Cadet. She was presented with a framed set of her badges, stripes and awards in a very memorable ceremony. Well done Tilly for your dedication to Sea Cadets.

Between Wednesday and Friday next week, all MFL students will take part in their mock oral exams. I wish them all the best of luck with their preparation and during these tests.

Waldegrave Music Department are hosting the Leavers Live Lounge next Thursday from 6.30pm, with a number of students taking part, particularly from Years 11 and 13. The line up will be an eclectic mix of student led performances accompanied by our student and staff house band. Entry is free but donations to support the Performing Arts Fund will be gratefully received.

During the half term break Orlean’s Gallery is hosting a Creative Careers day on Sunday 22 February. Book your free tickets to attend artist led workshops on video game design, alternative hip-hop and writing, film making, art and AI, painting and more. Read more and book tickets here.

Have a good weekend.

Health & Wellbeing

Next week is Children’s Mental Health Week and the theme for 2026 is ‘This is My Place’, encouraging young people and children to use their support systems to help feel like they belong.

Our mental health flourishes when we feel connected and valued. When children and young people have a strong sense of belonging, they:
Feel more confident to be themselves and try new things.
Develop resilience to cope with challenges and setbacks.
Build stronger relationships and communication skills.
Experience less anxiety and loneliness.
Have better self-esteem and understand their own worth.
Feel motivated to contribute positively to their communities.

When we don’t feel like we belong, it can leave us feeling isolated, anxious, or like we need to hide parts of ourselves to fit in. That’s why nurturing belonging is so crucial for every child’s mental health and wellbeing.

Young minds have resources and advice for young people who may be feeling alone, lonely or misunderstood. Social media is a great way to connect with friends, stay informed and follow trends but it can also make you feel more lonely. See here for Young Minds guide to social media and mental health.

Sports Fixtures

Last Friday our Year 7/8 football team played away at Richmond Park Academy. They showed some fancy footwork and came away with a 4-2 win, securing their position at Borough champions!

On Monday our indoor cricketers played in a tournament at Turing House. They had a lot of fun testing their skills and are also looking forward to the outdoor season when the weather brightens up.

Our Year 7 basketball team was also playing this week, this time against St Richard Reynolds. Their match on Tuesday resulted in another win for their great teamwork, with a final score of 38-18.

Finally we have a team of 20 pupils swimming today at the Richmond Schools Sports Partnership gala at Lady Eleanor Holles School. We are sending them good vibes and will update you with their results next week.

Well done to all the students who have been training, playing or working hard this week – keep it up!
