Head Teacher's Message

This week has been something of a whirlwind.  On Wednesday we had our first Drop Down Day of the academic year with lots of activities to enrich our students’ learning.  Our Year 7 had a wonderful day learning exploring employability skills before travelling into London to see a matinee performance of the Lion King. Year 8 students explored African culture taking part in a variety of workshops including dance, drumming, jewellery making and art. It was a careers focused day for our Year 9 students, with GCSE taster sessions and a careers speed networking event.  Our Year 10 students took part in a public speaking workshop, helping them all gain greater confidence in using their voice.  I am  looking forward to hearing the winning speeches in assembly after half term.

The day for our Year 11 students focused on helping them prepare both mentally and academically for their upcoming exams.  We were also delighted to welcome Michele Miller back to school to deliver her revision seminars for students alongside her evening presentation to parents. Our Year 12 students’ day focused on next steps with an introduction to university life as well as a careers speed networking session.

All in all it was a fabulous day and I have really enjoyed talking to students about what they found most interesting.  Thank you to all those who supported the event, particularly the parents who gave up their own time so generously to support our careers programme.

Last night we held our Sixth Form Open Evening welcoming hundreds of prospective students and families into school to talk to staff and students about sixth form options.  If you are interested in applying to our excellent Sixth Form further details can be found on our website here

Diwali begins at the start of next week and I know many of our families will be celebrating over the weekend. The London Borough of Richmond are hosting celebrations at Marble Hill for anyone who would like to join.  Details can be found here.

A former student, Kassia Unwin, is currently fundraising to cover the costs of an internship linked with her Marine Biology and Oceanography degree at the University of Plymouth. She will be joining Global Reef in Koh Tao, Thailand, to get hands-on experience in coral restoration, underwater surveying, and data analysis, while seeing first-hand how science and community come together to protect our world’s reefs. Please support her efforts by buying a raffle ticket and take your chance to win one of the amazing prizes she has gathered from local businesses in Richmond, Twickenham and Chiswick. Tickets are £10 each, all profits go toward Kassia’s internship, research, and training costs.

October is International Walk to School Month and I would like to thank all in the Waldegrave community who are choosing to walk to reduce traffic and pollution, whilst also improving their own health and wellbeing.  As the days get shorter, evidence shows that it is even more important for our wellbeing to try to get time outdoors.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms E Tongue

Year Group Messages

Year 7

I love to keep repeating myself when I get to say such positive things about Year 7 and how busy they have been again this week!

Well done to the Year 7/8 Football team who, following Monday’s performance, have won both of their opening matches in the RSSP league. Read more in the Sports Fixtures section further down in the newsletter.

On Wednesday the year group experienced their first Waldegrave Drop Down Day with a trip to see The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre. At the start of the school day we found out all about how the Lion King production is made possible. We watched a video “Getting Ready to Roar” which showed a day behind the scenes at the Lyceum theatre and explained everything that happens before a performance can take place.

The students reflected on their life experience and what skills they have developed, then included these as they wrote job applications to join the company of The Lion King! We then all set off to watch the production and what an amazing experience we all had. One student told Ms O’Brien that she’d never been on a train, into London or to the theatre before. Being able to offer these life experiences is priceless for all whether it’s a first time or a repeat trip.

It’s very, very close at the top of the student leaderboard for Epraise! Currently there is a three way tie for first place, well done to Jemima P 7SSN, Annie B 7PRE and Clarissa L 7PRE. Very close behind these 3 are; Annabelle H 7PRE, Sadie H 7PRE & Ellen B 7PRE. So 7PRE are definitely dominating the leaderboard status as they are also at the top of the Tutor group table. Year 7, keep doing everything you can to earn even more Epraise points!

We now have one more week until half term. Year 7 have started their secondary school career really well by engaging in so many school events and clubs, along with trying their best in lesson time. Well done to all of them.

Next week we are holding a Year 7 book swap event. It will take place in the hall on Wednesday 22nd October at 12.30pm. Year 7 are invited to bring in books that they don’t mind swapping.

Then to finish the half term; Year 7 Pink Day 2025 – Friday 24th October. Next Friday Year 7 are invited to wear anything pink to raise money and awareness for breast cancer charities; Cancer research and CoppaFeel!

They do not need to wear their school uniform on this day but can come to school wearing as much pink as possible! They do not need to buy anything new for this day – a pink ribbon, badge or homemade pink accessory on their outfit is fine if they do not have any pink clothing. Please note: Makeup, nail varnish and hair dye are not allowed and students will still need to wear their lanyards. We’ll end the half-term in a pink blaze!

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week we had an assembly celebrating the differences between us all and highlighting some of the difficulties that some neurodivergent students can face. All students listened attentively and were very respectful. We hope that this engenders understanding and reflection amongst the year group, with an emphasis on being kind to each other at this point in their school journey when friendships become more fluid and new relationships emerge.

Year 8 learned some African beats in their drumming sessions.

On Wednesday the whole school enjoyed our first Drop Down Day  which the students enjoyed celebrating African culture.

This week we have 8PCO topping the Epraise leaderboard with the top students being Emilia B from ESU, followed by Kayra U PCO and Molly O from FLY.

Next week we will hold our house assemblies and celebrate the achievements of students throughout the school and the wonderful charitable fund raising that has happened this term.

Remember that Friday 24 October is a full day finishing at our usual time of 2.25pm.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

Year 9 enjoyed a very insightful Drop Down Day this week which enabled them to experience Options Taster Sessions and also Speed Networking. We were very fortunate to welcome our visitors who shared insights and pathways into their careers during the Speed Networking Sessions. We heard inspiring talks from a Director of Marketing, Head of Engineering, Architect, Paramedic and Executive Administer of a Charity – each shared experiences and answered questions.

It was wonderful to see Year 9 engaging with the sessions and receiving such wonderful feedback from our visitors. I do encourage you to speak to your child at home and ask them to share with you what option taster sessions/networking they found interesting or anything they found insightful about the day.

This week I have been visiting Year 9 students in some of their lessons. It is always so lovely to see the students enjoying their subjects and the standard of work produced is very impressive. During technology I was able to observe some excellent culinary skills while the students were making different variations of fried rice dishes. The students proudly demonstrated their food preparation, cooking and presentation skills and it was wonderful to see their finished dishes proudly served up and ready to eat!

Top Epraise forms for Year 9 this week are:

  • 9PIR 552
  • 9PAH 423
  • 9SHU 417

Our individual Epraise leader board was topped this week by Sophie T 9SHU, Lucy L 9PIR, Bella F 9PAH. Well done to everyone and keep up the good work!

A reminder that October is International Walk to School Month, organised in the UK by walking charity Living Streets. Small actions make such a difference, so we are encouraging all pupils to accumulate lots of steps by walking to and from school throughout October.

Thank you for your support and have a lovely weekend!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

What a fantastic week we have had! Year 10 pupils have been incredibly busy and we are so proud of their achievements.

Year 10 practiced oration skills as part of a Jack Petchey Speak Out challenge workshop.

On Wednesday we had Drop Down Day with the Jack Petchey Foundation. As an English teacher myself, I was lucky enough to be part of this day with my English class. I was so impressed by their focus and willingness to put themselves out of their comfort zone. Through games and top tips they delivered a short speech to the class on a topic of their choice. There were some comical, some heartfelt and some personal stories. We have selected two students per class who will now go through to the next round where they will be delivering these speeches in a Year 9 assembly.

We then had a wonderful assembly from Ms Salsbury, who is our SENCO, all about Autism. It was both informative and thought provoking and I am aware that many members of our school community will have felt seen and heard by this. It raised awareness of how we can all better support one another.

We also had a wonderful open morning today with Year 10 parents and carers coming into Waldegrave to meet their child/ren’s tutor. We hope you found this event informative and enjoyable. We are looking forward to working with you to support our Year 10s through the next stage of their school journey.

Top Epraise by form are:

  1. 10SAN
  2. 10POR
  3. 10FCO

Top Epraise individuals are: Maisy N, Viktoriia M, Anastasiia M, Lilly C, Elizabeth N.

Congratulations to those students – you have made a fabulous start to Year 10 – keep up the brilliant work.

We have one week remaining until the half term break. Student’s uniform should remain consistent throughout the term and we ask you to support this at home by not allowing your child/ren to get false nails or hair dyed until we break for half term.

It is also important to remind all parents/carers about the importance of ensuring that any changes are then rectified ready to start back on Wednesday 5th November. Thank you so much for reinforcing this message at home.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs O Mortimer

Year 11

This week we had our drop down day which was a great success. The day included a workshop which was led by an external educational consultant, Michelle Miller, who delivered a workshop to all of our Year 11 students. There were also workshops led by subject staff in the core subjects English, Maths and Science. The aim was to exemplify one or two revision strategies using subject content that may be examined in the upcoming mock exams.

To also recognise the importance of building in time for wellbeing we also arranged workshops in Yoga and Kickboxing led by specialist providers, which students greatly enjoyed. After all the workshops had finished, the final part of the day was a big game of Bench ball involving the whole school community. It was a fantastic day and hopefully the Year 11s came away with some good revision tips to support their upcoming mocks

On Thursday we also had our Sixth Form open evening, allowing prospective students to have a look around and chat to teachers as well as students that are currently doing A levels with us at the moment. Hopefully students found this informative.

I have been getting lots of completed prefect attendance logs showing how the majority of prefects are consistently doing their duties, supporting departments and the various activities in the school. Well done!

Next week is our last week before the October half term holidays. Students are reminded of the need to continue to bring in all of their equipment to lessons, including fully charged chromebooks. There should also be no painted nails, students should save this until the holidays have officially begun.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

This week Miss Salsbury, our Director for Inclusion, has been leading assemblies on neurodiversity, speaking about Autism in girls and their experience. Autism can affect people in different ways; social communication can feel harder, sensory differences – sounds, lights, or textures might feel intense, pupils might gravitate towards routines. Importantly, people with autism have great focus, are honest, creative, and have an excellent memory.

Autistic people have strengths and differences in different areas, which can be thought of where they sit on a wheel or rainbow of symptoms. Being aware of someone’s strengths and challenges within the wheel helps us to support our autistic members of the community and also demonstrates how everyone is different. Read more about Autism in girls here.

October is also ADHD Awareness Month. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition which is thought to affect approximately 2.6 million people in the UK. It is often missed or misdiagnosed in girls, as girls are less likely to demonstrate the symptoms of hyperactivity. This means girls who have ADHD may instead present with organisational difficulties (forgetfulness, day dreaming in class or procrastination), symptoms of anxiety (excessive talking, poor self-esteem or perfectionism) or difficulty regulating their emotions. This can have an impact on their relationships at home and at school. Young Minds have more information about ADHD and mental health here and this video offers some guidance about how ADHD can affect parent-child relationships.

The sports matches of the term began with an exciting netball tournament for our mixed Year 10 and 11’s team against other Richmond Borough schools. It was hard fought with only one point between Orlean’s Park and ourselves for third place. Grey Court School came first, who we had beaten in the original round-robin event, so we are taking it as a win for Waldegrave!

To celebrate the women’s Rugby World Cup we held our own in-school rugby tournament for Year 8. Pupils split into teams representing the school’s houses and after a lot of rugby Eliot House came out as champions on the day but our player of the tournament was Sham A (8PCO) from Pankhurst House. The pupils were also lucky to meet  Harlequin’s Prop, Sheree Cooper who held a Q&A about what it is like to be a professional sports woman.

Our first football match of the season for our Year 7 team took place last Thursday and they went down a storm, with a 14-0 win! We had great debuts from players Luna B, Rhea S (who got a hat trick) and Sophia W who kept a clean sheet. Sio D from Year 8 also joined the team and played a great match. Luna was named the player’s player for the match. Well done to them all!

This performance was repeated with another win, this time against Turing House on Monday this week. It was a tight start to the game but our team created lots of chances that were well saved by their keeper. We had another debut by Hannah G and we are passing wishes for a speedy recovery to Issy S who rolled her ankle and had to come off. Well done to Ana B (12CAL) who reffed the match for us, Charlotte W (12PTA) who ran the line and Connie S (12KNO) and her ‘team’ for leading training for those not playing in the match.

Today our Year 9 netball teams competed in the plate and cup leagues with a cygnet and a swan team. They played really well demonstrating excellent resilience and team work. The players’ players were named as Eva C for the cygnets and Ava W for the swans.

We are really proud of all our players for taking part and having a go.
