Headteacher's Message

This week we received the wonderful news that six of the Waldegrave students who ran in the Kingston and Richmond Youth Council and UK Youth Parliament elections were elected. Well done! We are proud to share that following these elections Waldegrave has been awarded as ‘Most Democratic’ school in the Richmond Borough, having had over 800 of our pupils casting their votes in these elections. Well done to everyone who took part by standing as a candidate or taking part in the voting process, this is particularly important as many of our current pupils will be eligible to vote in the next general election.

We have also heard this week that a team of Year 9 pupils have been selected as finalists in ‘Innovate’ a national design competition with the Victoria & Albert Museum! The team will attend a presentation day on Thursday 25 June where they will take part in creative workshops as well as pitch their design to a panel of industry experts. We wish them luck and look forward to hearing more about how they got on.

While exams got underway this week for our Year 11 French, German and Spanish students another language could be head in our corridors on Monday, as we welcomed Year 8 pupils from choral school, Brunnsbo Musiklasser, Gothenburg, Sweden. Thank you to our chamber choir members who welcomed their Swedish peers and brought them along to their lessons in the afternoon.

Well done to Year 8 for their sensible behaviour on Tuesday when we had a team from the NHS in school administering the HPV vaccine. Their pragmatic attitude allowed the team to get on with their jobs and for lessons to resume as quickly as possible.

On Thursday Mrs Green took a small group of Year 8 pupils to the TeenTech Festival at the University of Roehampton. This event showcases the range of career opportunities across the digital, science and technology industries offering young people a glimpse at their future potential. They met with a range of companies for exciting challenges and hands-on activities.

Our Year 12 students also had a trip to UCAS Discovery Farnborough on Thursday. This event offered pupils the opportunity to meet with representatives from Universities including Bristol, Durham, Exeter, Cardiff and many more, employers and expert advisers, helping our young people to explore university applications and apprenticeships. They were able to ask about specific courses and entry requirements, meet employers offering apprenticeships and find out about earnings and qualifications they would gain and how these can lead to a chosen career. There were also careers advisers on hand as well as UCAS experts, so it was an incredibly useful day for them all.

Next week is our final teaching week for Year 11 and we look forward to celebrating our wonderful Year 11s at their final celebration assembly on Wednesday 6 May as well as at the end of year Prom on Thursday 25 June.

I hope to see many of you at tonight’s Friends of Waldegrave Quiz and Curry Night!

Have a lovely weekend!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

This week students learned about Allergy Awareness Week. It is a national campaign led by Allergy UK to raise understanding of allergies — their symptoms, risks, and how to get the right support. The theme for 2026 is “I Wish I Knew… Diagnosis Matters.” Shining a light on how getting the right diagnosis can truly be life-changing. Why does this matter? Allergies affect people of all ages. The more we understand and support each other, the safer and more inclusive our communities become.

We looked at making an allergy awareness pledge where students will learn about: common allergies, their symptoms, and what triggers them, as well as being mindful of friends and classmates, especially in shared spaces like the park or at parties. Students were encouraged to speak up if they see someone in distress or think someone needs help getting support. We will look at other Healthy schools’ items later on this term.

Here are the three students at the top of the individual epraise leaderboard:
Annabelle H (7PRE) in 1st place, Alice J (7FB0) second place with Arya Y (7EHA) & Ruzgar C (7SRI) tied in 3rd place. We now have 72 students who have achieved 100+ epraise points since starting in September. I look forward to celebrating the 200+ students in the not too distant future!

The overall tutor group leaderboard has 7PRE in first place, 7EHA in second and 7FBO in third. Keep earning those epraise points.

Well done to Divina N, 7EHA for running as a candidate in the Kingston and Richmond Youth Council and UK Youth Parliament elections. We are very proud of how many of our pupils put themselves forward and for those not successful this time there are plenty of other opportunities with the Youth Council that are open for them to pursue.

Congratulations to the team from 7FBO who were crowned the Pi champions for recalling 331 digits and to Rifat AB also from 7FBO who was the individual Pi champion recalling 154 digits – breaking last year’s record! What fantastic mathmatical achievements.

Finally congratulations to Poppy K 7PRE who got accepted into the Middlesex U12 Early Engagement Program for cricket! She will start training fairly soon and will be playing with girls from across the county, and be in with a chance of being selected for the Middlesex squad. Good luck to Poppy.

On Monday next week some year 7 students will take part in their first Rounders game of the season against Turing House. We wish them good luck.

Next week the Blackout process will be rolled out for Year 7. All communications are being sent to parents. Mr Goulborne & myself will hold an assembly on Tuesday morning to explain in more detail to students. Form tutors & key staff will be supporting the process on launch day next Wednesday.

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week we were lucky enough to be joined by members of a choral school in Gothenburg – Brunnsbo Musiklasser, who joined Waldegrave students, across different year groups, in lessons. The Swedish pupils also joined the Waldegrave Choir for a wonderful concert at St Augustine’s Church, Whitton last Saturday.

This week our first real GCSE Art and Language oral exams commenced and so the students have been extra careful and quiet moving around the school.

On Thursday a small group of Year 8 pupils attending the TeenTech Festival at the University of Roehampton. This was a great opportunity for them to meet industry experts, try their hand at experiments, handle cutting edge technology and also come up with some of their own design ideas. It was a fantastic day and I’m sure the pupils got a lot out of the event.

Our top ePraise tutor group this week is FGC. Our top individuals are Emilia B from ESU, Evelyn SB ESU and Savanna T from ESU.

Well done to Sasha C, 8PFO for running as a candidate in the Kingston and Richmond Youth Council and UK Youth Parliament elections. We are very proud of how many of our pupils put themselves forward and for those not successful this time there are plenty of other opportunities with the Youth Council that are open for them to pursue.

Next week EHO tutor group will be leading our student receptionist duty where two members of the group will work with the admin team and get messages around the school and help out with leadership tasks. The students love this role and it gives them great confidence and builds their resilience.

Have a great weekend.

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

We have had another busy week this week at Waldegrave. Students have been working hard in lessons and I have received some wonderful feedback from teachers. Mrs Ahmed was particularly impressed with her class this week who enjoyed baking some wonderful oatmeal muffins!

During form time this week Year 9 took time to learn about Stephen Lawrence, his life and legacy and reflect on what was Stephen Lawrence Day which is on April 22nd every year, on the anniversary of Stephen’s death. This years theme was “A Legacy for Change”, focusing on expanding opportunities, building a more inclusive society, and empowering young people. Stephen Lawrence Day is more than remembrance, it’s a day to celebrate progress, challenge injustice, and empower young people to imagine their futures. The day serves as a reminder of the need to continue fighting for racial equality and provides a platform for education and empowerment.

It has been great to see so many Year 9s attending after school and lunchtime clubs. It is always fantastic to see Year 9 getting involved in the wider life of the school. We encourage all of our students to try something new! These can be found on Google classrooms and on our website.

Please continue to encourage your child to attend these provisions because they are such a great opportunity to enjoy/ learn something new and meet new friends from across the school community. A reminder that Athletics Club for all years and abilities is on Mondays after school and with sports day on the horizon this is a great place to practice throwing, jumping or running events. Year 9 Rounders got off to a great start this week with numbers high. Training is on Tuesdays after school and it would be great to see some new faces – all very welcome!

Well done to Amber P, 9PAH for running as a candidate for the Kingston and Richmond Youth Council and UK Youth Parliament and her successful election. We are very proud of how many of our pupils put themselves forward and took part in the voting process. We wish Amber well in her role on the Council.

Our top three epraise forms this week are as follows – 9PIR, 9FDR and 9EDA well-done to those form classes. Topping our individual leader board this week is Caitlin R 9STR well done – keep up the great work!

A reminder about student punctuality. We do recommend that students arrive at school at 8:30 to allow 5 minutes to get to their form time. Form time starts at 8:35 and we do expect students to be punctual for that. We appreciate your support with this at home.

Thank you for your continued support – have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

It has been wonderful to see the sun finally shining, and students are taking full advantage of the improved weather by utilising our outdoor spaces for learning and during break times. It’s a bright, energetic start to this crucial term.

We are currently conducting a series of assemblies focusing on life after Year 11. These sessions aim to help students understand their options, including:
Sixth Form: A-Levels and academic paths.
Colleges: Vocational courses, BTECs, and Technical qualifications.
Apprenticeships: Earning while learning.

We encourage you to discuss these sessions at home and start thinking about which pathway suits your child’s passions and skills.

It’s a very exciting time for our Drama department! Students have been working incredibly hard in rehearsals for their upcoming performances, which take place next week. They have shown fantastic creativity and dedication.

Well done to Daisy J, 10SAN, Jiya K, 10EMU, Judith K, 10FDO and Tamira R, 10SSR for all running as candidates for the Kingston and Richmond Youth Council and UK Youth Parliament and her successful election. We are very proud of how many of our pupils put themselves forward and took part in the voting process. We wish the winners well in their new roles on the Council.

As the intensity of the term increases, it is normal for students to feel pressure. Supporting them in managing their workload now will make the transition to Year 11 much smoother.

Break it Down: Encourage your child to use “time blocking”—dividing larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps (e.g., 25–50 minutes of focused work followed by a short break).

Outdoor Study: Take advantage of the sun! Encourage reading or reviewing flashcards outside in the garden or park.

Helpful UK Resources:
GCSEPod: Encourage them to use GCSE Pod for quick, interactive revision.
BBC Bitesize: The BBC Bitesize GCSE site offers excellent, free revision resources for all subjects.
Parent Support: The Parent’s Guide to… offers practical, free tips on reducing exam stress.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Mrs O Mortimer

Year 11

This week Year 11 students had an assembly about Christina Koch. Christina Koch has made history as the first woman to travel beyond low Earth orbit and circle the Moon as part of NASA’s Artemis II mission, which launched on April 1, 2026. Christina longed to be an astronaut throughout her life and worked hard to get there, despite many obstacles

I hope that Year 11 found this to be inspiring as they plan their future careers!

This week in tutor time Year 11 students learned about Vaisakhi (or Baisakhi) which is a major Sikh festival. Celebrated around the world to commemorate the birth of Sikhism and mark the Punjabi harvest festival, Vaisakhi is celebrated annually and this year it was celebrated on Tuesday 14 April. I am sure that Year 11 students found it interesting to learn about another cultural celebration.

This week Year 11 also had their GCSE oral language exams. Despite some nerves, they all did really well and should feel very proud of themselves. I am sure that they are glad that this is now over! It is also reassuring for them to know that they have already done some of this GCSE when they walk into those exams in the summer. Well done!

Well done to Annabelle R, 11PGU for running as a candidate for the Kingston and Richmond Youth Council and UK Youth Parliament and her successful election. We are very proud of how many of our pupils put themselves forward and took part in the voting process. We wish Annabelle well in her role on the Council.

Key dates coming up:
Year 11 Dress up Day – 5th May 2026
Year 11 Final Celebration Assembly – 6th May 2026
Year 11 Prom – Thursday 25th June

Have a lovely weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

This Wednesday was Earth Day with the 2026 theme focused on climate resilience, clean air, and safe water under the banner “Our Power, Our Planet”.

Climate change and air quality issues can cause eco-anxiety, especially among young people. However, developing small sustainable habits can help young people feel empowered rather than overwhelmed. Whilst we talk about looking after our environment, it is also important to look after ourselves and each other.

Richmond Council’s Our Air Our Action group has these tips to share with students:
Movement: Spending time outside and moving our bodies can boost mood, reduce stress and support mental health. Try to travel actively to school at least once a day this month – this could be by walking, cycling, or getting off the bus or train a stop earlier.

Clean air: clean air helps us feel more alert. Try to reduce your exposure to air pollution outdoors by taking quieter routes to school, and indoors by regularly ventilating the home, particularly when cooking and cleaning. Raise awareness about air quality – working together to help improve understanding can help us to feel more in control.

Activities: doing something different can give us a sense of achievement. Indoor gardening is a gentle and mood-boosting activity and it can also help improve indoor air quality. Try growing your own herbs or houseplants!

Next week is National Gardening Week (27 April – 3 May), so this could be the perfect opportunity to test how green fingered you are.

The Year 8 Cricket Team stumped up our first sports match of the Summer Term with a tournament hosted by Teddington School this Thursday and were very lucky to have a day of play in the sunshine. The team had a lot of fun, played some excellent cricket and managed to get a place in the finals, coming second in the end. Well done to them all!

Good luck to all our team and players this term with your training and matches and most of all, remember to have fun!
