Headteacher's Message

Following International Women’s Day on Sunday, we have really enjoyed celebrating inspirational women throughout school and encouraging our own students to have confidence in their own voices.

On Tuesday, we welcomed playwright, Ava Pickett, into school to talk to students. Her work celebrates female friendship and it was fascinating to hear her talk about her award-winning play 1536 and her collaboration with Baz Luhrman on a film about Joan of Arc.

It was a privilege to support Judith and Jessica in Year 10 competing in the regional Speak Out competition. Their fantastic speeches, alongside those of their peers across Richmond, were reassurance that the future is in good hands.

We have a number of students standing in the Richmond Youth Council Elections. Please encourage your child to vote, this is a great opportunity for our students to influence decision making. The Youth Council lead a number of initiatives across Richmond and Kingston, regularly speaking to Headteachers and Councillors, to influence the decision makers who can make a difference to the young people in our community.

We have ended this week by hosting the Richmond Music Trust Choral Festival, a wonderful showcase of music from school choirs from across the borough. Seven choirs from Orleans Park, Grey Court, Christ’s School, Richmond Upon Thames School, Twickenham Academy and Turing House joined Waldegrave to perform their own pieces as well as a joint piece. It was thrilling to see and I am sure everyone left feeling uplifted ahead of their weekend.

Mobile Phone Policy

Earlier in the week I wrote to Year 7 and 8 parents regarding an important update to our mobile phone policy. We know technology can play a positive and important role in young people’s lives helping them travel independently, learn, connect, and create. However it can also bring challenges such as reduced concentration, increased social pressure, and exposure to harmful or misleading online content. As such we are taking a proactive step to address the misuse of mobile devices inside school by launching a tool to limit phone use during the school day.

We will begin the rollout of a mobile phone app, Blackout, following the Easter break. This app, specifically designed for education settings aims to support our curriculum and help educate students about the health digital habits. The rollout will start with Year 8, shortly followed by Year 7 students. In the summer term we will communicate the next steps for students in Years 9 and 10, following a review of the rollout with students in Years 7 and 8.

You can learn more about the app here. In addition, the Blackout Team is hosting a webinar on Tuesday 24 March at 5:30pm to answer questions from parents and carers. It will explain the initiative in more detail, answer any questions and provide a short demonstration of how the app works. To register your interest in attending this webinar please fill out our google form. A recording will be made available after the event for those unable to attend.

Have a great week!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

This week in tutor time Year 7 learnt about International Women’s Day, which is celebrated every year on March 8. It is a day to honor women’s achievements and raise awareness about gender equality. It highlights the social, cultural, economic, and political contributions of women around the world.

In tutor time students learned about the following women who are seen as examples to us all:
Ruth Ginsburg, a pioneering lawyer and the second ever woman on the US Supreme Court. Wangari Maathai who founded an environmental organisation which focused on conservation and women’s rights, this later allowed her to become the first African woman to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. Dolores Huerta, a civil rights activist who co-founded the United Farm Workers, where she fought for the rights of farmworkers, especially women, advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions and gender equality. Sojourner Truth was an activist for African-American civil rights and also a women’s rights activist and finally, Junko Tabei was a Japanese mountaineer and the first woman in the world to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Congratulations to the Year 7 Basketball team who won the RSSP tournament last Friday. We beat St Richard Reynold’s 18-6, Lift Richmond Park 18-8 and Grey Court 8-2 in the pool matches. We then went on to beat Orleans Park 10-0 in the semi final meaning a rematch against Lift Richmond Park in the final. This was a far tighter result but we came out on top and as champions winning 15-14. Well done to all who played and a special mention to top scorer Ava F, and coaches players of the tournament Sophia W & Tabby T.

Here are the three students at the top of the individual epraise leaderboard:
Arya Y (7EHA), Annabelle H (7PRE) & Jemima P 7SSN. Well done to Ada A, Charlotte Z & Kitty B who have all earned 100 epraise points since starting in September.

The overall tutor group leaderboard still has 7SSN in first place, 7PRE in second and 7EHA in third. Keep earning those epraise points.

Looking ahead, on Friday March 20th, students are invited to wear red on Red Nose Day, which is a non-uniform day, and to make a voluntary donation using ParentPay. I look forward to seeing lots of shades of Red. There will also be a House Competition for the Best Joke! I can’t wait to see which ones make us laugh the most!

Waldegrave is also supporting a former student by sharing her fundraiser for Beat, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity, which does vital work supporting those affected by eating disorders. If you would like to learn more or contribute, please visit the JustGiving website.

A reminder to keep working on your Easter Bonnets ahead of the Easter Bonnet Parade on the last day of term

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This term in Science Year 8 have been learning about the digestive system and enzymes in science and we have been making models of the large molecules involved in digestion. We then as a class divided up into blood vessels, enzymes and molecules working together to absorb all the molecules from the intestines into the blood. The students all had good fun acting out the process as you can see here!

This week we have launched the blackout new mobile phone initiative. Please make sure you read through all the email information we have sent you and sign up for the parent webinar on Tuesday 24 March.

A big well done to our Netball team who at the end of last week played a match against Grey Court School in which our Year 8 team did incredibly well scoring 13 goals to their 2 and on Thursday this week we had another Netball match at home against St Richard Reynolds, this time winning 20-1. Great work – keep trying your best!

Next week on Thursday is the year 8 bake off after school, representatives from each tutor group have been chosen and will spend an hour baking up their creations, to be judged by the teachers and support staff on Friday breaktime.

Lastly, this is the final call for any students wishing to take part in the Easter Bonnet parade on the last day of term.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

It has been another wonderful and busy week here at Waldegrave.

Students should all have completed their option choices. I have been really impressed by the careful thought students have put into their decisions and have really enjoyed talking through choices and hearing their aspirations.

I want to say a huge well done to our wonderful Year 9 Bakers. The Bake Off was a huge success and everyone that took part deserves to be celebrated! Matilda N, Anupriya G and Arin Y took the top spot for 9SHU with their wonderful apple pie and cinnamon cupcakes, with a very tasty apple filling. Special commendation to Eva E, Mathilda G and Lola M for bringing second place home to 9EDA with their Italian-dessert-inspired tiramisu cupcakes, each topped with a biscuit and also to Amber H, Tilda T and Ruby S in 9STR for taking the third spot with some decadent chocolate and raspberry cupcakes.

I really enjoyed all the bakes and they looked fabulous too, from the camping inspired s’mores cupcakes (9FDR), the vanilla banoffee (9EBH), mango and vanilla (9PAH) to the sweet oreo and vanilla cupcakes (9FLE). My award for best decorations though were the on trend mango and matcha cupcakes from 9PIR who perfectly swirled mango slices on top of each cake. Amazing work all!

Following International Women’s Day on Sunday 8 March we have been honoring women’s achievements during tutor time this week. IWD highlights the social, cultural, economic, and political contributions of women around the world, as such we learned about these notable women Ruth Ginsburg, Wangari Maathai, Dolores Huerta, Sojourner Truth and Junko Tabei – who have all accomplished such inspiring wonderful things.

I have been super impressed by our Year 9 students who have been doing various volunteering activities as part of their DofE qualification. This week I proudly watched a number of our young leaders assist with coaching various sporting activities across the school and also help with leading and coaching primary school children from our local community.

We have three forms leading the way for epraise this week: 9PIR are in first place with a staggering 1914 points, closely followed by 9EDA with 1449 points, 9FDR with 1429. Keep up the good work everyone!

The following students are top of the individual leaderboard for this week: Marharyta K 9PIR with 13 points, Mina R 9PIR with 10 points, and Angel H 9PIR with7 points.

Epraise are awarded both in lessons and form times for: working collaboratively, great work and homework, supporting each other, engagement in class activities, helping in the classroom, and supporting the teacher/ tutor. Keep up the great work year 9!

We want to end this term positively and so we would ask for your support in checking in with your child about how they feel this term has gone so far and if there is anything they would like to work on moving forward.

Another reminder that students have been asked to ensure that they are wearing lanyards at all times whilst on school premises. If any have been mislaid new ones can be purchased via ParentPay. Year 9 have been reminded of our uniform expectations, the full uniform policy can be found on our website.

Looking ahead, on Friday March 20, students are invited to wear red on Red Nose Day, which is a non-uniform day, and to make a voluntary donation using ParentPay.

Looking forward to another great week.

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

We took time this week to recognise and celebrate International Women’s Day. During form time, students reflected on the achievements and contributions of women around the world and discussed the importance of equality, representation and respect. These conversations encouraged students to think critically about the progress that has been made, as well as the work that still continues in many areas of society.

Congratulations to Jiya K – 10EMU, Judith K – 10FDO, Tamira R – 10SSR, Daisy J – 10SAN who are our 2026 nominees for the Youth Council. It was fantastic to see so many young people putting themselves forward or being recognised by their peers for their leadership, responsibility and commitment to representing the student voice. Taking part in the nomination process demonstrates confidence, initiative and a willingness to contribute to the wider school community, and we are incredibly proud of everyone who was involved.

Don’t forget pupils can still cast their vote in these elections until Tuesday 31 March.

As part of our Thursday form time programme this term, students are continuing to develop their media literacy skills. This is an increasingly important area for young people as they navigate online spaces and social media. Recent sessions have explored topics such as “doom scrolling” and the idea of “brain rot”, encouraging students to reflect on how constant digital consumption can affect focus, wellbeing and productivity. Students have also discussed trust in the news, considering how to identify reliable sources, recognise misinformation and engage in respectful debate when encountering different viewpoints. These sessions are designed to equip students with the critical thinking skills needed to make informed decisions about the content they consume and share.

Have a lovely weekend!

Year 11

I am sure that Year 11 are very relieved that the majority of their mocks are now finished! Teachers will soon be delivering feedback in lessons so students are encouraged to ensure that they understand how they need to improve in each of their core subjects and consider how they can apply this in the summer.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to the revision sessions that will be taking place over the Easter break. Further information will be sent home confirming bookings and with information on payments, please note late payment may lead to cancellation of the place in the class. Once the payment is received, we will provide students with a copy of their timetable and requirements for the sessions.

This week in tutor time, we celebrated International Women’s Day. Students watched a short film about Lipa, a young muslim woman who had to overcome many obstacles in order to become a semi-pro football player. Hopefully Year 11 found this to be inspirational!

The EDI committee also created a tutor time activity raising awareness about the celebration of Purim, which is a Jewish festival celebrating how Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai saved the Jewish people in Persia from an evil advisor named Haman over 2,000 years ago. This was very informative and definitely added to students understanding of other cultures and religions.

Well done to the food tech students for completing their practical exam this week. You have all worked hard and should feel very proud of yourself!

Prom tickets are now available on ParentPay. We do encourage students to attend this event as it is always loads of fun!

In the run up to Comic Relief, students have been coming up with a joke for the ‘best joke’ house competition. As part of our Comic Relief activities the winning jokes from each year group will be shown in PM reg on March 20! House Points will be awarded to winning groups!

Waldegrave is also supporting a former student by sharing her fundraiser for Beat, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity, which does vital work supporting those affected by eating disorders. If you would like to learn more or contribute, please visit the JustGiving website.

Have a lovely weekend!

Health & Wellbeing

Next week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week and the focus is on celebrating different minds.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week was founded in 2018 to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. It aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and to help the world understand, value and celebrate the talents of neurodiverse minds. The importance of harnessing the talents of neurodivergent individuals is exemplified by the words of the space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock, who said “My dyslexic thinking means I don’t just think outside the box…I think outside the planet”.

The Neurodiversity Celebration Week website includes a link to the new ‘Creative Minds Unpacked’ podcast which explores those ideas further.

Approximately 15 to 20% of the population has a neurological difference but our environment and systems are generally designed by, and for, the majority of the population. This can present challenges for neurodivergent individuals who are placed within those environments or systems that do not recognise or meet their needs. The ‘It’s so loud in here’ podcast on BBC sounds gives a valuable insight into the impact of everyday experiences, that most of us don’t notice, on the wellbeing of neurodivergent individuals. This can be particularly challenging for young people who may be undiagnosed or newly diagnosed, while also managing the intense emotions of adolescence.

If you have a neurodivergent child who is struggling with their wellbeing, you may be interested in an upcoming workshop on Suicide and Self-harm Awareness run by Mind. There is an online session on Wednesday 22nd April and an in-person workshop in Surbiton on Friday 24th April.

Yesterday our Year 9 and 10 football team played an away game against Richmond Upon Thames School. It was a loss this week but they played a great game, with player of the match chosen as Lucy G.

Our netballers were out again, this time playing St. Richard Reynolds School. The Year 7 team lost 13-1 while our Year 8s won 20-1.

Finally the Year 7 netball teams were back playing again but this time at Lady Eleanor Holles School. We had teams playing for both the Cup and the Plate and while we didn’t win these, they all had a lot of fun taking part.
