Headteacher's Message

Despite the miserable winter weather this week our Year 11s determination to work hard in preparation for the GCSEs has not been dampened. Our Design and Technology students have been working hard on textile and woodwork designs during ‘Make Days’ while Music students recorded their first exam pieces. Teachers have all commented on the creativity and talent demonstrated – well done to them all!

It has been a week for language trips in the Sixth Form with language study days for both the Year 13 German students and Year 12 Spanish Students. Year 13 went to the Goethe Institut to support their German A-Level on Wednesday. The trip gave students an insight into contemporary German culture and included a film screening of ‘Es Brennt’. On Thursday the Y12 Spanish students went to the British Film Institute where they had an introduction to the themes and style in the films of the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar. Both trips were a great success with lots of positive feedback from pupils.

We had another fantastic Working Lunch careers talk on Thursday, this time with Stephanie Rogers, Chief People Officer at Lidl who spoke about careers in retail and HR. She covered entry requirements for retail graduate schemes, starting salaries and the types of work an employee on their graduate scheme could expect to be doing in their first years. Thank you to Ms Lee Lewis for arranging this fantastic series of careers talks, which have been so popular within the school and attracted some really inspiring speakers. This month we still have talks with media and tech entrepreneur, Will Mills and Head of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC, Kalpna Patel.

Finally, a reminder that the deadline for anyone wanting to apply for a place in the Waldegrave Sixth Form is this coming Monday 19 January at 9am.

You can apply here.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

This week Year 7 were tasked with presenting their ‘Try January’ challenge ideas. During tutor time on Monday they had time to think up challenges and design the slide to present these. In Wednesday’s assembly the students presented their ‘Try January’ challenge ideas and it was lovely to see the confident way in which they did this. Well done to them all for listening so well and showing their appreciation at the end of each form group presentation. A further well done goes to Chloe & Alice 7FBO, Harper, Radika & Ellie W 7FSM, Livvy & Divina 7EHA, Malak, Eva & Emily 7EVA, Ruzgar & Samara 7SRI, Scarlett & Inaaya 7PCL, Sadie & Ivy 7PRE who each led their form’s presentation. We hope Year 7 will continue to meet these challenges throughout the year.

Here are the top three students on the individual epraise leader board:
Alice J, 7FBO – who is the first student in Year 7 to earn 100 epraise points since starting in September – brilliant effort; Arya Y, 7EHA and Annabelle H 7PRE.

Here are the top three Year 7 tutor groups this term in order are 7EVA, 7SRI and 7PCL. The overall leaderboard is very tight at the top with 7PRE in first place, 7EHA in second and 7FBO in third. Keep earning those epraise points.

Well done to the Year 7 students who took part in the U13 Richmond Schools Sports Partnership Indoor Cricket tournament on Monday. They played really well in their first cricket tournament for the school and helped the team to a 3rd place result.

On Friday the Year 7 football team took part in the RSSP 5-a-side tournament at RUT school. We look forward to sharing how they got on in next week’s issue of the bulletin.

Next week offers the opportunity to pupils looking to try something new. Two Year 11 Drama students are starting a lunchtime club on a Monday focusing on production and lighting for any students who are interested. This will be in the drama studio and is open to all year groups.

There are Dance show auditions taking place on Thursday 5 February, it would be lovely to see Year 7 pupils putting themselves forward. Good luck if you choose to audition.

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

This week we said goodbye to the ice and hello to the rain! We began the week with an assembly focused on the theme of potential. Students were guided to reflect on what inspires them and how inspiration can emerge in many forms, as well as to consider their own individual journeys — how far they have already come and the exciting possibilities that still lie ahead. We explored the importance of gratitude and recognised how the people around us can support us along the way. Students were also reminded that making mistakes and experiencing setbacks are a natural part of growth; learning how to fail, reflect, and rise again is what builds resilience and helps shape strong, confident individuals.

This week we also kicked off our friendship resilience workshop with 8FLY discussing communication and scenarios where people have misunderstood each other and it has become a problem. These will be taking place throughout the term, run by a specialist who will work with each form group.

A very well done to Annie B, Maya F, Esha K, Georgie L, Ava S and Ariana V who took on Twickenham school at Indoor Cricket this Monday. Ariana V led the team and they played valiantly but ultimately didn’t win. They now await the start of the outdoor league in the spring.

The top Epraise points winners this week are Saanay A and Sahm A in 8PCO and Sofiia B from 8EHO. No surprise then that 8PCO top the weekly ePraise point winners as well. Well done to all our students for their hard work and positive attitudes this week — keep it up.

As we look ahead to next week, we kindly remind students to arrive in the correct uniform, wearing their lanyards, and to ensure they have the appropriate books and completed homework for each lesson. Developing good organisation habits will help everyone start the week confidently and ready to learn.

Two Year 11 Drama students are starting a lunchtime club on a Monday focusing on production and lighting for any students who are interested. This will be in the drama studio and is open to all year groups.

There are Dance show auditions taking place on Thursday 5 February, it would be lovely to see Year 8 pupils putting themselves forward. Good luck if you choose to audition.

Have a good weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

We have had another busy week at Waldegrave. Students have been working hard in lessons and continuing to be proactive and it has been great to see so many Year 9s attending after school and lunchtime clubs. It is always fantastic to see Year 9 getting involved in the wider life of the school. We are encouraging all of our students to try something new this year!

Next week offers the opportunity to pupils looking to try something new. Two Year 11 Drama students are starting a lunchtime club on a Monday focusing on production and lighting for any students who are interested. This will be in the drama studio and is open to all year groups. All our extra curricular clubs can be found on Google classrooms and on our website.

This week, students attended an inspiring assembly led by our Deputy Head, Mr Goulbourne, exploring the history of female marathon running. The assembly highlighted how many women have challenged taboos and broken barriers to achieve remarkable feats throughout history, reinforcing the powerful message that nothing should stand in the way of pursuing future goals.

Our top three epraise forms this week are as follows: 9STR with 1294 points, 9FDR with 1049 points and 9SHU with 994 points. In pole position on our individual leaderboard this week is Liv H, 9LE, with 10 epraise collected this week. A huge well-done to those individuals who have achieved epraise in this term – keep up the great work!

We would love to hear about and celebrate our students’ achievements outside of school. Please be sure to let us know of anything your child has been involved with that deserves recognition by emailing the key stage three hub.

There are Dance show auditions taking place on Thursday 5 February, I hope to see Year 9 pupils putting themselves forward. Good luck if you choose to audition.

And finally a reminder to please help support the school by upholding our uniform standards. The school uniform policy can be found here. The huge majority of students are looking very smart and have all of their equipment which is wonderful to see.

Thank you for all your support and here’s to another busy week at Waldegrave!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 10

As we continue to move through this important stage of the academic year, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your continued support of our Year 10 students. This year marks a significant step as students progress further into their GCSE courses, and it has been encouraging to see the maturity and commitment many are showing.

This week Mr. Goulbourne delivered a wonderful assembly all about the Marathon and female runners through history. It was great to see students engage with this topic, and I am sure that we will have some future marathon runners in Year 10!

Our current leaderboard for Epraise is as follows: 10FCO, 10POR and 10SSR

Well done for all students who are working hard to achieve epraise. It is wonderful for you and your subject teachers to have opportunities to praise your great work and focus. Keep it up.

There are Dance show auditions taking place on Thursday 5 February, I know we have a few talented dancers in our year group, so it would be lovely to see Year 10 pupils choosing to audition.

Year 11

It has been a busy start of term for Year 11. DT students this week had their ‘Make Day’ where they had a day off timetable to make their prototypes for their technology GCSE. It was wonderful to see the students working so hard and diligently. Well done to all who took part in this.

This week Ms Lane, our Deputy Headteacher, conducted an assembly about Muhammad Ali who was an American professional boxer and activist, regarded by many as the best professional boxer of all time. Very sadly, after he had retired Muhammad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

However, he never stopped campaigning, becoming a global advocate and raising awareness and funds for research, living with the condition until his death in 2016. Hopefully Year 11 were inspired and challenged to consider what we can do in the world for the greater good, even when we are faced with difficult circumstances.

It has been great to see so many Year 11 students really focusing in their lessons and accessing the intervention classes after school. The attendance to both English and Maths intervention on Fridays and Thursdays has been brilliant. Keep it up!

Health & Wellbeing

We are now half way through January and, apparently, by February, 80% of New Year’s Resolutions will already have fallen by the wayside. It might be helpful not only to remind yourself of these numbers but to be mindful of the children and young people around you.

For young people, that pressure to keep up with others’ reports of the new revision schedule they’re nailing or the ‘work-outs’ they’ve completed can feel overwhelming. Take a moment to check in with them.

The Charlie Waller Trust have written a blog about whether New Year’s Resolutions are a help or a hindrance, and how we can reframe thinking around them – whether we are achieving what we’ve set out to do or are numbered among the 80% who haven’t managed to meet that expectation. The recommendation is for a balanced, not binary approach to working toward goals.

Taking an experimental approach and putting self-compassion at the centre of our approach to new habits seems to be helpful in taking away the fear of failure and helping us to feel encouraged rather than threatened. You can read the full blog post here.

Sports Fixtures

Friday saw the Year 9/10 basketball team win their league after playing matches against Christ’s and Grey Court. Congratulations to them for all their hard work!

Our sports clubs all resumed this week, with a tournament for our Under 13s Indoor Cricket team on Monday, who were playing at Twickenham School. The team had a lot of fun playing matches against Grey Court, Lady Eleanor Holles and Twickenham schools. They all showed great team work and came joint third.

On Wednesday the Under 16 Rugby team took part in the Richmond Schools Sport’s Partnership participation tournament for a fantastic afternoon of sport.

Today we are wishing our Year 7 football team well as they take part in a tournament at Richmond Upon Thames School this afternoon. We will let you know how they get on next week.
