Headteacher's Message

Welcome back to everyone after the Christmas break. It is a challenge for everyone to adjust after relaxing our usual habits, however I am certain a full week back has put us all back on track and for many there is comfort in school routine.

It has been great to see pupils fresh faced and enthused in their classes this week, despite less than ideal weather outside. Our Year 13 PE and Textiles students have got straight into their mock assessments and have impressed teachers with their focus and hard work.

We started the week with a lovely presentation of the Jack Petchey Awards to three deserving pupils for hard work and leadership. Annie B, Year 8 was nominated by her English Teacher, Miss Ansel who said she has “shown effort, leadership and engagement in her classes” last term, while both Robyn Z-B and Luciana B, both Year 11 were nominated by Drama Teacher, Mr Page for their dedication to Performing Arts. These pupils have run the lighting and sound, set and stage management aspects of our productions. Their effort and energy before and after school, as well as at weekends have helped ensure our theatrical productions run smoothly. They have also shown leadership by setting up a club to share their skills with other pupils and I commend them for their hard work.

Pupils in Years 10 and 11 started the term with a bang, being treated to a magical theatre experience on Wednesday. They watched the GCSE set work, ‘Wicked’ in London and learned about how a musical is put together by professionals. I am sure this trip will inspire them to ‘defy gravity’ with their results this year!

Our English Department also organised a trip to see ‘Ballet Shoes’ on Thursday for Year 9 and 10 pupils who are taking part in the National Theatre New Views playwriting programme that Miss Lynes is supporting in school. Pupils taking part in this after school programme are writing their own plays and we are very much looking forward to seeing where their imagination takes them.

If you missed our School Magazine at the end of last term please do take a look at the fantastic articles our pupils have written covering events in the Autumn Term. We have plenty more trips and activities to look forward to this term, from sports matches and theatre visits, to careers and arts excursions, all culminating in our annual ski trip, this year to Italy, at the beginning of the Easter holidays. We are looking for students to write about these activities for this term’s magazine. Pupils can let their form tutor know if they would like to volunteer.

In the spirit of New Year resolutions, please can I ask everyone travelling to and from the school, particularly at the beginning and end of the school day to strive to use sustainable transport options. Many of our pupils live close by to the school and can walk, cycle or take public transport; when there is a need to use a car please respect our neighbours and the law by parking courteously in marked parking bays and not idling your engine.

Happy New Year from all at Waldegrave!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to you all!

It has been lovely seeing Year 7 returning to school after the Christmas break, keen to get involved in school life. We have lots to look forward to with new clubs starting and we would like to remind students to look at all of the activities on offer this term on the Google classrooms and come along to a club.

We would like to remind everyone about this term’s behaviour focus; ‘being equipped and ready to learn’. We always encourage students to pack their bag the night before and speak to their tutor in the morning during tutor time if they have forgotten something of importance for the school day.

Here are the headlines from last term’s celebration assemblies, well done to all…
Top 3 Individual Epraise winners: 3rd Alice, J 7FBO; 2nd Arya, Y 7HA; 1st Brooke B, 7 EHA.
Epraise Tutor group winners: 7PRE
Attendance champions: 7FSM
Reading Challenge Winning form: 7FSM
Reading Challenge Individual winner: Emily F 7EVA

Next week we will be looking at our new challenge, ‘Try January’, and discussing what each form or individuals can do to give something new a try. We will share each other’s ideas in the Year 7 assembly on Wednesday. I am looking forward to hearing the different ideas.

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

A very warm welcome back to school to all our students and families. Despite the Arctic temperatures this week making journeys to and from school particularly hazardous, it has been wonderful to see everyone return so positively after the break. We hope you all enjoyed a restful holiday and that students have made a strong and confident start to the spring term.

This week, students attended an inspiring assembly led by our Deputy Head, Mr Goulbourne, exploring the history of female marathon running. The assembly highlighted how many women have challenged taboos and broken barriers to achieve remarkable feats throughout history, reinforcing the powerful message that nothing should stand in the way of pursuing future goals.

Our top ePraise scorers this week are in order Audrey C, EHO; Primrose M, PFO; and Sasha C PFO. The top tutor group are 8PCO. Well done everyone, keep up the good work!

Well done again to Annie B, 8SON for being presented a Jack Petchey Award. Miss Ansel spoke of her positive attitude, hard work and leadership.

Looking ahead to next week, we will be launching our Bullying and Social Media workshops for Year 8 students during PDC and form registration sessions. These workshops will be led by our school counsellor, who will work with each tutor group throughout the term to explore real-life scenarios and discuss the potential outcomes of different responses. We hope this initiative will help build understanding, resilience, and positive decision-making among our students.

All Waldegrave Sports Clubs will start next week – it would be great to see Year 8 taking part or trying something new. All clubs and extra curricular activities for the term can be found on Google classrooms and on our website.

And finally a reminder to please help support the school by upholding our uniform standards. The school uniform policy can be found here. The huge majority of students are looking very smart and have all of their equipment which is wonderful to see.

Have a great weekend.

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

It was great to see all our Year 9s back in school for a full week of lessons and working hard. I hope that everybody is refreshed after the break. Whilst on the subject of refreshing, our new focus this term is being equipped and ready to learn and I ask that parents and carers perform a stationary check as at this time of year those gleaming new pencil cases that were bulging with equipment in September are now likely to be somewhat depleted. On top of the usual pens, pencils and ruler, please ensure that your child has a purple pen (used for self-assessment of classwork) and a whiteboard pen (used for quick assessments of learning in the lesson).

During tutor time this week Year 9 have been spending time putting together a Personal Vision Board for 2026. Using a collage of images, words and symbols these boards will present their goals for the year ahead, acting as a motivational tool to help them to visualise their aspirations, whether these are for long term development, a short term project, their academic, sports, music and drama goals can all be included. This activity serves as a constant visual reminder of what they hope to achieve, keeping them focused and inspiring action.

Reflecting on the last week of last term we were able to enjoy a range of celebrations. We would like to congratulate all those students who received subject and tutor awards in the celebration assembly. Well done to 9PIR who topped the table for form ePraise totals with a fabulous 1146 points. Our top individual ePraiser is Marharyta K (9PIR), who once again has achieved the most epraise points for the term! Well done!

Well done to pupils, Rosie R and Lucy L (both 9PIR) for their volunteering with charity, Skinners’ Almshouse, last term as part of their Duke of Edinburgh challenge. The students took part in weekly visits at care home, Percy Bilton Court, and ran a festive flower arranging workshop in December. The residents have really enjoyed their visits and have been invited back to run another event for Easter.

Congratulations must go to Shrivarshini B (9EBH) who achieved a Merit in her Grade 2 Piano exam. Very well done!

A reminder to all that Waldegrave Sports Clubs will start next week – it would be great to see Year 9 being active and taking part or trying something new. All clubs and extra curricular activities for the term can be found on Google classrooms and on our website.

As the temperatures have dropped this week, please remind your children to wear warm coats to school and take extra care.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs N Lyddon

Year 10

Welcome back to all our Year 10 students and families as we begin the 2026 school year. We hope you enjoyed a relaxing and joyful Christmas holiday and were able to spend quality time with family and friends. As we start a new term and a new year, we are excited to welcome students back with renewed energy and a positive focus on learning, wellbeing and personal growth.

Our top ePraise scorers this week are in order, Lorelei W (10POR), Rosie O (10SSR) and Salawe N (10FCO). The top tutor group are 10FCO. Well done everyone, keep up the good work!

As we commence the new term, we would like to remind families of the following expectations:
School Uniform: Students are expected to attend school each day wearing the correct school uniform. Consistent uniform standards contribute to a positive school culture and a sense of belonging. This is particularly important in relation to the use of false eyelashes, incorrect jewellery and false/painted nails – please can you check in with your child/ren about this before next week begins.
Mobile Phones: In line with our school’s mobile phone protocol, mobile phones should not be seen or heard. They must be switched off and stored appropriately during the school day. This supports focused learning and positive social interactions. Please can you remind your child/ren about this expectation as we want them to focus on learning while in school.

A reminder to all that Waldegrave Sports Clubs will start next week – it would be great to see Year 10 staying active and taking part or trying something new. All clubs and extra curricular activities for the term can be found on Google classrooms and on our website.

Thank you for your continued support in reinforcing these expectations. We look forward to a successful start to 2026.

Year 11

Welcome back to all our Year 11 students and families as we begin the 2026 school year. We hope you had a joyful Christmas holiday, enjoying time relaxing with family and friends. As we start a new term and a new year, we are excited to welcome students back with renewed energy and a positive focus on learning, wellbeing and personal growth.

This week has been an exciting one for our music students who attended a Wicked workshop at Danceworks in Mayfair, followed by a trip to the musical on Wednesday. They had a fantastic day and made us all very jealous!

We also had a very interesting talk on Wednesday from parent and investment banker, Cath Rew, as part of our Working Lunch careers talk series. Cath has a science degree and discussed her route into finance and gave advice for those looking for graduate positions and internships.

Our top ePraise scorers this week are in order Summer J (11PGO), Magdalena S (11EJO) and Reem A (11PGU). The top tutor group is 11PGU. Well done everyone, this is a great start to the new term!

Well done again to Robyn Z-B (11FGR) and Luciana B (11ERU) for being presented with Jack Petchey Awards. Mr Page spoke of the hard work and leadership they have shown in their support of the Performing Arts.

Health & Wellbeing

At the start of this new term, it seems a good opportunity to remind you about the services provided by the Mental Health Support Team (MHST), who work closely with the school. The MHST is a schools-based team of psychological professionals including clinical leads, creative therapists, mental health practitioners and education wellbeing practitioners, who provide an early intervention and prevention service focusing on mild to moderate mental health difficulties such as anxiety and low mood. You can find out more about the MHST on their website or via their leaflet here.

This term, the MHST are running a number of webinars in their ‘Helping Teens with…’ series, starting next Wednesday at 6pm with a focus on digital wellbeing. Other topics covered this term are worries and anxiety (21 January); friendship issues and bullying (28 January); understanding changes in the adolescent brain (4 February); and self-esteem (11 February). All webinars are free of charge and can be booked via this link.

Sports Fixtures

The end of last term saw both our Year 8/9 and Year 10 teams named as League Winners, both after beating Christ’s school late in December. Our Year 7/8 football team have also made it to the league finals which are due to take place this term – good luck to the team!

Also at the end of last term we saw a group of sports leaders from Year 10 head to St Mary’s University to support the Borough Primary Sports Hall Athletics championships. They did a great job and we were proud of the maturity they showed.
All clubs resume training next week but our sports fixtures kick off today with a basketball match for our Year 9/10 team against Christ’s School. We’ll let you know how they get on next week.

In the meantime please take a look at the timetable of extracurricular activities available in your Google Classroom or see the list here.
