Head's Welcome

The start of term seems like a long distant memory now we have entered October. Our sports teams have been playing their first matches of the season, including our Sixth Form Netball Team who took part in the Borough tournament. They came in seventh place which means they will now be in the performance plate for this year’s fixtures. Well done to them all for taking part and on their superb teamwork!

On Friday a team of 65 student mathematicians, including Year 12, Year 13 and one Year 9 took part in the Senior Mathematics Challenge. It is a 90 minute multiple choice exam with problems set to make pupils think! Good luck to them all.

Finally a reminder that next Friday 17 October will be a late start for pupils following the Sixth Form open evening and to accommodate the Year 10 Information morning. Students will not be allowed on site until 10.10am when they can visit the canteen should they wish to purchase snacks. Registration will take place at 10.30am in their form rooms.

Have a lovely week,

Ms E Tongue

Year 12

Some of our year 12 students were involved in the Senior UK Mathematics Challenge on Thursday afternoon. This is a National maths challenge and they had to answer 25 difficult maths questions which extended their maths knowledge beyond the A level curriculum. If they are successful in this round, they will move to the next round.

Huge congratulations go to Nahla G in 12CAL whose trio won Gold in the Youth Woman’s category at the English Acrobatic Championships making them now English Champions! What a fantastic achievement!

The Year 12 parent/carer consultations will be taking place on Wednesday 22 October. You will be able to book appointments from 9am on the 17 October and the booking system will close at 1pm on the 22 October.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend!

– Ms R Pugh, Head of Year 12

Year 13

Students have continued to work hard on their UCAS application. We have now received all early entry applications, which will be processed and submitted by Wednesday 15th October in line with the predetermined deadline. The remainder of the students need to ensure they send them to us as soon as possible.

As part of the whole school’s first Drop Down Day, Year 13 students have been asked to stay at home and revise for their forthcoming mocks. The relevant arrangements have already been shared with the students, as well as their parents and carers. Finally, on Thursday, we are having our Sixth Form Open Evening for our prospective Year 12 students, their parents and carers. A large number of Year 13 students will be involved in this event and I would really like to take this opportunity to thank them all in advance for their help.

Have a lovely weekend!

– Mr C Stavrou, Head of Year 13

Health & Wellbeing

As we highlighted last week, the 10th of October is World Mental Health Day. To mark this, The Day (an online news source for young people and schools) has shared some top tips to help children to put their mental health first. The recommendations include: prioritising face to face time with people we care about; spending time outdoors and stopping doomscrolling. The article highlights that socialising with other people can release endorphins and reduce stress. It can also help with feelings of loneliness and anxiety, and even lower the risk of chronic disease.

However, research shows that socialising in person has far stronger health outcomes than socialising online. The impact of engagement with the natural world was also a key factor in supporting people’s wellbeing. Connectedness to the natural world is “vital in keeping us emotionally, psychologically and physically healthy”, according to the Mental Health Foundation. Recommendations for disengaging with doomscrolling include keeping bedrooms phone-free, opting out of notifications and focusing instead on local news. The full article with the five top  tips can be accessed here.
