Headteacher's Message

At the end of last week the government published national data about this year’s GCSE outcomes. Normally this would be a progress score, but as our Year 11 didn’t have the opportunity to sit their SATS at the end of Year 6 due to covid, they have only published attainment scores. We know we achieved another set of fantastic results this year and were delighted to not only be the best performing school in the borough but also the 10th best comprehensive school across the country. A huge congratulations to all our Year 11 students who contributed to this fantastic achievement.

Monday evening’s Live Lounge performance was a spectacular way to begin the final week of this half term. It has been wonderful to watch this event grow and see so many of our talented students have an opportunity to shine. As ever the set list covered many musical artists and genres including Vivaldi, The Cure and Gilbert & Sullivan. We even had the opportunity to hear some of the students’ own compositions. My thanks to Ms Lewis who led the event, supported by the Performing Arts team, the incredible House Band, our lighting crew and the prefects for organising another wonderful event.

We have had another busy week to complete this half term. On Wednesday evening the Sixth Form welcomed Year 12 parents for their first parent/carer consultation meetings since the start of A Level courses. It was lovely to meet so many of you.

We have also run a number of trips this week for Sixth Form, including a trip to see PUNCH at The Apollo Theatre in central London for our Year 13 Drama students, while Year 12 Media Studies pupils attended the MCM Comic Conference at ExCel London.

It has been a great start to the academic year, well done to all students in our Sixth Form. While I know many of the Year 13s will be busy studying ahead of mock exams, we wish you a restful half term so that you can come back ready for another busy six weeks until the Christmas break!

Have a lovely week,

Ms E Tongue

Year Group Messages

Year 12

Thank you to everyone who attended the parent/carer consultation meetings on Wednesday. I’m sure it was lovely to hear how well your child is doing and I hope it was useful to see how you can support your child moving forwards in their respective subjects.

Some of our Year 12 students were involved in the fantastic Music Live Lounge on Monday evening. It was so lovely to hear about our student’s talents and for them to be able to perform for their fellow peers. We hope to see more of these performances in assemblies going forward!

Mr Taylor Peace, Media Studies, meets his doppelganger

Today our Year 12 media students attended the EGX Video Game Conference at the ExCel London. They study the industry in one of their examined modules, and this is an important opportunity to see the games being designed, meet the players, talk with industry experts, and perhaps play the odd game or two. I’m sure all students found the experience extremely helpful and insightful and are now feeling more prepared for this module in their examinations.

After half term Ms Lee Lewis, English Department, has arranged a series of lunchtime talks or ‘Working Lunches’ for students to attend. On Thursday 6 November during lunchtime, Year 13 students are invited to attend a talk by Michael Howes, a diplomat in The Foreign Office. Michael has worked abroad for over 14 years, including an overseas tour in Afghanistan. He’s worked in the press office at Downing Street, as a private secretary to the Foreign Minister, responding to international crises from piracy to national security. Michael is currently focused on terrorism. This talk will be particularly relevant to all A Level Government and Politics students, as well as those who are interested in a career in government, politics and international relations.

I hope all of year 12 have a lovely half term and enjoy the well deserved rest. A reminder that students will be due back on Wednesday 5 November.

Year 13

One of the longest half-terms of the academic year has now come to an end. As always, Year 13 students worked tirelessly both in and out of lessons. Over the course of this week, there were a couple of events, which involved Year 13 students. The Music students took part in the Music Live Lounge Performances supporting our younger musicians. I’m certain that all parties including all attending parents and carers thoroughly enjoyed this event. The students were all fantastic! Moreover, yesterday, as part of the students A Level in Drama, they all went and watched a play called ‘Punch’ in the West End. Upon their return, they all said how much they loved it!

Students need to continue to work on their UCAS applications and submit them to the school as soon as possible. The sooner their applications are submitted, the sooner they will start receiving offers from their chosen Universities. On a final note, given the fact that the mock exams are due to start on Monday 10th November, students need to ensure that they are effectively prepared for them. However, they also need to ensure that they take some time to rest.

Please note – The week after half-term is a shorter one, with Year 13 students expected to be back on site on Wednesday 5 November by 8:30am.

Have a good weekend and half-term break.

Mr C Stavrou, Head of Year 13

Health & Wellbeing

Half-term is often seen as a welcome break from school routines. For many young people, it’s a chance to rest, spend time with friends and family, or enjoy hobbies. But it can also be a time when worries, stress, or low mood surface. This can be particularly true for students approaching mock exams. As parents, this is an opportunity to check in on young people’s emotional wellbeing and offer support.

Young people don’t always express how they are feeling directly. Changes in sleep or appetite, irritability, withdrawal from friends or family, difficulty concentrating, or low motivation can all be signs that a young person is struggling. Even small changes can be meaningful, and noticing patterns over time can help you recognise when additional support might be needed routines, such as regular meal and sleep times, helps young people

During half-term, there are simple ways to support young people’s mental wellbeing. Encouraging open conversation and providing a safe space to talk can make a big difference. Maintaining some routines, such as regular meal and sleep times, helps young people feel secure, while promoting opportunities for physical activity, time outdoors, and relaxation supports overall wellbeing.

Modelling self-care yourself also shows that it’s normal and healthy to take time to rest and recharge.

Sometimes, despite supportive conversations and routines, a young person may need professional help. Persistent low mood, ongoing anxiety, difficulty engaging in school or social activities, or feeling unable to cope are all signals that additional support could be beneficial. Waldegrave students can find guided self-help via Zumos and wellbeing activities or anonymous professional support via Kooth.
