Headteacher's Message

Welcome back to everyone after the Christmas break. It is a challenge for everyone to adjust after relaxing our usual habits, however I am certain a full week back has put us all back on track and for many there is comfort in school routine.

It has been great to see pupils fresh faced and enthused in their classes this week, despite less than ideal weather outside. Our Year 13 PE and Textiles students have got straight into their mock assessments and have impressed teachers with their focus and hard work.

We started the week with a lovely presentation of the Jack Petchey Awards to three deserving pupils for hard work and leadership. Annie B, Year 8 was nominated by her English Teacher, Miss Ansel who said she has “shown effort, leadership and engagement in her classes” last term, while both Robyn Z-B and Luciana B, both Year 11 were nominated by Drama Teacher, Mr Page for their dedication to Performing Arts. These pupils have run the lighting and sound, set and stage management aspects of our productions. Their effort and energy before and after school, as well as at weekends have helped ensure our theatrical productions run smoothly. They have also shown leadership by setting up a club to share their skills with other pupils and I commend them for their hard work.

Pupils in Years 10 and 11 started the term with a bang, being treated to a magical theatre experience on Wednesday. They watched the GCSE set work, ‘Wicked’ in London and learned about how a musical is put together by professionals. I am sure this trip will inspire them to ‘defy gravity’ with their results this year!

Our English Department also organised a trip to see ‘Ballet Shoes’ on Thursday for Year 9 and 10 pupils who are taking part in the National Theatre New Views playwriting programme that Miss Lynes is supporting in school. Pupils taking part in this after school programme are writing their own plays and we are very much looking forward to seeing where their imagination takes them.

If you missed our School Magazine at the end of last term please do take a look at the fantastic articles our pupils have written covering events in the Autumn Term. We have plenty more trips and activities to look forward to this term, from sports matches and theatre visits, to careers and arts excursions, all culminating in our annual ski trip, this year to Italy, at the beginning of the Easter holidays. We are looking for students to write about these activities for this term’s magazine. Pupils can let their form tutor know if they would like to volunteer.

In the spirit of New Year resolutions, please can I ask everyone travelling to and from the school, particularly at the beginning and end of the school day to strive to use sustainable transport options. Many of our pupils live close by to the school and can walk, cycle or take public transport; when there is a need to use a car please respect our neighbours and the law by parking courteously in marked parking bays and not idling your engine.

Happy New Year from all at Waldegrave!

Year Group Messages

Year 12

Welcome back to all our year 12 students. I hope you all had a lovely, restful Christmas break and have been keeping warm!

On Wednesday Mr Bannister led an assembly during their enrichment session with regards to higher education. In this session students were informed about post 18 options including the UCAS process, which begins in June. Students can start to think about courses which may interest them and whether they would like to look into a University degree, apprenticeship or go straight into work. The slides from the assembly have been posted on the Year 12 Careers and Progression classroom. If a student is not in the classroom, they can join with the code 23j77kln. Work experience opportunities and virtual events are added regularly to this classroom which will all support students when writing their personal statements.

This week has been an exciting one for our music students who attended a Wicked workshop at Danceworks in Mayfair, followed by a trip to the musical on Wednesday. They had a fantastic day and made us all very jealous!

There is much to look forward to this term and next week our Spanish students will be attending a study day at the British Film Institute while those interested in are career in HR or the retail sector can attend another exciting talk as part of the Working Lunch series, this time from Stephanie Rogers, Chief People Officer at Lidl.

Have a lovely weekend.

Ms R Pugh, Head of Year 12

Year 13

It was wonderful welcoming the Year 13 students back to school this week. I hope they, as well as their parents and carers had a lovely break. Happy New Year to you all!

It has been a busy week in the lead up to the UCAS applications deadline, with the vast majority now sent off. As a reminder, any remaining applications need to be submitted to the school no later than Sunday. The final deadline is Wednesday 14 January at 6pm. Universities are not required to consider any applications that are submitted past that set deadline.

This week the Year 13 Fashion and Textiles students took part and completed their mock exam. Their final pieces look absolutely terrific, well done to all of them!

Also, during this week, the Year 13 PE students took part in a number of NEA sessions, to help them with their coursework. A huge thanks to the PE department for organising them. Finally, on Wednesday, a large number of Year 13 students attended another ‘Waldegrave Working Lunch’, which was organised by Ms Lee-Lewis. During it, Cath Rew, who is an investment banker, but read an Earth Sciences degree from Oxford University talked to them about what careers in investment banking might look like. A huge thanks to Ms Lee-Lewis for organising such a brilliant talk.

On Wednesday, as part of the students A Level in German, Ms Knight has organised to take the students to Kings College. This event will provide insight into contemporary German culture and film through a series of talks, workshops, and a film screening.

Also on Wednesday, Ms Lee-Lewis has organised another ‘Waldegrave Working lunch’. Stephanie Rogers, who is the Chief People Officer at Lidl will speak to the students at lunchtime in the large hall. All are welcome to attend.

Finally on Wednesday next week we are holding our Year 13 Parent Consultation Meetings for parents and students to meet with teachers in order to get an update on their progress. It would be really useful if all students were in attendance to these meetings too.

Have a great weekend.

Mr C Stavrou, Head of Year 13

Health & Wellbeing

At the start of this new term, it seems a good opportunity to remind you about the services provided by the Mental Health Support Team (MHST), who work closely with the school. The MHST is a schools-based team of psychological professionals including clinical leads, creative therapists, mental health practitioners and education wellbeing practitioners, who provide an early intervention and prevention service focusing on mild to moderate mental health difficulties such as anxiety and low mood. You can find out more about the MHST on their website or via their leaflet here.

This term, the MHST are running a number of webinars in their ‘Helping Teens with…’ series, starting next Wednesday at 6pm with a focus on digital wellbeing. Other topics covered this term are worries and anxiety (21st January); friendship issues and bullying (28th January); understanding changes in the adolescent brain (4th February); and self-esteem (11th February). All webinars are free of charge and can be booked via this link.

Sports Fixtures

The end of last term saw both our Year 8/9 and Year 10 teams named as League Winners, both after beating Christ’s school late in December. Our Year 7/8 football team have also made it to the league finals which are due to take place this term – good luck to the team!

Also at the end of last term we saw a group of sports leaders from Year 10 head to St Mary’s University to support the Borough Primary Sports Hall Athletics championships. They did a great job and we were proud of the maturity they showed.
All clubs resume training next week but our sports fixtures kick off today with a basketball match for our Year 9/10 team against Christ’s School. We’ll let you know how they get on next week.

In the meantime please take a look at the timetable of extracurricular activities available in your Google Classroom or see the list here.
