Headteacher's Message

Welcome back to our second half of the Autumn Term. We have been back only 10 days and yet we have managed to squeeze in mock exams, competitions, sports matches, an Eco Conference, the Rotary Chef competition, a Careers Fair, a Mendelssohn concert and a French trip to the BFI.

Well done to all our Year 11 and 13 students who have been busy with mock exams since we came back but thankfully these are all over – I do hope they all enjoy a break this weekend, they have all certainly earned it!

At the end of last week 13 students attended an Eco Conference at Orleans Park School for schools from across the borough. It was a fantastic day with pupils making bug hotels, brainstorming sustainable community projects and listening to a talk about protecting our future from Habitats and Heritage, a local charity that acts for the natural and historic environment in south and west London.

This week Year 12 have enjoyed trips to the Sociology in Action Conference, learning about this subject as a degree option; a trip to the BFI for our French students to study and discuss French films, as well as a Music trip to watch the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sinfonia Smith Square performing Mendelssohn.

We have also had a flurry of sporting wins which we are very proud of, please scroll down to the Sports Fixtures section to read more.

There is a lot more to come this term and while it is only six weeks until Christmas Day we still have our School Production of My Fair Lady coming up in two weeks (tickets here), a Christmas Tree sale on Saturday 6 December – pre-order your real tree on ParentPay now – and the Winter Festival on 11 December which always helps everyone get into the Christmas Spirit!

On a last point, please don’t forget next Wednesday 19 November is a staff training day and so the school will be closed to all students.

Have a lovely week,

Ms E Tongue

Year Group Messages

Year 12

Welcome back to our year 12 students, we hope they all had a well deserved rest. It’s been an extremely busy new half term so far.

The U18 Boys played their first Group B league fixture against Turing House on Thursday 6 November, hosted at Waldegrave. It was a competitive and exciting match from start to finish. Read on in the Sports Fixtures section for more.

Last Friday, two of our Year 12 students attended the Eco Conference. Amelie N, who attended wrote: “I found the eco conference incredibly interesting as not only did we learn about our human impact via various different talks, we also were able to get involved in more hands-on activities, such as making bug hotels.

“We had presentations from a number of guest speakers including, Paul Jennings, CEO of charity Habitats and Heritage, as well as the GenEarth charity who spoke about ‘fast fashion’ and its impacts. Following this was a workshop where we
thought up solutions to combat fast fashion, Waldegrave pupils chose ‘reusing clothes’ and developed idea for a club that would involve us all swapping clothes.

“Finally, we had a debate surrounding what the best method for achieving biodiversity would be. The winning team sang a variation of ‘Let it Go’ about monocultures!”

Our Year 12 French students attended a BFI A-level study day on Wednesday this week. All students who attended found the day of learning about French cinema and analysing film extremely interesting. They all said what they have learned would support their studies going forward.

On Thursday our Year 12 Music students attended a Mendelssohn Concert at St John Smith’s Square performed by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sinfonia Smith Square. The students spoke eloquently with the leader of the orchestra, and were treated to an intimate performance from the third row.

Have a good weekend!

Ms R Pugh, Head of Year 12

Year 13

Year 13 students returned back to school last Wednesday following the half-term break. It was lovely to see them back on site. I am hoping they all stroke the right balance between doing some revision for their mocks and resting. This week they have all been completing their first set of mocks. Their attendance, punctuality and behaviour in this set of exams was exemplary.

The U18 Boys played their first Group B league fixture against Turing House last Thursday 6th November, hosted at Waldegrave. It was a competitive and exciting match from start to finish. See full write up in the Sports Fixture section below.

Next week, students will return to lessons. Feedback following this set of mocks will be provided in due course. Students need to ensure they continue working and submitting their UCAS applications as soon as possible. Finally, over the course of the next few weeks, early entry applicants will be invited to attend mock interviews, so they need to ensure they keep an eye on their emails, as this is how the details will be communicated to them.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mr C Stavrou, Head of Year 13

Health & Wellbeing

This week is Anti-Bullying Week and the theme this year is ‘Power for Good’; it coincides with World Kindness Day on 13th November. Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors from Year 10 have been delivering excellent assemblies on the theme this week and making the link between bullying, kindness and wellbeing explicit to their peers.

The assembly featured this short film explaining the impact of hurtful words on individuals and how to counteract the excuse that ‘it’s just banter’. The Anti-Bullying Alliance have created a parent pack to support this year’s theme, which can be accessed here and includes tips and scenarios that parents can share with their children, with different ideas for younger and older children.

Modelling self-care yourself also shows that it’s normal and healthy to take time to rest and recharge.

If your child is experiencing or has witnessed bullying (behaviour that is repeated, hurtful and intentional), please encourage them to:

  • Report the bullying to an adult in school
  • Talk to you or another family member about it
  • Walk away, rather than react in the moment
  • Communicate assertively not aggressively
  • Keep a diary of all incidents
