Our  photography curriculum covers a range of subjects including history of photography, technical skills, and artistic practice, from basic composition and camera functions to advanced digital manipulation and portfolio development. The curriculum adapts to the student’s level, beginning with learning how to use the camera,then developing more complex, concept-driven outcomes. All practical work will be underpinned with contextual research.

Technical skills:

  • Understanding camera settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
  • Mastering camera operation, including handling, focusing, and choosing an appropriate mode.
  • Learning darkroom techniques, such as developing and printing.
  • Developing digital skills, including editing and manipulation using software eg  Adobe Photoshop.
  • Studying composition, viewpoint, and the use of light.
  • Exploring different genres like portraiture, landscape, still life, and documentary.
  • Developing a personal and creative style through practice and experimentation.

Context and history:

  • Learning the history of photography and its origins.
  • Analysing the work of various historical and contemporary photographers.
  • Understanding visual culture and the broader context of photographic work.

Portfolio and professional development:

  • Building a strong portfolio of work.
  • Learning to present work in a professional manner.
  • Building a body of work for specific career paths
