Kew Inspiration for Year 10 artists

Written by Sara B, 10SHU

On Tuesday 29th September, 59 Year 10 Art students visited Kew Gardens with Mrs Jamieson for a day filled with creativity, inspiration and some unforgettable experiences! The trip gave the students an experience of how art works outside the classroom and to discover how artists can find inspiration.

The day began with an impressive collection of Henry Moore sculptures. They were able to see a number of his works in the gardens giving them the chance to see his art in person. Seeing the sculptures made them realise how important shape, form and the environment can be when making art work. They also visited the Temperate House where they saw a variety of plants that they drew in their title page.

However, one of the highlights of the trip was the Shirley Sherwood Gallery. The collection was very memorable because of the incredible detail of the artwork on display, giving many students the impression they were viewing pressed flowers and leaves, not drawings.

Overall the Kew Gardens trip gave the students a new perspective on art and where they can find inspiration. Ideas can come from other paintings and in galleries but also nature, sculpture, architecture and our surroundings are all stores of creativity. Kew Gardens was not just a school trip – it was a chance to experience art, nature and creativity all together in a new way.
