Headteacher's Message

We are now well into January and our new term, with this Monday past, named as ‘Blue Monday’, the day most resolutions have been dropped, the cheer of Christmas seems a distant memory and the gloomy weather isn’t giving us much to look forward to. However, inside school I can report plenty of positive news from sports matches to school trips to brighten up even the gloomiest skies!

Speaking of positive news, our sports teams have been busy this week with some fantastic results – scroll down to the Sports Fixtures section to read more.

On Wednesday last week the speaker for our Working Lunch careers talk was Will Mills, a media and technology entrepreneur who co-invented the technology behind the music naming app, Shazam. He also helped co-create companies that were subsequently sold to Apple and Soundcloud for over $600m. The session was incredibly popular and he told pupils about how he was able to monetise his ideas and shared insights into how to be successful in the creative industries.

Next week’s Working Lunch talk will be with Kalpna Patel Knight, Head of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC which I am sure will be another very interesting session. Thank you so much to all the speakers who have given their time to come into the school to share their knowledge and experience.

On Thursday our Sixth Formers had exciting trips to the Institut Francais for our French a-level pupils and a photography trip to the National Portrait Gallery. I am sure these interesting trips will support them with their courses over the next year.

Have a lovely week,

Ms E Tongue

Year Group Messages

Year 12

It was another busy week for our year 12 students.

On Monday 19th January we saw our Sixth Form Football team play their final B Pool fixture at home against St Richard Reynolds Catholic College. Read more about how they got on in the Sports Fixture section below.

On Wednesday lunchtime, our students were lucky to hear from Will Mills, a media tech and entertainment entrepreneur and investor. Will co-invented the tech behind the music naming app, Shazam. He also helped co-create companies that were subsequently sold to Apple and Soundcloud for over $600m. All students found the talk extremely interesting and many got ideas as to how to monetise their ideas and learn more about how to be successful in the media, tech, entertainment and creative industries.

During enrichment, all year 12 students attended a mental health talk from an external speaker. James Peterson spoke about the daily choices students can do to look after their mental health, such as exercising outside, ensuring they get enough sleep and to take “stress breaks”. He also spoke about healing choices and what students can do to deal with negative thoughts. Students found the talk extremely interesting and all came out of the talk with ideas as to how to support their mental health.

On Thursday our French students attended the Institut Francais as part of their A level studies. This study day helped KS5 French students build their cultural capital and improve their critical film analysis skills by exploring the representation of the banlieues (housing projects) in French art and cinema. Conducted in French, the study day started with a screening of Gagarine (2020), selected for the Cannes Films Festival and moved on to a workshop led by Michaël Vidon (Poet, French Teacher and Performer) for an interactive journey to “la banlieue parisienne”. Inspired by the culture of la banlieue, Michaël revealed Gagarine’s themes of community and exclusion, displacement and hope, realism and fantasy, as well as social class and inequality, and showcased the multi-faceted representations of the French working-class suburbs. It was a thought provoking day, leaving our French students plenty to talk about in their essays!

Have a lovely weekend.

Year 13

Year 13 students have continued to receive offers from their chosen universities across the UK, which is really exciting. If any of them have any questions in response to their applications, they are advised to come and see either me, Mr Bannister or contact UCAS or the Universities directly.

On Wednesday, we had another fascinating Waldegrave Working Lunch careers talk organised by Ms Lee-Lewis. It was given by Will Mills who is a media tech and entertainment entrepreneur and investor. Will co-invented the tech behind the music naming app, Shazam. He also helped co-create companies that were subsequently sold to Apple and Soundcloud for over $600m. It was such a brilliant talk and very well attended by our students.

Yesterday, as part of the Year 13 students’ A Level studies in French, they all attended an event that was organised by the Institut Français in London.

We are now looking forward to next Friday’s talk with Kalpna Patel Knight, who is the Head of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC. More details will be shared with the students on the relevant google classroom. The venue will be the Main Hall.

Have a good weekend.

Mr C Stavrou, Head of Year 13

Sports Fixtures

Last Friday our fantastic Year 7 footballers took part in a five-a-side Borough Tournament at Richmond Upon Thames School where they were named champions! A great result and well deserved for the great team work on display.

Our Sixth Form footballers were also out on Monday playing their final B Pool fixture at home against St Richard Reynolds Catholic College (SRRCC). Our team took an early lead through a goal from Omer O, 12ESA), but SRRCC equalised just before half-time.

Despite muddy and challenging playing conditions, the team moved the ball well with short, sensible passing and forced errors through high-intensity pressing when out of possession. At the 40-minute mark, two substitutions were made, and super-sub Noah R, 12PTA, made an immediate impact, scoring our second goal of the match.

Sam K, 13SDO then produced a fantastic penalty save to preserve our lead. Unfortunately, SRRCC later found an equaliser with an excellent long-range strike into the top right-hand corner, bringing the game to a 2–2 draw.

With all pool games now completed, we finished second in the table, beating SRRCC on goal difference. We now await confirmation of our next-round fixture, which will begin in Spring Term 2.

This week saw plenty of action for the basketball teams too. On Monday our Year 7 team’s first league game played against Twickenham School at home, with a 42-2 win. The player’s players of the match were Ava F, 7FSM, and Isabel M, 7SRI. Wednesday saw the joint Year 7/8 basketball team take part in a Borough Richmond Schools Sports Partnership tournament, this time on home courts. They played five games, winning all five and scoring 58 points in total (while conceding only 10!).

Well done to all our players this week and to everyone in training, we have seen some fantastic team work and determination this week. Keep it up!
