Headteacher's Message

We are now well into January and our new term, with this Monday past, named as ‘Blue Monday’, the day most resolutions have been dropped, the cheer of Christmas seems a distant memory and the gloomy weather isn’t giving us much to look forward to. However, inside school I can report plenty of positive news from sports matches to school trips to brighten up even the gloomiest skies!

Speaking of positive news, our sports teams have been busy this week with some fantastic results – scroll down to the Sports Fixtures section to read more.

On Wednesday our Year 11 GCSE Music students continued to show their passion and talents while recording their ensemble pieces for their exams and we also welcomed another fantastic Working Lunch speaker to school. This week the speaker giving a careers talk was Will Mills, a media and technology entrepreneur who co-invented the technology behind the music naming app, Shazam. He also helped co-create companies that were subsequently sold to Apple and Soundcloud for over $600m. The session was incredibly popular and he told pupils about how he was able to monetise his ideas and shared insights into how to be successful in the creative industries.

Next week’s Working Lunch talk will be with Kalpna Patel Knight, Head of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC which I am sure will be another very interesting session. Thank you so much to all the speakers who have given their time to come into the school to share their knowledge and experience.

On Thursday our Sixth Formers had exciting trips to the Institut Francais for our French a-level pupils and a photography trip to the National Portrait Gallery. I am sure these interesting trips will support them with their courses over the next year.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend!

Year Group Messages

Year 7

This week Year 7 had the opportunity to try out some new clubs. On Monday at lunchtime two of our Year 11 students started a ‘Lighting club’ for all students who are interested in stage production and what goes on behind the scenes. There is no need to have any experience and all age groups are welcome. Then on Friday lunchtime the Ukelele club held its first session for Year 7 to learn to play and meet new people. I hope plenty of Year 7s will give them a try next week if they didn’t go along this week.

Year 7 continue to take part in a weekly quiz which is hotly contested amongst the tutor groups! 7FBO top the leaderboard with 7EVA hot on their heels. Here is one of the questions for you to try and answer…Scientists have revealed a detailed map showing what lies beneath Antarctica’s ice. What surprising fact about Antarctica does this help to explain? (Answer next week!)

I am delighted to announce that the Year 7 Football team are the Richmond Schools Sports Partnership 5-a-side champions after winning all of their pool games last Friday and then going on to beat Grey Court in the final. Well done to all.

The Basketball team won their first league game with an impressive score of 42-2 points. What was even more impressive was the manner in which they performed and took the win, choosing 2 player players for the opposition. Our well deserved winners were Ava F and Isabel M. We look forward to more successes in our next matches.

Finally on Wednesday the Year 7&8 Basketball tournament took place at Waldegrave. Ava F and Mary V played in this event from Year 7 and I’m delighted to say we won. Well done to all who played.

Check out our socials and the Sports Fixtures section below for more pictures of the winning teams.

Have a great week!

Mrs Bashford-Hynes, Head of Year 7

Year 8

I want to say a huge well done to Year 8. I have had some wonderful feedback this week from staff and subject teachers regarding their work ethic and positive attitudes from the year group. In form time this week Year 8 have been talking about smoking and vaping, with a focus on how these are advertised to appeal to young people.

This week in Assembly we welcomed a guest speaker from Richmond Council to continue a series of assemblies on air pollution and global warming. They also hosted a workshop on how we can each make small changes which make big differences – as a part of Our Air, Our Action – Richmond Council’s environmental project. Pupils agreed that how they travel was very important and so we are asking all pupils, teachers and staff to try and switch one journey a week to a sustainable travel journey such as cycling, walking.

This week our Year 7/8 basketball team played in a tournament and were named as winners! Our Year 8 team also received their medals for winning the basketball league. Well done to them for their great team work.

Well done to all of our students who have achieved epraise points and to those forms who are leading the way. A reminder that points can be used to ‘purchase’ items from the epraise rewards shop – so keep collecting!

Our top three epraise forms this week are as follows – 8POC with 1905 points, 8FLY with 1801 points, 8PFO with 1504 points – keep up the great work! Lily K 8PCO is leading the way on the individual points with 10 points earned this week. Well done to all of our students who are demonstrating the enjoy, achieve and empower aspects of school life.

A reminder about student punctuality. We do recommend that students arrive at school at 8:30 to allow 5 minutes to get to their form time. Form time starts at 8:35 with students are expected to be punctual for that. We appreciate your support with this at home.

Don’t forget there are Dance show auditions taking place on Thursday 5 February, it would be lovely to see Year 8 pupils putting themselves forward. Good luck if you choose to audition.

We are all looking forward to the upcoming trip to the Rose Theatre to see The Boy at the Back of the Class on 9 February. You can read more about this play here.

Have a good weekend!

Ms M Rook, Head of Year 8

Year 9

I want to say a huge well done to Year 9. I have had some wonderful feedback this week from staff and subject teachers regarding the wonderful work ethic and positive attitudes from the year group. In form time this week Year 9 have been working on developing resilience and learning vital skills to manage emotions, cope with challenges and develop a positive mindset. The focus this week was managing money and understanding limitations of a budget.

This week in Year 9 we welcomed a guest speaker who came in to talk about the effects of air pollution and global warming and also hosted a workshop on how we can make small changes which make big differences – as a part of Our Air, Our Action – Richmond Council’s environmental project. Pupils agreed that how they travel was very important and so we are asking all pupils, teachers and staff to try and switch one journey a week to a sustainable travel journey such as cycling, walking.

Well done to all of our students who have achieved epraise points and to those forms who are leading the way. A reminder that points can be used to ‘purchase’ items from the epraise rewards shop – so keep collecting!

Year 10

We have had another fabulous and very busy week at school. Year 10 have been looking at Media Literacy Skills in Thursday’s form times which I know has given them lots of food for thought. On Fridays we are giving the platform to our Student Leadership Teams and moving forward once a half term they will be in charge of creating and delivering content relating to their role. These are the Form Captain, Sports Captain and Eco Rep. I know from speaking to their tutors that these are well prepared and wonderfully delivered so well done to all participants.

Another great week for Epraise. The top from each form group are:
10EMU: Karlotte C
10EMU: Lilly C
10FCO: Anastasiia M
10FDO Izzy L-W
10POR: Viktoria M
10PWA: Elizabeth N
10SAN: Anna M
10SSR: Amaya S

It is so wonderful to see each student being praised for their work both in and out of the classroom. Keep it up 🙂

There are Dance show auditions taking place on Thursday 5 February, I know we have a few talented dancers in our year group, so it would be lovely to see Year 10 pupils choosing to audition.

Looking further ahead- can I please remind you about Work Experience placements. The deadline for students finding their own placement is February 13th (just before half term). Mrs Croucher is overseeing this and students can speak to her if they are having any issues. If you need some support with this then please contact Mrs Croucher via the KS4@ email address.

Thank you for all your support and here’s to another busy week at Waldegrave!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 11

It has been fantastic to see so many students attending the after school intervention sessions this week, showing their commitment to do well in the upcoming mocks

Math’s intervention is continuing to run after school on a Thursday and English on a Friday. However, please note that if your child has received an invitation to additional ‘booster’ sessions for English that they do not need to attend the Friday after school English session as well.

This week in form time students have been organizing the yearbook which students will receive as a memory of their time at Waldegrave. This week students had to decide on a quote to put any their photo. Hopefully students were able to think of some creative ideas.

Well done to our Year 11 prefects for attending to their duties so diligently and consistently. We have been getting a lot of positive feedback. Keep up the good work!

Our Year 11 Book Club has just finished reading their play, ‘The Crucible’ and will be moving on to a new play next week – 1536 by Ava Pickett. For those interested in joining, Ms Nowicki runs this club on Thursday lunchtimes weekly and it is open for all Year 11 pupils.

This week students have been receiving their ‘statements of entry’ in form time for the upcoming GCSEs in the summer. If there are any mistakes on this then students should take this to the KS4 Hub to be sorted.

Have a lovely weekend!

Sports Fixtures

Last Friday our fantastic Year 7 footballers took part in a five-a-side Borough Tournament at Richmond Upon Thames School where they were named champions! A great result and well deserved for the great team work on display.

Our Sixth Form footballers were also out on Monday playing their final B Pool fixture at home against St Richard Reynolds Catholic College (SRRCC). Our team took an early lead through a goal from Omer O, 12ESA), but SRRCC equalised just before half-time.

Despite muddy and challenging playing conditions, the team moved the ball well with short, sensible passing and forced errors through high-intensity pressing when out of possession. At the 40-minute mark, two substitutions were made, and super-sub Noah R, 12PTA, made an immediate impact, scoring our second goal of the match.

Sam K, 13SDO then produced a fantastic penalty save to preserve our lead. Unfortunately, SRRCC later found an equaliser with an excellent long-range strike into the top right-hand corner, bringing the game to a 2–2 draw.

With all pool games now completed, we finished second in the table, beating SRRCC on goal difference. We now await confirmation of our next-round fixture, which will begin in Spring Term 2.

This week saw plenty of action for the basketball teams too. On Monday our Year 7 team’s first league game played against Twickenham School at home, with a 42-2 win. The player’s players of the match were Ava F, 7FSM, and Isabel M, 7SRI. Wednesday saw the joint Year 7/8 basketball team take part in a Borough Richmond Schools Sports Partnership tournament, this time on home courts. They played five games, winning all five and scoring 58 points in total (while conceding only 10!).

Well done to all our players this week and to everyone in training, we have seen some fantastic team work and determination this week. Keep it up!
