About Us

Our school has been at the heart of the Twickenham community since 1980.

We were formed through the merger of two historic girls’ schools, Twickenham Girls’ School and Kneller Girls’ School, and our name honours Lady Frances Waldegrave, a notable local resident. Our site has a long educational legacy, as it was originally home to Twickenham Girls’ School.

Waldegrave School’s history stretches back more than a century. Twickenham Girls’ School first opened in 1909 as Twickenham County School for Girls, later becoming a grammar school before transitioning to a comprehensive in 1973. Kneller Girls’ School opened in 1936, initially sharing a site with Kneller Boys’ School, which later moved and became Twickenham Academy. In 1980, the two schools united to become Waldegrave School, with Ruth Kirkley—headteacher of Twickenham Girls’ School—leading us as our first headteacher.

We are proud of our strong academic reputation that has been built over the years and of how our community has always been at the heart of what we do. In 2010, we celebrated our 30th anniversary with a special event that welcomed multiple generations of our students, some generations within the same family.

Today, we continue to be proud to be recognised nationally for our success, including consistently being ranked as one of the country’s best comprehensive schools by The Sunday Times and our most recent ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgement.
