Ways into Teaching

Schools Direct

Waldegrave Training Alliance (WTA) offers a School Direct teacher training programme, working in partnership with experienced training providers and local universities. This school-based route into teaching allows trainees to gain hands-on experience from day one, learning alongside skilled practitioners in a supportive and high-performing environment. Trainees benefit from a blend of practical classroom training and academic study, leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We are committed to developing the next generation of teachers and provide high-quality mentoring, regular feedback, and opportunities to become a valued part of our school community throughout the training year.

PGCE

In addition to the Waldegrave Training Alliance (WTA), Waldegrave partners with a number of universities including Roehampton, St Mary’s and UCL Institute of Education to support students completing their PGCE. This ensures that teachers training with us at Waldegrave have an opportunity to establish networks with other new entrants to the profession. A number of staff working at Waldegrave started as trainees here, as a result all are committed to supporting the next generation of teachers.

Early Careers Teacher

We are proud to offer a comprehensive and supportive programme for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) as they begin their teaching journey. We provide a structured two-year induction in line with the Early Career Framework, led by experienced mentors who offer regular guidance, coaching and feedback. ECTs benefit from a reduced timetable, tailored professional development sessions, and opportunities to observe best practice across the school. Our strong culture of collaboration ensures that new teachers feel supported, valued and fully integrated into the school community from day one.

We work with the Wandle Teaching Hub to support ECTs through their training. ECTs work in partnership with other local schools to complete their professional training and share best practice,  This enables you to keep up to date with the latest pedagogical research.

Why Work at Waldegrave

Commitment to CPD

There is a strong commitment to training and professional development.  We use Bluesky, a centralised system for staff members to track and manage their CPD activities, access resources, and engage in self-reflection and evaluation. We also engage several on-line training providers to easily supplement learning in a flexible way as well as partnering with several local universities.  Working with other leading schools, you will get the opportunity to meet, collaborate and share best practice.  We have supported non-teaching roles complete apprenticeships as well as other professional courses.

Career Progression

We support career progression, enouraging whole school responsibility, offering short term honorariums and TLRs for key strategic projects, and supporting training including NPQML and NPQSL.  WE have a strong track record of our teaching assistants moving on to become qualified teachers; many undertaking their training at Waldegrave.  Support staff are also supported to project internally whether that be moving to a new role within the school or taking on leadership responsibilities and line managing a team.  We have also supported staff through apprenticeships, achieving this degree equivalent qualification and consequent career progression.

Supportive Environment

We pride ourselves on fostering a supportive and collaborative working environment where every staff member feels valued.  New employees receive tailored induction and ongoing mentorship to help them thrive in their roles.  We prioritise staff wellbeing through open communication, teamwork and access to regular professional development.  We take workload into account with every decision and plan our working calendar carefully to avoid conflicting pressures as much as possible.  As well as your line manager, each department has a member of the senior leadership team allocated. You can raise queries or questions directly with them and you will be assured that your team will be represented in senior planning meetings.

Flexible Working

We offer a range of flexible working options to help staff maintain a healthy work-life balance, including part time roles, job shares and term only contracts.  For certain roles, we can offer some working from home and some flexibility around working hours.  Our school is committed to supporting personal and family commitments through adaptable scheduling where possible.  By promoting flexibility, we aim to create a more inclusive and supporting workplace for everyone.

Pension Benefits

Waldegrave offers access to generous pension schemes; the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for teachers and the Local Government Pension Scheme for support staff.  These provide long-term financial security with employer contributions and benefits designed to support your future.

We are close to major roads/motorways including the M25, M3, M4, M40 and A3 and are convenient for Heathrow, Gatwick and other London airport hubs.
